That makes household conditions and your tolerance for stirring and monitoring the litter important parts of the decision.
What Litter Pearls Micro Crystals Unscented is
The product page describes Litter Pearls Micro Crystals Unscented as fragrance-free, non-clumping, lightweight, absorbent, and gentle on paws. Its crystals absorb liquid instead of forming scoopable clumps. The manufacturer says its ODORBOND technology neutralizes ammonia odor for “up to 30 days” when the litter is used as directed; that is a qualified product claim, not a guaranteed result for every cat or home. The product comparison also labels Micro Crystals “99.9% Dust-Free.” That is the manufacturer’s claim; Cats.com reviewer Sobus described the litter she tested as low-dust, but not dust-free.

How to set it up and maintain it
- Prepare the box: Start with a clean litter box and pour in enough litter to make a two-inch layer.
- Remove solids daily: Scoop out feces and other solid waste. Urine is absorbed into the crystals, so there are no urine clumps to remove.
- Stir the crystals daily: Mix them thoroughly to help distribute absorbed liquid through the litter.
- Replace the litter as needed: The manufacturer recommends emptying the box, cleaning and drying it, then refilling it every 30 days or sooner if needed. Put used litter in the trash; do not flush it.
The manufacturer says a bag can last up to a month for one cat with proper care. Multiple cats, high humidity, and increased urination can shorten that interval. Keep the box in a low-humidity location where possible. A shallow layer, deep digging, or repeated urination in one spot may contribute to urine pooling at the bottom. The FAQ suggests adding crystals and stirring daily if pooling occurs; if performance changes suddenly, it suggests considering a veterinary check. Litter Pearls FAQ

What the independent review found
In a review last updated September 20, 2025, Cats.com reviewer Katelynn Sobus reported low dust, a few crystals tracked onto carpet, good liquid absorption, and urine odor that was not fully absorbed. She also observed that used crystals took on urine color and became unsightly after several uses. Her cats took a couple of days to adjust before using the box. Sobus scored the litter 4.3/5 overall: 3/5 for odor control, 4/5 for price, 4.5/5 for dust and mess, and 5/5 each for scent and ease of scooping. Those are the reviewer’s ratings, not laboratory measurements or population statistics. The same review page includes individual customer comments that differ: some praise softness and odor control, while others mention tracking or odor concerns. Such comments are anecdotal and do not establish typical performance.

Transition, kittens, and handling
The manufacturer suggests temporarily mixing Micro Crystals with a cat’s current litter to help with the switch, but says long-term mixing with other litter types may reduce performance. Its FAQ says most automatic boxes work with crystal litter, especially when rake spacing or settings can be adjusted; no specific box model is confirmed here.

The manufacturer recommends crystal litter for kittens aged 12 weeks and older and says to supervise kittens so they do not eat the litter. It describes the crystals as non-toxic, but that is not a broad safety guarantee: the FAQ advises monitoring after a small ingestion and contacting a veterinarian if unusual behavior occurs. It also advises pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems to avoid handling used litter because cat feces may contain the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. Used Micro Crystals may change color as they absorb urine; Sobus reported this in her review. Do not treat a color change as a diagnosis. The manufacturer’s FAQ says its separate color-changing health-monitoring crystals are not a medical or diagnostic product and advises contacting a veterinarian about persistent or unusual changes.
