When Lee Asher met Brutus at a shelter, the dog’s former owners had reportedly left a note saying they could no longer manage his behavior and did not feel safe at home. Yet Brutus greeted Asher affectionately, according to an account published by iHeartDogs. That contrast is striking—but one meeting cannot explain what happened in Brutus’s former home or establish how he behaves in every situation.
What the former owners’ note said
In a March 18, 2024 article, Dee Michaels of iHeartDogs reproduced a note attributed to Brutus’s unnamed former owners:

“We’ve decided to surrender Brutus. His behavior is uncontrollable, and we do not feel safe in the house with him. We don’t take this decision lightly, but last night was awful, and we cannot do this any longer.”

The wording conveys how serious the situation felt to the people who wrote it, but the article does not identify them or independently authenticate the note. It also says the reason for the family’s decision is not known for sure. Nothing in the account establishes what happened during the night they described.

How Brutus behaved when Lee Asher met him
The iHeartDogs account says Asher met Brutus at the shelter and saw a markedly different side of him: Brutus showed affection, gave kisses and rolled over for belly rubs. Asher wanted to see how the dog would interact with his other dogs.
Those details describe one reported encounter, not a formal behavior evaluation. A dog can respond differently across people, settings and circumstances, so the affectionate meeting neither proves the former owners’ concerns were unfounded nor shows how Brutus would behave in another situation.

- Why Brutus was surrendered: The former family’s reasons and the events behind the note remain unclear.
- How he did with Asher’s dogs: The article says Asher planned to observe that interaction, but does not establish its outcome.
- What Brutus was like more broadly: The reported meeting offers a glimpse, not a complete picture of his behavior.
The story was reported by Dee Michaels for iHeartDogs on March 18, 2024, which credits The Dodo via YouTube. The available account does not include shelter records, the original video, or statements from Brutus’s former owners.
