Yes—leopard geckos should be offered low-level UVB. Current RSPCA guidance recommends a protected UVB gradient, with a measured basking-zone index (UVI) of about 0.7 and access to areas that read zero. Although leopard geckos are most active at dawn, dusk and night, veterinary lighting guidance reports that twilight-active and nocturnal reptiles can raise vitamin D levels after UV exposure.
UVB lets skin produce vitamin D3, which helps the body absorb and use calcium. It does not replace calcium, careful feeding or veterinary care. The safe lamp depends on your enclosure’s height, lid mesh, reflector and the distance between the tube and the gecko, so a percentage printed on a package is not a universal prescription.

Why UVB matters to a leopard gecko
Ultraviolet-B radiation triggers vitamin D3 production in the skin. Vitamin D3 then supports calcium absorption and calcium use in bones, muscles and other tissues. If lighting, dietary calcium and supplementation are poorly matched, a gecko can develop skeletal and neuromuscular problems, including metabolic bone disease (MBD). UVB is one part of that system, not a guarantee against disease by itself.

That behavior does not prove that they receive no benefit from UVB. VCA Animal Hospitals’ reptile-lighting guidance (updated August 20, 2019) notes that twilight-active and nocturnal reptiles can increase vitamin D concentrations following UV exposure. A captive gecko should therefore be able to choose brief, low-intensity exposure rather than being forced into bright light.

Frances M. Baines’s 2024 LafeberVet education material describes species-specific UV requirements using Ferguson Zones. The practical implication is to design exposure around a leopard gecko’s natural behavior: a short, low-level UV area beside deep shade and secure retreats.
What “the right amount” means
A gradient, not an enclosure filled with UVB
The RSPCA’s current leopard-gecko guidance targets approximately UVI 0.7 in the basking zone, tapering to zero in the shaded area. The cooler end should be more shaded. This lets the gecko thermoregulate and decide when to expose itself, an important safeguard against excessive radiation and overheating.
UVI is a measurement at the animal’s position, not a lamp label. A tube marked 2%, 5% or another percentage does not tell you what reaches the gecko through a particular lid at a particular distance. Tube design, reflector, mesh, enclosure height and the gecko’s ability to move away all change the delivered exposure.

Why shade is part of the lighting system
Provide at least one fully shaded retreat at the warm end, another in the cool end and cover beneath the tube so the gecko can get out of direct rays. Cork, dense foliage, hides and a solid-roofed retreat can create usable shade. Do not arrange the lamp so every route between hides passes through UVB. The target is choice: measurable low exposure in one zone and zero or near-zero readings where the animal can withdraw.

Choosing equipment for a leopard-gecko enclosure
| Component | What the guidance supports | How to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| UVB source | A low-output reptile UVB tube; the RSPCA care sheet gives a general 2–5% tube range. | Treat 2–5% as starting guidance, not a prescription. Use the lamp maker’s distance chart and verify exposure at gecko level. |
| Reflector and fixture | A compatible reflector directs UVB over part of the enclosure. | Use the reflector specified for the tube and fixture. A mismatched reflector can alter output and coverage. |
| Coverage | Place the tube over roughly one-half to one-third of the enclosure length, toward the warm end. | Leave an unlit, shaded route to the cool end. Adjust placement if hides or décor block the basking zone. |
| Guard | The lamp should be protected against burns and breakage injuries. | Fit a secure guard that does not allow the gecko to touch the hot tube or pull the fixture down. |
| Timer | The RSPCA care sheet gives a 12-hour-on/12-hour-off schedule. | Use a reliable timer and keep the daily cycle consistent; turn UVB off at night. |
| UVI meter (optional but useful) | The RSPCA recommends checking exposure at the animal’s level. | A suitable meter, such as the Solarmeter 6.5/6.5R discussed in Baines’s educational material, can show whether your installed setup is near the intended gradient. |
When buying a tube, prioritize a reptile-specific low-output model with a compatible reflector and fixture. Product percentages are useful for identifying a lamp category, but they cannot substitute for the manufacturer’s distance chart or a measurement in your enclosure.
How to install UVB step by step
- Measure the enclosure first. Record the interior height from the planned lamp position to the highest surface where the gecko can stand. Note whether the tube will sit inside the enclosure or above a mesh lid, and identify the mesh type and thickness.
- Select the tube and reflector together. Follow the manufacturer’s chart for the tube, reflector and mounting orientation. Do not combine a strong reflector or a short distance with a lamp chosen only by its printed percentage.
- Mount the lamp at the warm end. Position it over approximately one-half to one-third of the enclosure length, alongside the basking area rather than over the entire habitat. This creates a light gradient that follows the heat gradient.
- Install a rigid guard. Secure the guard and fixture so the gecko cannot climb onto the tube, contact the hot surface or knock the lamp into the enclosure. Check the guard after moving décor or cleaning.
- Build the shade structure. Place a warm hide, a cool hide and additional cover under and beside the tube. The gecko must be able to move from the UV zone into full shade without crossing an exposed open area.
- Set the timer. Run UVB for 12 hours and keep it off for 12 hours, as specified in the RSPCA care sheet. If other daytime lamps are used, coordinate their schedule rather than leaving a bright lamp on overnight.
- Measure at gecko level. If you have a UVI meter, hold its sensor where the gecko’s back would be in the basking zone, oriented toward the lamp. Measure the shaded end as well. Aim for about UVI 0.7 in the basking zone and zero in the designated shade, then record the readings and date.
- Recheck after final decorating. Substrate depth, a new hide, a raised rock or a changed lid can move the gecko closer to or farther from the tube. Measure again whenever the geometry changes.
Distance, mesh and enclosure geometry
UVB intensity generally falls as distance increases, while a mesh lid blocks part of the output. The amount blocked depends on the mesh’s material, thickness, hole size and how far the tube sits above it. A tall enclosure may therefore need a different tube or mounting position from a shallow enclosure, even when both lamps carry the same percentage label.
Use the exact current distance chart supplied with your tube and reflector. If the chart assumes an unobstructed lamp but your tube is above mesh, treat that as a different installation and verify it at animal level. Do not raise the lamp simply to make the enclosure look brighter, and do not lower it until the gecko can approach the tube without a guarded, measured safe distance.
Keep the basking surface, upper ledges and climbing décor in mind. The relevant distance is the shortest distance at which the gecko can actually place its body, not the distance to the substrate. If a new ledge produces a higher UVI than intended, remove it, relocate the tube or add shade.

