Expect regular brushing and coat checks, extra attention during seasonal moults, a hay-centered diet, ample room to move, daily interaction, and access to a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.
What makes a Lionhead different?
The Lionhead’s long fur around the neck forms its characteristic mane. That coat can mat, so grooming is a more noticeable part of care than it is for a short-haired rabbit. PDSA gives an average adult weight of about 1.5 kg, while PetMD lists 2.5–3.75 lb; the sources’ figures differ, so use an individual rabbit’s veterinary assessment rather than treating either as a precise target. PetMD says the breed was officially recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 2013.
For lifespan, PDSA and PetMD each give a breed-specific average of 7–9 years. The RSPCA’s general rabbit guide says rabbits in safe, stimulating environments with suitable food, health checks, and companionship can typically live 8–12 years, sometimes longer; that broader range is not a Lionhead-specific promise.
How much grooming does a Lionhead need?
Published schedules differ. PDSA advises daily grooming of the long neck fur and weekly grooming of the rest of the coat. PetMD recommends brushing two to three times weekly, increasing to daily in spring and fall moulting. These are source-specific guides, not a single rule for every rabbit: check the individual coat for loose fur, tangles, and mats, and adjust the routine if the mane is dense or starts to knot.

Regular brushing removes loose hair that a rabbit might otherwise swallow while grooming itself. PetMD distinguishes an uncommon hairball obstruction from gastrointestinal stasis, a separate and serious digestive problem; a digestive emergency should not automatically be blamed on hairballs. Wet, tangled, or matted fur can also increase flystrike risk, particularly for rabbits kept outdoors. A soft brush and comb are useful basic equipment; Hong Kong government guidance says long-haired rabbits need regular brushing and that rabbits generally do not need baths.
What should a Lionhead eat?
Like other rabbits, Lionheads need a high-fiber, hay-centered diet, fresh water, suitable greens, and measured commercial pellets. PDSA’s UK-facing daily example is hay at least equal to the rabbit’s body size, a handful of suitable fresh greens twice daily, and one tablespoon of commercial rabbit nuggets; it gives twice that nugget amount for rabbits over 3.5 kg. This is general guidance, not an individualized feeding prescription. The Hong Kong government guide also identifies grass hay and fresh green vegetables as staples, advises limiting sweet fruit and avoiding overfeeding, and recommends fresh water at all times.

Diet matters to dental health as well as digestion. Hay encourages normal chewing, but it cannot correct malocclusion—misaligned teeth that may grow abnormally. PetMD notes that overgrown teeth can interfere with eating and cause oral injury. Reduced appetite, drooling, pawing at the face, or facial swelling merit veterinary assessment.
How much space and company does a Lionhead need?
For domestic rabbits, the UK RSPCA recommends a minimum area of 3 m × 2 m × 1 m so they can move, play, exercise, hide, and show normal behaviors; a hutch alone does not meet that guidance. Hong Kong government guidance likewise recommends a spacious playpen or enclosure with room for a hiding place, litter tray, bowls, and movement, and cautions against keeping rabbits confined to a cage or on wire flooring. These are jurisdiction-specific welfare recommendations, not a universal legal standard.

Lionheads can thrive indoors, where they can explore safely and interact with people every day; Rabbit.org recommends a large indoor space such as a pen. Exercise and enrichment should be part of the setup, not limited to time in a small cage. Rabbits are social animals, and PDSA and RSPCA emphasize compatible rabbit companionship. If you plan to keep two, allow for careful bonding and individual compatibility: two rabbits are not guaranteed to get along immediately.
Which health signs need prompt veterinary attention?
Rabbits can become seriously ill quickly when they stop eating or producing droppings. Contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian promptly if a Lionhead eats much less or stops eating, produces markedly fewer or no droppings, or becomes unusually lethargic. Do not try to manage an acute digestive problem at home.

PetMD discusses dental disease, gastrointestinal stasis, hairball obstruction, flystrike, mites, and E. cuniculi among rabbit health concerns. A veterinarian familiar with rabbits can assess symptoms and advise on region-appropriate preventive care, vaccinations, and neutering.

PDSA estimates a Lionhead’s average UK purchase price at £30 and its UK lifetime essential care costs at £7,900–£10,000. The lifetime estimate includes items such as suitable housing, grooming equipment, food and a bowl, preventive treatment, vaccinations, neutering, toys, a carrier, and pet insurance. It excludes the purchase price, holiday care and other non-essential items, and potential veterinary treatment beyond the specified assumptions, including costs subject to an insurance excess. PDSA says keeping rabbits in pairs doubles its estimate. These are PDSA figures for a UK context, not a current quote for another country or an individual rabbit.
