Largest Hawk in the World: Ferruginous Hawk or Upland Buzzard?

The Ferruginous Hawk is the best-supported answer to the largest-hawk question, but the Upland Buzzard may be larger worldwide. Compare measurements, identification clues, taxonomy and the evidence limits behind the ranking.

The Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) is the best-supported answer, with an important qualification. It is the largest Buteo hawk in North America. A 2021 assessment by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) says that only the Upland Buzzard (Buteo hemilasius) may be larger worldwide. Because there is no standardized, method-matched table comparing every hawk species, “largest hawk in the world” is not an uncontested ranking.

The answer also depends on what “largest” means: body mass, total length or wingspan. Those measurements do not always identify the same winner. A harpy eagle does not answer a hawk-specific question; it is an eagle, while the Ferruginous Hawk is a member of the genus Buteo.

The short answer: Ferruginous Hawk, with a global caveat

The Ferruginous Hawk is North America’s largest species of Buteo. Its species name, regalis, means regal, an apt description for a broad-winged raptor that can reach about 60 centimetres in length, span roughly 150 centimetres and weigh around 1.5 kilograms according to the 2021 COSEWIC assessment.

That report carefully limits the worldwide claim: only the Upland Buzzard may be larger. “May” matters. The available sources do not provide a single, standardized global survey using the same measuring methods, seasons, age classes and sex breakdown for every hawk. The Ferruginous Hawk is therefore the strongest practical answer, not a proven universal champion under every measurement.

Why the name is usually the right answer

Among North American hawks in the genus Buteo, the Ferruginous Hawk is clearly identified as the largest. It combines substantial mass with a long wingspan and a robust body, rather than excelling on only one dimension. Its size is especially apparent beside the smaller hawks commonly seen over fields and roads.

Why “world’s largest” needs care

Global comparisons become difficult because “hawk” is an everyday label rather than one perfectly consistent worldwide taxonomic group. Species called hawks occupy several genera, and published measurements may describe different populations or use different methods. A ranking based on maximum recorded length, average adult mass or typical wingspan could produce different results.

What does “largest hawk” actually measure?

Three measurements are useful when comparing raptors. Treating one as the only definition can make a confident-sounding answer misleading.

Body mass

Mass is often the clearest indicator of bulk. It is affected by sex, age, season, food availability and the individual bird’s condition. Female Ferruginous Hawks are about 50 percent heavier than males in the 2021 Canadian assessment, so a female and a male of the same species can look substantially different in weight.

Total length

Length is measured from the bill to the tail and includes structures that do not add much body bulk. A long-tailed bird can be longer than a heavier, shorter-tailed bird. Length ranges also widen when measurements from different populations and sexes are combined.

Wingspan

Wingspan indicates the distance between the tips of fully extended wings. It is useful for understanding soaring ability and visual scale, but a large span alone does not settle which hawk is largest overall. Wing shape, feather wear and the measuring position can all affect the reported figure.

The fairest interpretation

For this species, the most defensible wording is: the Ferruginous Hawk is the largest North American Buteo, and one of the strongest candidates for the world’s largest hawk; the Upland Buzzard may exceed it globally. That wording keeps the geographic and taxonomic boundaries attached to the claim.

Ferruginous Hawk size figures from major references

The following figures should not be blended into one artificial “average.” They come from separate references and represent different reporting approaches.

Reference Length Wingspan Mass How to read it
COSEWIC / Environment and Climate Change Canada, 2021 About 60 cm About 150 cm About 1.5 kg Approximate figures used in the assessment that calls it North America’s largest Buteo and says the Upland Buzzard may be larger globally.
Environment and Climate Change Canada status-report chapter, 2018 56–69 cm Not stated 977–2,074 g A separate range showing variation among individuals; it is not a standardized worldwide ranking.
Audubon field-guide entry 56–74 cm 1.4–1.5 m 1.3–2.2 kg Independent guide values. The range should be kept distinct from the COSEWIC approximations.

The spread between these figures is not evidence that one source is wrong. It reflects ordinary biological variation and differences in sampling and presentation. The 2018 Canadian range includes both small and large individuals, while the 2021 assessment gives convenient approximate values. Audubon’s guide supplies another reference range. None of these sources establishes a directly comparable, method-controlled contest between every hawk species on Earth.

How to identify a Ferruginous Hawk in the field

Size is useful, but field marks are more reliable than trying to judge a bird’s weight from a distance. The species occurs in western prairies, deserts and other open country, where its pale plumage and broad wings can be conspicuous.

Start with shape and flight

  1. Check the silhouette. Look for a large, broad-winged hawk with a robust body and a notably large head.
  2. Watch the soaring posture. Ferruginous Hawks often hold their long wings in a shallow V while gliding and circling over open ground.
  3. Assess the wing base. The wing is broad at its base and tapers toward the tip. This structure helps separate it from a similarly pale Red-tailed Hawk.
  4. Use the habitat as supporting evidence. Western grasslands, deserts, prairies and other expansive treeless areas fit the species better than dense woodland.