Lighting schedule and maintenance
Daily operation
Keep UVB on for the 12-hour daytime period and off at night. Leopard geckos need darkness to maintain a normal day–night rhythm; UVB should not be used as a night-light. A timer prevents accidental long photoperiods when household schedules change.
Output declines before visible light does
A tube may continue to glow after its useful UVB output has fallen. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement interval rather than judging the lamp by visible brightness. Where possible, check UVI periodically with a suitable meter, especially after the first installation, after moving the lamp and as the tube approaches its stated service life. Record the installation date on the fixture so a replacement is not forgotten.
Cleaning and safety checks
- Disconnect power before cleaning the fixture or guard.
- Keep dust, shed skin and water spots off the tube and reflector; deposits can change output and create hot spots.
- Inspect mounts, guards and cables for looseness or chewing damage.
- Confirm that mesh, décor and hides have not shifted into the gecko’s closest approach path.
UVB, calcium and vitamin D3 supplements
UVB changes the supplementation plan, but it does not eliminate calcium care. Offer an appropriate calcium source as part of the feeding routine and use a reptile vitamin product according to veterinary or product guidance. The correct D3 amount depends on the measured UVB exposure, feeder-insect schedule, product concentration and the individual gecko.
The RSPCA states that a well-set UV system means a leopard gecko will not need a lot of supplemental vitamin D3. A veterinarian-reviewed guide from Aliso Beach Animal Clinic likewise advises considering the entire feeding and lighting plan and warns that excessive supplementation can cause disease. Because products differ in concentration, a fixed “every feeding” or “once a week” D3 rule is not safe to apply to every enclosure.

| Approach | What you can control | What still must be managed |
|---|---|---|
| Measured low-level UVB plus supplements | Exposure zone, shade access, schedule and lamp maintenance are visible and adjustable. | Calcium intake, product concentration, feeding frequency and veterinary review remain necessary. |
| Relying mainly on oral D3 | Dose can be delivered through a supplement when UVB is unavailable or unsuitable. | There is no basking-zone exposure for the gecko to regulate behaviorally; dosing errors and over-supplementation remain concerns. |
These are husbandry choices, not a product trial proving one method superior in every home. For a gecko with a history of MBD, kidney disease, poor appetite or abnormal growth, ask a reptile veterinarian to set the calcium and D3 plan rather than changing doses yourself.

“The lamp says 5%, so the setup is correct.”
Corrective action: treat the label as a category, then check the manufacturer’s distance chart and measure UVI where the gecko stands. Change the mounting height, reflector or tube only after considering mesh and the animal’s highest accessible surface.
“The whole enclosure should receive UVB.”
Corrective action: shorten the coverage to the warm-end portion, add overhead and side shade, and preserve a route to a zero-reading retreat. Uniform exposure removes the gecko’s ability to select its own dose.

“The mesh blocks all UVB, so I can ignore the lamp.”
Corrective action: assume mesh reduces output, not that it removes it. Measure through the installed lid or follow the maker’s mesh-specific guidance. A tube above mesh can still deliver meaningful UVB at a short distance.

“Visible light proves the tube still works.”
Corrective action: track the replacement date and use a UVI meter when possible. Replace the tube according to its instructions even if it still appears bright.
“More D3 is safer if UVB is weak.”
Corrective action: do not compensate with an improvised high dose. Review the lamp position, mesh, distance and supplement label with a reptile veterinarian; excessive supplementation can also harm a gecko.
Red-eyed morphs and other individual considerations
The RSPCA advises asking a reptile veterinarian about red-eyed morphs that may find bright light damaging. Use extra care with lamp intensity, visual access to shade and the gecko’s behavior. Squinting, persistent avoidance, eye changes, lethargy or failure to eat warrants veterinary assessment rather than simply removing UVB or increasing supplements.

A practical inspection checklist
- The lamp is a reptile UVB tube with a compatible reflector and a secure guard.
- Coverage is limited to the warm-end portion, roughly one-half to one-third of enclosure length.
- The gecko can reach a basking zone near UVI 0.7 and then move into measured shade that reads zero.
- The shortest distance includes the highest ledge or hide the gecko can climb onto.
- Mesh, reflector and mounting height match the manufacturer’s chart, or the finished setup has been measured.
- UVB runs on a consistent 12-hour-on/12-hour-off timer and is off at night.
- The tube’s installation date is recorded, and output is checked or replaced on schedule.
- Calcium and D3 products are selected as part of the full diet and lighting plan, not by a universal dose.
- A reptile veterinarian has advised on red-eyed morphs or any gecko with illness signs.
Bottom line for keepers
Offer low-level UVB to a leopard gecko, but engineer it as a choice-based gradient rather than a bright enclosure. A guarded tube over the warm end, a measured basking UVI near 0.7, full shade at the cool end, a 12-hour schedule and a supplement plan matched to the actual exposure provide a defensible starting point. Recheck the setup whenever the lamp, mesh, décor or gecko’s access height changes.
