A report published the next day counted 12 confirmed dairy herds across five states; additional presumptive-positive results were still awaiting confirmation by the USDA laboratory. These figures describe the April 2024 snapshot, not the current outbreak count.
What USDA confirmed on April 2, 2024
USDA confirmed HPAI in an Idaho dairy herd, which the report identified as the 12th confirmed dairy herd affected across five states. The reported state totals were:
- Texas: 7 confirmed herds
- Kansas: 2 confirmed herds
- Idaho: 1 confirmed herd
- Michigan: 1 confirmed herd
- New Mexico: 1 confirmed herd
These are the counts reported by Successful Farming on April 3, 2024. They should not be read as present-day totals.
Why some test results were still pending
At the time of publication, Ohio had a presumptive-positive result. Confirmatory testing was also under way on presumptive results from Kansas, New Mexico, Ohio, and Texas. A presumptive-positive result indicated that further analysis was needed; it was not the same as a confirmed detection.

The samples were being analyzed by USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa. USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) cautioned that clinical signs shared with other affected cattle did not establish HPAI on their own: “It is important to note that while these samples are from cattle with at least some clinical signs in common with other cattle diagnosed with HPAI, the presence of HPAI should not be considered confirmed until the NVSL analysis is complete.”
What the report said about people
The report described the assessed risk of transmission to people at that time as low. It also reported that a Texas dairy worker with direct cattle contact was being treated for bird flu; CDC said eye redness was the patient’s only symptom. Those are statements about the April 2024 situation, not current public-health guidance.

Successful Farming also reported that USDA testing of H5N1 detected in dairy cattle had not found changes that would make it more transmissible to people. That finding is limited to what USDA testing had detected as reported at the time; it is not a guarantee about future viral changes.
Separate impact at a Texas egg producer
Cal-Maine Foods said HPAI was confirmed at its Texas facility and that it planned to cull 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets. The company reported that production at the facility had temporarily ceased. These figures concern the company’s facility, not additional dairy herds.
