There is no scientifically defensible U.S. ranking of ten “largest rats.” The everyday word rat covers several unrelated rodents, and the available measurements are not collected in a common way. A useful, honest list has four major entries: the true rats (Norway and roof rats), native woodrats or pack rats, and the much larger rat-like nutria. Their sizes, habitats and identification clues are different, so the comparisons below always identify the animal’s biological group and the measurement being reported.
Why a top-ten ranking does not work
Norway rats and roof rats belong to the genus Rattus. Woodrats, also called pack rats, are native rodents in the genus Neotoma. Nutria (Myocastor coypus) are large, semi-aquatic rodents native to South America, not true rats. They are included here because people commonly describe them as giant rats and because their size makes them the largest animal in this broad, everyday category.

The published figures also measure different things. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gives a Norway rat length of 13–18 inches, while the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) reports 30–50 centimetres (12–19 inches) including the tail, plus a weight of 280–540 grams (10–19 ounces). Those are ranges from different agencies, not a record size and not a controlled, species-by-species contest. Nutria figures are usually given as body weight, and the material available here does not provide a comparable absolute length for roof rats or individual woodrat species.

The four largest rat or rat-like rodents you may encounter
| Animal | Biological group | Evidence-backed size information | Typical encounter setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nutria | Rat-like rodent; not Rattus | Adults weigh 15–20 pounds, according to USDA APHIS | Freshwater marshes, ponds, canals, rivers, bayous and swamps; strongest U.S. populations are along the Gulf Coast |
| Norway rat | True rat, Rattus norvegicus | 13–18 inches (EPA); 30–50 cm total length and 280–540 g in SCDNR guidance | Settlements, sewers, wharves, dumps and salt marshes; reported in every state |
| Woodrats or pack rats | Native rodents, Neotoma spp. | Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks describes them as roughly the size of a common Norway rat; no single species-wide measurement is established here | Native habitats across a broad U.S. range, including forests and rocky areas |
| Roof rat | True rat, Rattus rattus | UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes it as smaller and sleeker than a Norway rat; a comparable absolute measurement is not established here | Coastal areas, trees, shrubs, dense vegetation and upper parts of buildings |
1. Nutria: the largest animal in this broad “rat” list
USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) describes nutria as “large, semi-aquatic rodents that are native to South America.” Its 2020 fact sheet gives an adult weight of 15–20 pounds. That is many times heavier than the ounce-scale weight reported for Norway rats, which is why a nutria can look enormous when someone calls it a rat.
Nutria spend much of their time around water. APHIS lists freshwater marshes, ponds, drainage canals, rivers, bayous and swamps as characteristic habitat and says the largest U.S. populations occur in coastal Gulf states. An APHIS operational page, modified November 17, 2025, reports established nutria populations in 17 states. “Established” does not mean that every wetland in those states has nutria; local abundance and distribution vary, and wildlife records change over time.
Nutria are an invasive species in the United States. Their semi-aquatic habits mean that a large rodent seen swimming or feeding at the edge of a marsh is more plausibly a nutria than an urban Rattus rat, but appearance alone is not a safe basis for handling or relocation. For current state distribution, consult the USDA APHIS nutria program page and the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species profile.

The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) is the large, stocky rat most often associated with cities and infrastructure. EPA guidance reports a total length of 13–18 inches. SCDNR gives a broader 30–50 cm (12–19 inches) total length, including a 15–23 cm tail, and a weight of 280–540 g (10–19 ounces). Neither agency presents those values as a record maximum.

