For most cats, the priority is a complete and balanced food suited to their life stage. A food’s antioxidant claim—or a supplement’s ingredient list—is not proof that it prevents disease or improves lifespan. Ask your veterinarian before adding supplements or changing food to manage a health condition.
What antioxidants do in a cat’s diet
Antioxidants are substances and biological systems involved in limiting oxidation and related cell damage. Nutrients discussed in feline feeding research include vitamins E and C and beta-carotene. Their presence can be relevant to nutrition, but the word “antioxidant” alone does not show that a food is nutritionally suitable or clinically beneficial for an individual cat.
Some feline studies have measured oxidative-stress or DNA-damage markers after a particular dietary intervention. Such findings describe the animals, diet, comparison and outcomes in that study; they do not establish that a particular commercial food prevents disease or extends the lifespan of cats generally.
Why a balanced food matters more than an antioxidant claim
Cats need specific nutrients in appropriate amounts. Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises that “more is not always better,” especially for vitamins and minerals. A complete-and-balanced food should be appropriate for the cat’s life stage; Cornell describes commercial cat foods as developed to provide balanced nutrients and calories.

When comparing foods, look for a nutritional adequacy statement showing that the food is complete and balanced for the relevant life stage. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) also recommends considering the manufacturer’s nutrition expertise and quality controls. An ingredient list does not establish ingredient quality or the overall quality of a food, so colorful ingredients or antioxidant marketing are not enough to make a choice.
What studies in cats do—and do not—show
Research measuring oxidative-stress markers
A 2024 study examined dietary antioxidants and measured outcomes related to free-radical damage in dogs and cats. Its findings are specific to the study’s intervention and endpoints. Notably, the control food already met AAFCO complete-and-balanced requirements, so the study should not be read as proof that ordinary adequate food is deficient or that every cat benefits from extra antioxidants. Research in cats with renal insufficiency
A 2006 study of cats with spontaneous renal insufficiency reported reductions in some DNA-damage measures after four weeks on a food supplemented with vitamins E and C and beta-carotene. That result applies to the studied cats, diet and measured outcomes. It is not a general dose recommendation, proof of a benefit for healthy cats, or a reason to self-treat kidney disease. Should you give your cat antioxidant or vitamin supplements?
Usually, not without veterinary advice. AAFCO says healthy dogs and cats eating a complete-and-balanced diet appropriate to their life stage generally do not need supplements. Adding nutrients on top of an adequate diet can push intake beyond upper limits, and a label may not disclose every nutrient amount. Guessing what is missing and stacking products can therefore create risk rather than solve a problem. AAFCO’s supplement guidance advises consulting a veterinarian before introducing them.

Cornell likewise notes that supplements are usually unnecessary with a balanced and complete diet and can be harmful without veterinary approval. A veterinarian can assess the cat’s diet, health and total nutrient intake, and determine whether a targeted supplement or therapeutic food is appropriate. Cornell’s guide to feeding your cat explains the importance of balanced nutrition and life-stage suitability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare antioxidant-forward foods
- Check nutritional adequacy: Is the food complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage?
- Look beyond the claim: Is there evidence of relevant feline health outcomes, or only a list of ingredients or a biomarker result?
- Account for health conditions: Does your cat have a diagnosis that calls for a veterinary therapeutic diet or targeted supplementation?
- Consider total intake: Has a veterinarian assessed the nutrients in the food and any additional products together?
- Evaluate the manufacturer: Is information available about nutrition expertise and quality controls? Ingredient order alone cannot answer that.
WSAVA’s nutrition guidelines support tailoring nutrition to the individual animal and assessing food labels carefully. A suitable complete-and-balanced food for the cat’s life stage is a better starting point than choosing solely for an antioxidant claim.
