Its figures describe historical milestones—not Dallas shelter statistics today.
What Episode 61 covers
In “The Best Friends Podcast Ep. 61: Ed Jamison – Part One,” Best Friends Animal Society presents Jamison’s career as a case study in shelter leadership: balancing public safety with community relationships, volunteer involvement, rescue partnerships, and positive outcomes for animals. The episode page also says the conversation addresses his decision to join the Army after September 11, 2001, and lessons from his work in animal services. The page provides a summary, not a transcript, so it does not establish verbatim remarks by Jamison. Listen to or read the episode page.

Dallas Animal Services: the historical figures in the episode
The episode page reports that Jamison left his Cleveland role in 2017 to become director of Dallas Animal Services, where annual intake exceeded 32,000 animals that year. His biography on the same page says Dallas intake exceeded 39,000 dogs and cats in 2019, and that he led more than 200 employees. Those intake figures refer to different years and descriptions; they should not be treated as current totals or compared as if they used an identical measure.

Best Friends reports that DAS achieved a 90% save rate in fiscal year 2020. The episode page does not explain how that rate was calculated, so it does not support inferring the denominator or comparing the figure directly with another shelter’s rate. All figures in this section are historical claims reported on the 2021 episode page, not current operating statistics. Best Friends’ Episode 61 page.

What Dallas90 was intended to do
According to the episode page, Dallas90 launched in 2018 as a community rallying call to help save every healthy or treatable pet at the shelter. The framing matters: the initiative was not described simply as a shelter’s internal target. It invited the wider community to take part in lifesaving, connecting shelter outcomes to people and organizations beyond shelter staff.
The leadership themes behind the campaign
- Work with rescue groups. The episode biography lists collaboration with the rescue community among Jamison’s leadership approaches. Rescue relationships can create additional pathways for animals, alongside the shelter’s own work.
- Rebuild volunteer participation. The biography also identifies rebuilding the volunteer base as part of his approach. Volunteers are a community resource, not a substitute for trained staff or public services.
- Use progressive programming. The page names progressive programming as another element of the work, without detailing individual programs or providing standardized outcome comparisons.
- Keep public safety in view. The episode positions Jamison’s animal-control background and shelter leadership together, rather than treating lifesaving and public safety as unrelated responsibilities.
These are themes and reported elements of Jamison’s career, not a universal formula or proof that one campaign alone produced a particular save rate. The episode provides no standardized comparison across jurisdictions.