EPA says Norway rats occur in every U.S. state. SCDNR lists salt marshes, wharves, dumps and sewers among places where they may be found. In practical terms, look near human food waste, storm-water systems, docks and other sheltered sites rather than assuming that a large rat is a wild-country species. The SCDNR Norway rat species page provides the regional measurements and habitat examples.
A long, mostly hairless, scaly-looking tail and a body that appears robust rather than delicate are useful field impressions, but distance, lighting and the animal’s posture can mislead. Observe from a distance and do not attempt to catch an unknown rodent.
3. Woodrats and pack rats: native “rats” with furry tails
Woodrats are not Norway or roof rats. They are native Neotoma rodents, commonly called pack rats. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks says they are roughly the size of a common Norway rat, but the available guidance does not establish one measurement that applies to every woodrat species. Their broad U.S. distribution also includes multiple species with local differences.
The most useful visual clue is the tail. Woodrats have a furred, bushy tail, unlike the mostly bare, scaly tail of a commensal Rattus rat. The Montana FWP guide explains the woodrat comparison and coexistence context. The National Park Service documents bushy-tailed woodrats (pack rats) in Mount Rainier National Park, illustrating that these animals can appear in protected native habitats as well as around buildings.

If you see a rat-sized animal carrying material or moving through rocks, trees or forest edge, a woodrat is a possibility, especially outside dense urban areas. Local species identification still requires geography and a reliable field guide; “pack rat” is a common name, not a single species.
4. Roof rat: the climber that usually stays above ground
Roof rats (Rattus rattus) are generally smaller and sleeker than Norway rats. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources does not provide a directly comparable length in the cited guidance, so assigning an exact size or placing roof rats at a precise rank would overstate the evidence.
These rats climb readily. UC ANR describes nests in shrubs, trees and dense vegetation, as well as upper portions of buildings. EPA’s summary associates roof rats mainly with coastal U.S. areas. Where both species occupy one structure, UC ANR notes a useful pattern: Norway rats tend to be lower, while roof rats are more likely to use higher spaces. The practical clue is therefore behavior and location—an agile rat in a tree canopy, attic or roofline is more suggestive of a roof rat than a sewer-level sighting, but it is not proof.

How to compare their sizes without being misled
Use four questions whenever you see a size claim:
- What is being measured? “Total length” may include the tail; a body-only length will be smaller.
- Is the figure a range or a maximum? The EPA and SCDNR numbers are published ranges, not record animals.
- Is the unit weight or length? Nutria’s 15–20-pound figure is a weight, while Norway-rat figures include length and weight.
- Does the animal belong to the same group? A Neotoma woodrat and a Rattus rat should not be treated as interchangeable species.
These checks prevent a common error: sorting one animal by body length, another by tail-inclusive length and a third by weight, then presenting the result as a precise top ten.
Where you are most likely to encounter each one
Urban and working waterfronts
Norway rats are the most broadly distributed urban candidate. Sewers, refuse areas, wharves, dumps and salt-marsh edges all appear in SCDNR’s habitat description, and EPA reports the species in every state. Roof rats may also occupy buildings, but their climbing behavior makes attics, roof voids, trees and dense plantings more likely locations.
Native forests, mountains and rocky habitat
Woodrats occur across a broad U.S. range and are represented in protected areas such as Mount Rainier National Park. Their furred tail is a better first clue than an attempt to estimate size from a quick sighting.

Wetlands and drainage systems
Nutria are tied to freshwater environments: marshes, ponds, canals, rivers, bayous and swamps. Gulf Coast wetlands contain the largest U.S. populations, but the 17-state establishment figure from APHIS should not be read as uniform occupancy everywhere within those states.

Why you will not find six more reliable entries here
Many other animals have “rat” in a common name, including kangaroo rats. They belong to different rodent groups, and the material available for this question does not provide consistent measurements, ranges and encounter information needed to compare them fairly with the four entries above. Adding six names would create the appearance of a top ten while mixing unrelated animals and unsupported numbers.
A scientifically stronger ten-animal article would need species-level measurements collected under comparable definitions, current distribution records and a clear decision about whether “rat-like” rodents such as nutria are in scope. Until those data are assembled, a shorter, qualified list is more accurate for readers trying to identify what they saw.
Safe observation and handling
Use habitat, tail texture, climbing or swimming behavior and geographic context to narrow an identification, but do not handle a live or dead wild rodent. UC ANR advises using gloves when handling dead rats or used traps in pest-management situations. That advice is a precaution, not an invitation to approach native woodrats or invasive nutria. Keep pets and children away, photograph the animal from a safe distance if legal and practical, and contact local animal-control or wildlife authorities for removal or confirmation.
