The U.S. Geological Survey identifies it as the world’s largest freshwater fish. However, “largest sturgeon ever caught” is not a clean, universally verified ranking: historical accounts use different units and standards, some weights are estimates, and several impressive figures are species-level maximums rather than one documented fish.
The eight entries below therefore present notable reported catches, historical records and biological size benchmarks without pretending they are directly comparable. Each entry identifies what was measured, where the figure came from and how confidently it can be treated as an individual catch.

What is the biggest sturgeon ever caught?
Beluga sturgeon has the strongest claim to the greatest size. The U.S. Geological Survey describes beluga as the world’s largest freshwater fish, and a Food and Agriculture Organization hatchery manual gives beluga maximum values of more than 2,000 kilograms and 4.6 metres. Those are biological maximums, not a certified modern catch ranking.
The frequently repeated “largest sturgeon” story concerns an enormous beluga said to have been taken from the Volga River in 1827. Published accounts disagree about its exact weight and status, and the original record was not verified in the available documentation. It is safer to call it a commonly cited historical report than an authenticated world record.

Other species can also reach extraordinary dimensions. U.S. Geological Survey material gives white sturgeon a potential range of 15–20 feet and nearly one ton. NOAA says mature kaluga may exceed 18 feet and one ton. Those figures show what the species can attain; they do not prove that a particular angler landed a fish at the stated maximum.
Why “largest” records are difficult to compare
Sturgeon records combine several different kinds of evidence. A fish weighed on a certified scale is not equivalent to a length-based estimate, and a technical manual’s maximum is not equivalent to a dated catch. Historical fish were often measured with methods that cannot now be checked.

Eight notable sturgeon reports and size records
These entries are arranged as evidence-based examples, not a definitive one-to-eight ranking. They include individual historical fish, reported records and species benchmarks so the qualification stays attached to every number.
1. Beluga sturgeon: more than 2,000 kilograms and 4.6 metres
The FAO’s Sturgeon Hatchery Manual, published around 2013, lists beluga maximum values above 2,000 kg and 4.6 m. This is the largest clearly stated size benchmark in the available technical material and explains why beluga dominates “biggest sturgeon” searches.
The figures describe the species’ reported maximum potential, not one fish with a documented scale ticket. They should be used to explain beluga biology rather than presented as proof of a particular catch.

2. Beluga from the Sea of Azov: 4.6 metres and 750 kilograms
The same FAO material gives Sea of Azov beluga figures of 4.6 m and 750 kg. The population and location matter: this is a regional value, not a universal weight for every beluga population.
Because the length matches the manual’s broader maximum while the weight is much lower, the example also shows why length alone cannot establish which fish was “largest.” Age, sex, body condition and the timing of measurement all affect mass.
3. North Caspian beluga reported at 576 centimetres in 1940
A California Department of Fish and Wildlife-hosted reference reports a 576 cm beluga caught in the North Caspian in 1940. This is an individually described historical fish with a place and year, making it different from a species maximum.
The reference does not provide the kind of modern, independently audited weighing record that would settle a worldwide ranking. Treat 576 cm as a source-reported historical measurement, not as a certified current record.
4. The often-cited 1827 Volga giant
Many retellings identify an 1827 Volga beluga as the largest sturgeon ever caught. The figure is repeated in secondary literature, but the available source set did not verify the original record, and published versions differ in their stated weight and wording.

Its proper status is therefore “commonly reported historical catch.” It is useful historical context, but a precise weight should not be presented as settled fact, and the fish should not be placed above every other entry in a strict ranking.

The CDFW-hosted reference describes a 1,285-pound, 12.5-foot white sturgeon as a reasonably authentic North American record. Unlike the beluga maximums, this number refers to an individual fish and includes both weight and length.
White sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) is North America’s largest freshwater fish according to U.S. Geological Survey material. The agency gives the species a broad potential size of 15–20 feet and nearly one ton, so the 1,285-pound historical record is substantial without reaching the species’ upper reported potential.
6. White sturgeon: a 1,387-pound report
The same CDFW-hosted reference mentions a 1,387-pound white sturgeon report. It is less secure than the 1,285-pound account because the source distinguishes a reasonably authentic record from a report.
This is why a list that simply sorts numbers from largest to smallest can mislead. The 1,387-pound figure is heavier on paper, but its evidentiary status is weaker; readers should not treat it as a confirmed replacement for the better-supported record.

7. Michigan lake sturgeon: 310 pounds and 7 feet 11 inches
Michigan Department of Natural Resources report RR1883 identifies a 310-pound, 7-foot-11-inch lake sturgeon as the largest documented fish taken in Michigan, according to the report. It is a state-level record, not a claim about every lake sturgeon in North America.
Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) are generally smaller than the very largest beluga and white sturgeon, but a 310-pound fish remains an exceptional individual. The paired weight and length make this entry more useful for comparison than a length-only anecdote.
8. Minnesota lake sturgeon: 80 inches and approximately 165 pounds
A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources news release dated May 4, 2026, describes an 80-inch lake sturgeon recognized as a catch-and-release state record. The fish was not weighed. Its approximately 165-pound weight was estimated from a length-and-girth chart.
That qualification is essential: 165 pounds is not a scale measurement. The Minnesota example belongs in a modern record discussion because the length was documented, but it cannot be compared to a directly weighed fish as though the two measurements had the same precision.
Other giant species that belong in the comparison
Kaluga sturgeon
NOAA Fisheries says mature kaluga sturgeon (Huso dauricus) may exceed 18 feet and one ton. This places kaluga among the world’s most massive freshwater fishes and close to the largest reported white sturgeon dimensions.

NOAA’s wording describes mature-species potential. It does not identify an individual catch with a verified weight, so kaluga should not be inserted into a ranked list of weighed fish on that basis alone.
Canada’s documented lake sturgeon
The Government of Alberta reported in 2024 that the largest lake sturgeon documented in Canada weighed 185 kg. This is a useful national comparison for the species, but the provincial article’s wording should remain attached to the figure: it is the largest documented Canadian example, not a worldwide sturgeon record.

Why old sturgeon catches should not be treated as current fishing targets
Several sturgeon species now face strict conservation rules, and the legal situation varies by species and jurisdiction. California’s white sturgeon information says the fishery is closed and describes restricted, seasonal catch-and-release authorization. That means historic harvest records do not describe what a person may legally do there today.

NOAA states that it is illegal to fish for, catch or keep Atlantic sturgeon. A historical photograph or record from another era cannot be used as permission to target the species now.
- Check the current rules for the exact river, lake, species and season before entering the water.
- Do not remove, weigh or pose a protected fish unless local regulations expressly allow the action.
- For a catch-and-release record, follow the agency’s measurement and reporting procedure rather than improvising with equipment.
- Never infer that a species maximum is a recommended size goal or evidence that large fish are common.
What a genuinely comparable world record would require
A defensible global ranking would need the same rule for every entry: a confirmed species identification, a dated location, a documented individual fish, a direct weight on a known scale, and a clearly defined measurement method. It would also need a decision about whether historical reports, estimated weights and species maxima are excluded.
The available records do not meet one uniform standard. Beluga supplies the strongest case for the greatest biological size; the North Caspian fish and the 1,285-pound white sturgeon provide notable historical individual measurements; Michigan and Minnesota illustrate how state records can differ in weighing method. Keeping those categories separate is more accurate than manufacturing an exact countdown.