Recognize the pale morph

The common pale morph has white underparts and a mostly white tail, contrasted with rusty-orange shoulders and back. The bird’s head is often described as gray, and the rusty coloration can extend down the legs. In good light, the combination of gleaming white below and rich ferruginous (rust-colored) upper parts is distinctive.

Do not overlook the dark morph

Dark-morph Ferruginous Hawks are reddish-chocolate overall and can look very different from the pale birds shown in many field guides. Plumage color alone is therefore not enough. Shape, the shallow-V soaring posture, the broad-based tapered wing and the open-country setting remain important.

Remember the sex difference

Females are larger, about 50 percent heavier and approximately 5–15 percent greater in other measurements according to the 2021 assessment. A large female can appear dramatically bigger than a nearby male without representing a different species.

Where the Ferruginous Hawk lives and what it eats

Cornell describes the species as a bird of western prairies, deserts and open country. Such landscapes provide the visibility and soaring space expected of a large buteo. The hawk may wait near prairie-dog or ground-squirrel burrows before making a pursuit, using elevated observation points or patient flight to locate prey.

Small mammals make up most of its diet. That feeding strategy helps explain the bird’s powerful build, broad wings and preference for open habitats where mammal activity can be watched from above. The species’ hunting behavior is part of its identification story: a huge hawk circling over grassland is more likely to be this open-country specialist than a forest-adapted raptor.

Could the Upland Buzzard be larger?

The Upland Buzzard, Buteo hemilasius, is the key global comparison because the 2021 Canadian assessment specifically says it may be larger than the Ferruginous Hawk. That statement supports a cautious worldwide qualification, not a definitive replacement of one winner with another.

No supplied source gives a matching set of Upland Buzzard length, wingspan and mass figures measured under the same protocol as the Ferruginous Hawk values above. Without that matched dataset, it would be inaccurate to claim that the Upland Buzzard is certainly heavier, longer or broader-winged in every comparison. The responsible conclusion is that it is a plausible larger global comparator and that the Ferruginous Hawk remains the secure North American answer.

Is a harpy eagle the largest hawk?

No. A harpy eagle is an eagle, not a hawk, so it should not be used as the answer to a hawk-specific title simply because it is a very large bird of prey.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service identifies the Ferruginous Hawk’s scientific name as Buteo regalis and places it in the genus Buteo. “Ferruginous Hawk” is the correct common name for this North American species. “Harpy eagle” refers to a different raptor and a different taxonomic group.

Why common names cause confusion

Everyday bird names vary by region and history. “Hawk” can be applied broadly in conversation, while scientific classification uses genera and species. A careful comparison should therefore state both the common and scientific names, then specify whether it is comparing Buteo hawks, North American species or hawks worldwide.

Ferruginous Hawk versus a pale Red-tailed Hawk

Color can make these two species look similar, especially when a Red-tailed Hawk is unusually pale. The Ferruginous Hawk is generally the larger-looking bird, but size estimates from a distant soaring bird are unreliable.

  • Wing structure: Ferruginous Hawks have a broad-based wing that tapers toward the tip.
  • Flight posture: The shallow-V soaring position is a useful clue.
  • Color pattern: Look for white underparts and tail with rusty shoulders and back in the pale morph.
  • Habitat: Extensive western open country favors Ferruginous Hawk, although range overlap and individual variation mean habitat is supporting evidence rather than proof.

Use several clues together instead of relying on one pale feather pattern or an impression of “big.” A photograph that captures the wing shape and underside is usually more useful than a guess made from a brief silhouette.

How to compare hawk sizes without misleading yourself

  1. Define the scope. Decide whether you mean North American Buteo hawks or every bird commonly called a hawk worldwide.
  2. Choose the measurement. State whether the comparison uses mass, length, wingspan or a combination.
  3. Keep source values separate. Do not merge an approximate assessment figure with a field-guide maximum and present the result as one measured average.
  4. Account for sex and variation. Record whether figures describe females, males, both sexes or an unspecified sample.
  5. Attach the qualification to the conclusion. Say “largest North American Buteo” when that is what the evidence establishes, and reserve “may be larger globally” for the Upland Buzzard comparison.

What the size tells you about this hawk

A body around 60 centimetres long and a wingspan near 150 centimetres create a bird built for efficient soaring over open terrain. The broad wings support long glides, while the large head and powerful body fit a predator that captures small mammals. Its pale and rusty plumage also makes it visible against many grassland and desert backgrounds, especially when it circles in sunlight.

Those proportions explain why the Ferruginous Hawk can look eagle-like to an observer without being an eagle. Large size is a functional adaptation shared by many raptors, not a taxonomic label. Classification comes from the bird’s evolutionary relationships, represented here by its placement in Buteo.

Bottom line on the world’s largest hawk

The Ferruginous Hawk is the most defensible answer for readers who want a single name: it is the largest North American Buteo and reaches approximately 60 cm in length, 150 cm in wingspan and 1.5 kg in mass in the 2021 Canadian assessment. For a strictly global claim, qualify the answer: the Upland Buzzard may be larger, and the available sources do not provide a standardized comparison that proves an uncontested worldwide champion.
