No verified individual record for the “largest guinea pig ever” is established in the sources reviewed. The confusion comes from three different facts: Guinness World Records calls the capybara the largest rodent; the greater guinea pig (Cavia magna) is a separate species described as the largest in a limited species comparison; and veterinary references publish normal domestic-pet weight ranges. None of those facts identifies one record-breaking guinea pig.
Is there a verified largest guinea pig ever?
At present, the most accurate answer is that a recognized authority has not documented a verified individual “largest guinea pig ever” record in the material available for this topic. That is a narrower statement than saying no unusually large guinea pig has ever existed. It means the sources reviewed do not provide a named animal, an authenticated measurement, a date, and a record category that can be checked as an official maximum.

The wording matters because “largest” can describe several different things:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Largest rodent: a formal category in which Guinness World Records identifies the capybara.
- Largest species in a comparison: a biological description, such as Animal Diversity Web’s account of Cavia magna.
- Heaviest domestic pet: an individual animal’s body mass, which would need a documented weighing protocol and verification to become a record.
- Longest animal: a measurement of body length rather than mass, and not interchangeable with a weight record.
A species range or a typical pet weight can show what size is plausible. It cannot, by itself, prove that the heaviest animal in that range was the biggest guinea pig ever recorded.

Why the largest-rodent record is a capybara, not a guinea pig
Guinness World Records lists the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) under its “Largest rodent” record. The page gives a head-and-body length of 1–1.3 metres and a typical mass of 50–60 kilograms. It also mentions an exceptional captive female weighing 113 kilograms. Those figures belong to capybaras, not to guinea pigs.
A capybara and a guinea pig are both rodents, but they are not the same animal or the same species. Sharing the order Rodentia does not make every rodent a guinea pig. The capybara’s record is therefore useful as a correction to the phrase “largest rodent,” not as an answer to the question about the largest guinea pig.
The scale difference also explains why a search result can be misleading. A capybara may weigh tens of kilograms, while domestic guinea-pig weights are generally reported in grams. Comparing those numbers as if they were entries in one record category mixes a formal rodent record with pet-care reference data.

“Greater guinea pig” is the common name of Cavia magna, a distinct wild species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes Cavia magna under that common name. The name can sound like a claim about one unusually large pet, but it is a taxonomic label for an entire species.

Animal Diversity Web’s species account, published in 2023, reports an adult mass range of 500–1,500 grams for Cavia magna, with an average of about 750 grams. In the same account, it describes the greater guinea pig as the largest of the three species being compared: the greater guinea pig, Brazilian guinea pig, and Santa Catarina guinea pig.
That wording has two important limits. First, 500–1,500 grams is a population-level adult range, not a certified maximum for an individual world record. Second, “largest of the three” refers to the comparison in that account; it does not establish that Cavia magna is the largest guinea-pig individual ever measured, nor does it create a Guinness size title.
How big was the biggest guinea pig?
No verified answer in kilograms or grams can be given for a single record-holding guinea pig. The best-supported figures are benchmarks that help explain the terminology, not a record table.
| Subject | Measurement reported | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Cavia magna (greater guinea pig) | 500–1,500 g adult mass; approximately 750 g average | Animal Diversity Web’s species-level range and average, published 2023; not an individual record |
| Adult domestic male guinea pig | 900–1,200 g | UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine care-reference range; not a maximum |
| Adult domestic female guinea pig | 750–900 g | UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine care-reference range; not a maximum |
| Capybara | 50–60 kg typical mass; 1–1.3 m head-and-body length | Guinness World Records’ largest-rodent category; a different species and record |
| Exceptional captive female capybara | 113 kg | Example mentioned on the Guinness largest-rodent page; not a guinea-pig measurement |
The table shows why a statement such as “the biggest guinea pig weighed 1,500 grams” would be too strong. The 1,500-gram figure is the upper end of a reported adult range for a species. It is not tied to a named individual, a record application, or a verification process. Similarly, the UC Davis figures describe adult domestic animals by sex and are intended as veterinary reference ranges.

