Toronto Zoo is the only facility in this group with an official claim to being Canada’s largest. Its facts sheet lists 287 hectares (710 acres). Four other major destinations—Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo, Zoo de Granby, Assiniboine Park Zoo and Edmonton Valley Zoo—belong on a practical Canadian zoo shortlist, but available official figures do not support a defensible second-through-fifth acreage ranking.
For timing, choose the warm season when you want the longest posted hours and seasonal attractions. Cooler-month visits can still work at year-round zoos, provided you accept shorter schedules or feature closures and check the exact date on the zoo’s calendar.

What “largest zoos in Canada” can—and cannot—mean
Acreage comparisons look simple until you examine what each institution measures. Toronto publishes a total figure of 287 hectares (710 acres), while another current Toronto page describes 520 acres of valley, river, forest, field and meadow ecosystems. Calgary’s current organization page gives 125 acres, but older public descriptions cite 159 hectares or 48 hectares (120 acres). Granby’s official history refers to the 60-acre parcel donated in 1953, which is a founding-land description rather than a current survey. These are different dates and land categories.

Toronto’s leading position is supported by the City of Toronto’s description of it as Canada’s largest zoo and by the zoo’s 287-hectare facts-sheet figure. The other four are included because they are substantial, established destinations with useful visitor information—not because a consistent national measurement proves their order.

The five standout destinations
1. Toronto Zoo — Toronto, Ontario
Toronto Zoo is the clearest answer to the singular question “What is Canada’s largest zoo?” The zoo’s facts sheet reports 287 hectares (710 acres), seven zoogeographic regions and more than 10 kilometres of walking trails. It also records approximately 1.3 million visitors per year. Those figures are institutional facts-sheet statistics; the sheet itself does not display a publication year.
The scale affects how you plan the day. Ten-plus kilometres of trails means the visit is walking-intensive, and seeing several regions takes substantially longer than a quick indoor attraction. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring weather-appropriate layers and decide in advance which regions matter most if you have limited time.
Toronto’s current planning page lists daily hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from October 13, 2026, through March 12, 2027, with last admission one hour before closing. The zoo is described as open every day of the year, but individual exhibits and seasonal features can close. Splash Island, for example, is marked closed for the season during the cited winter schedule. Check the calendar for your exact date rather than assuming summer hours apply in winter.
2. Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo — Calgary, Alberta
The Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo currently describes its site as 125 acres and reports more than 1.5 million visitors annually. That 125-acre figure is the most current organizational statistic in the supplied material. It should not be merged with older descriptions: a Calgary map once used 159 hectares, while a provincial tourism listing gave 48 hectares (120 acres). The differing numbers may reflect changed boundaries or different definitions of the zoo grounds.

Access conditions are particularly important here. The zoo’s destination guidance notes substantial construction around Imagine Asia, and the West Gate is expected to remain closed until at least 2028/2029. Before setting a route, confirm which entrance is operating, where construction affects circulation and whether your preferred exhibit is accessible. A map saved from an earlier trip may no longer match the current visitor flow.
Calgary’s high annual attendance figure indicates a busy, nationally significant destination, but it is not a controlled measure of crowding on any particular day. Use the official calendar and access notices for operational decisions instead of assuming that a weekday or a specific month will be quiet.
3. Zoo de Granby — Granby, Quebec
Zoo de Granby’s official history records that a 60-acre parcel was donated in 1953 to establish the zoo and that the zoo remains at that location. This is valuable context for understanding its long-established footprint, but it is not a current surveyed area and does not establish Granby’s position in a national size ranking.

Granby is best treated as a destination choice for travelers in or near Quebec rather than as a proven “number three” by acreage. The historical 60-acre reference and a modern total-area survey are not interchangeable.
4. Assiniboine Park Zoo — Winnipeg, Manitoba
Assiniboine Park Zoo states that it operates seven days a week year-round unless otherwise noted. Its regular posted hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with gates closing at 3:30 p.m. Holiday exceptions and special events can change that routine, so check the schedule before setting out.
No comparable official area measurement was established for Assiniboine Park Zoo in the available material. That does not indicate a small or large site; it means a like-for-like acreage comparison cannot responsibly be made here. Plan around the published hours, Winnipeg weather and the exhibits you most want to see, rather than an unsupported ranking.
5. Edmonton Valley Zoo — Edmonton, Alberta
Edmonton Valley Zoo publishes seasonal hours rather than one universal annual schedule. For May 9 through September 7, 2026, the City of Edmonton lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with last admission one hour before closing. The city also advises visitors to reserve in advance to guarantee admission and avoid lines.

The supplied official information does not establish a comparable total-area figure or prove a fifth-place area rank. Treat Edmonton Valley Zoo as a prominent Canadian option on this practical shortlist, not as a measured entry in a national acreage league table. If your trip falls outside the stated summer period, verify the applicable seasonal hours before purchasing tickets or planning transport.
Size evidence at a glance
| Zoo | Location | Official size information available | Other useful published figures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto Zoo | Toronto, Ontario | 287 hectares (710 acres), facts sheet; City of Toronto calls it Canada’s largest | Seven zoogeographic regions; more than 10 km of trails; approximately 1.3 million visitors per year |
| Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo | Calgary, Alberta | 125 acres on the current organization page | Over 1.5 million visitors annually; West Gate closure expected until at least 2028/2029 |
| Zoo de Granby | Granby, Quebec | 60-acre founding parcel donated in 1953; historical figure, not a current survey | The zoo remains at the original location according to its official history |
| Assiniboine Park Zoo | Winnipeg, Manitoba | Comparable official area figure not stated on the cited page | Regular hours 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; gates close at 3:30 p.m. |
| Edmonton Valley Zoo | Edmonton, Alberta | Comparable official area figure not stated on the cited page | May 9–September 7, 2026: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; reservations recommended by the city |
The table intentionally keeps historical, current and undefined measurements separate. Combining them into one sorted acreage column would create a false precision that the published evidence does not support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is the ideal time to visit?
There is no universal best month for all five zoos. The right season depends on whether you value longer opening windows, seasonal attractions, weather comfort or the ability to visit during a quieter operational period. None of the cited sources provides a comparable crowd study, so no month or weekday can be promised as the least busy.
Choose the warm season for maximum operating time
Late spring through summer generally offers the longest posted hours at facilities that publish seasonal schedules and gives you the best chance of finding outdoor or water-based features operating. Edmonton’s stated May 9–September 7, 2026 schedule runs until 5 p.m., while Toronto’s winter schedule ends at 4:30 p.m. and requires last admission an hour earlier. Warm weather also makes long outdoor walks more comfortable, although heat, storms and school-holiday demand can affect the experience.

Choose cooler months for a different type of visit
Toronto remains open daily through the winter schedule cited above, so a cool-season trip is feasible if you dress for the forecast and accept shorter hours. Seasonal attractions may be closed; Splash Island is specifically marked closed for the season during Toronto’s October-to-March period. Assiniboine Park Zoo also operates year-round unless otherwise noted, but holiday and event exceptions can alter its ordinary timetable. Winter visits can work well when your priorities are indoor exhibits, a shorter planned route or a city trip that does not depend on every seasonal feature.
Use a date-specific decision process
- Pick the experience first. If you want the broadest access to seasonal attractions and the most daylight for walking, target the warm-season calendar. If you prefer a shorter outing or are already traveling in winter, select a venue with year-round operation and verify closures.
- Open the official calendar for the exact date. Check opening and closing times, last admission, holiday exceptions, special events and exhibit notices. Do this again shortly before departure because construction and seasonal operations can change.
- Account for travel time and entry rules. Toronto’s extensive trail network, Calgary’s gate construction and Edmonton’s reservation advice can all change how early you need to arrive. Build in time for parking, transit, security and the walk from the operating entrance.
- Plan a realistic route. At Toronto, more than 10 kilometres of trails make comfortable footwear and a prioritized region list practical necessities. At any zoo, identify must-see areas first so a late arrival or weather change does not eliminate them.
Planning notes for each city
Toronto
Use the zoo’s current hours rather than a generic “open all year” assumption. For dates from October 13, 2026 to March 12, 2027, the cited schedule is 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with last admission one hour before close. Confirm seasonal exhibit status and allow ample walking time.
Calgary
Check the latest destination guidance before choosing an entrance. The West Gate closure tied to construction around Imagine Asia is expected to continue until at least 2028/2029, so navigation instructions from an older visit may be obsolete.
Recommended Free Tools
Granby
Use Zoo de Granby’s current visit calendar because the available official history does not provide a reliable hours schedule. Do not use the 1953 founding parcel as a proxy for today’s visitor-accessible area.
Winnipeg
Regular hours are 9 a.m.–4 p.m., but gates close at 3:30 p.m. Holiday and special-event changes make a calendar check worthwhile even though the zoo generally operates year-round.
Edmonton
For the published May 9–September 7, 2026 season, hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily and last admission is one hour before closing. Reserve ahead as the city recommends, especially when your schedule cannot accommodate a second attempt.
Bottom line for choosing your zoo
Choose Toronto when the largest officially claimed footprint, multiple zoogeographic regions and extensive trails are the priority. Choose Calgary for a major Alberta destination, while checking construction-related access. Choose Granby, Assiniboine Park or Edmonton based on your route and the date-specific calendar, not an unsupported second-through-fifth size ranking. For timing, start with the warm-season schedule if maximum hours and seasonal features matter; otherwise, a carefully checked cooler-month visit can still be rewarding at the year-round venues.