Domestic guinea-pig size in everyday care
For a pet owner, the useful question is usually not “Is my guinea pig a world record?” but “Is its weight appropriate and stable for this individual?” UC Davis lists adult domestic males at 900–1,200 grams and adult females at 750–900 grams. Those ranges are guides, not pass–fail limits. A guinea pig’s age, sex, body frame, reproductive status, and body condition affect how a number should be interpreted.
Weight is most informative as a trend. To create a practical record at home:
- Use a digital scale that reads in grams and place it on a level, stable surface.
- Weigh the guinea pig in a secure container or bowl that has been tared to zero, so the container is not counted.
- Measure under similar conditions each time, record the date and weight, and avoid comparing a fasting or freshly fed measurement with an otherwise different routine.
- Look for a sustained change rather than treating one reading as a record. A sudden gain or loss deserves veterinary advice, especially if appetite, droppings, movement, or breathing also changes.
This approach can tell you whether your pet is following its own pattern. It cannot convert a household measurement into an official world record, because no recognized individual-size category and verification record is established here.

Biologists and veterinarians use measurements for different purposes. A species account summarizes variation across animals and populations. A veterinary guide gives practical expectations for healthy care. A record organization needs a defined category and evidence for one specific animal.

To call an animal the largest guinea pig ever, a credible record would need to resolve at least these questions:
- Is “largest” based on mass, body length, or another measurement?
- Is the animal a domestic guinea pig or a wild Cavia species?
- What was the animal’s age and sex at measurement?
- Who measured it, with what calibrated equipment, and on what date?
- Can the identity and measurement be independently verified?
The sources reviewed do not supply that complete record for a guinea-pig individual. They do supply species descriptions and normal domestic ranges, which are valuable context but answer a different question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare guinea-pig size without mixing categories
Use the measurement and population level stated by the source. The following framework prevents the most common errors:
Recommended Free Tools
| If you are asking… | Use… | Do not substitute… |
|---|---|---|
| Which animal is the largest rodent? | The Guinness capybara record | A domestic guinea-pig weight range |
| Which guinea-pig species is larger in a biological comparison? | The species account’s stated comparison, including Cavia magna | A claim about one record-breaking pet |
| What weight is typical for an adult pet? | The UC Davis male and female reference ranges | The upper end of a wild-species range |
| How big was the biggest individual ever? | A named, verified individual record | An average, range, or uncited anecdote |
Mass and length should also be kept separate. A longer animal is not automatically heavier, and a heavier animal may have a different body shape. Unless a source reports both measurements for the same individual under the same conditions, do not infer one from the other.

Is a capybara a guinea pig?
No. A capybara is a separate rodent species, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. A guinea pig belongs to the genus Cavia; the greater guinea pig is Cavia magna. Their shared membership in the rodent order explains why both appear in discussions of rodent size, but it does not make them interchangeable.
The answer is especially important when quoting the 50–60-kilogram typical capybara mass or the 113-kilogram exceptional captive female. Reusing either number as a guinea-pig statistic would be a taxonomic error. If a headline says “largest guinea pig” but the supporting figure is in the capybara record, the headline and evidence are describing different animals.
What the Snowball record actually proves
Guinness World Records’ guinea-pig page located for this subject concerns longevity, not size. It names Snowball as the longest-lived caged guinea pig and records an age of 14 years and 10.5 months at death on 14 February 1979.
Snowball’s age cannot be used as evidence that the animal was unusually large. Lifespan and body mass are separate record categories, with different measurements and documentation. Mentioning the longevity entry is helpful only to prevent it being mistaken for a size record.
The clearest conclusion for readers
If “largest guinea pig ever” means a single, officially verified individual, the sources reviewed do not establish one. If it means the largest species in the specific comparison reported by Animal Diversity Web, the answer is the greater guinea pig, Cavia magna, with an adult mass range of 500–1,500 grams and an average around 750 grams in that account. If it means the largest rodent overall, Guinness identifies the capybara, with typical mass of 50–60 kilograms and head-and-body length of 1–1.3 metres.
Those are three accurate answers to three different questions. Keeping the record category, species, measurement, and evidence level attached to every number is the only reliable way to discuss how big the biggest guinea pig really was.
