The Whisker Litter-Robot 4 automates sifting, not litter-box care: it rotates its globe to separate clumped waste into a drawer, but you still need to supply suitable litter, empty the drawer, clean the unit and monitor its sensors. It is most suitable for cats that accept a covered, rotating box and use clumping litter. Whether it is worth buying depends on whether that reduction in daily scooping outweighs its footprint, upkeep and reliance on sensors and Wi-Fi for app features.
What the Litter-Robot 4 does
After a cat leaves, the Litter-Robot 4 rotates its globe so litter passes through a screen while clumps and waste are sifted into the drawer below. The box returns to its resting position with the litter ready for use. Its automatic cycle reduces routine scooping, but it does not eliminate the need to check and maintain the box.

Which cats and litter are a good fit?
Cat size and comfort with the unit
Whisker specifies a supported cat-weight range of 3–25 lb. A cat also needs to be willing and physically able to enter and use a rotating, enclosed unit. A specification alone cannot establish that an individual cat will accept it; consider your cat’s comfort with enclosed spaces and introduce any new litter box gradually.

Litter compatibility
Whisker recommends high-quality, standard-weight clumping clay litter. The clumps need to hold together for the sifting cycle to separate waste from reusable litter.
- Recommended: standard-weight clumping clay litter.
- May work with caveats: some silica gel beads or crystals, provided they pass through the screen. Translucent or white litter may interfere with litter-level and drawer-full readings.
- Not suitable according to Whisker: strictly absorbent non-clumping litter, loose-clumping litter, newspaper-based litter and absorbent wood pellets.

How sensing and cycle interruption work
The manual describes a Cat Sensing system that combines optical and weight sensors. If it detects a cat attempting to enter while a cycle is underway, the cycle is interrupted; it does not resume until the cat has not been detected for 15 seconds. Whisker’s manual says: “The Litter-Robot is equipped with Anti-Pinch Sensors on both sides of the Waste Drawer Chute to ensure your cat’s safety while using the Litter-Robot.” That is the manufacturer’s description of its design, not an independent safety certification or a guarantee that an automatic appliance is risk-free. Follow the manual, keep the unit in good condition and check on a cat that is new to it.
What upkeep remains
Automation shifts some of the work from daily scooping to monitoring, emptying and periodic cleaning. You remain responsible for maintaining the litter supply, waste drawer and components.
- Empty the waste drawer when needed and check that waste is dropping into it as intended.
- Check and replenish the litter level; the machine does not replace the need to keep an appropriate amount of litter in the globe.
- Clean sensors and other components as needed, following the manual.
- Replace odor-control consumables if you use them. The manual describes the carbon filter as optional for operation and says it lasts approximately one month under normal use. Whisker’s current FAQ recommends replacing carbon filters and OdorTrap packs every 2–4 weeks for optimal odor absorption, with actual frequency depending on use.
The manual says ordinary 10–13 gallon (37–49 L) trash bags can be used instead of dedicated waste-drawer liners. Whisker’s international manual

Odor-control products should not be treated as a promise of odor elimination. Results depend on use and upkeep, including how promptly the drawer is emptied and the unit is cleaned.

Placement, size and weight readings
A firm, level surface is preferable because the scale is most accurate on a firm surface. Whisker says a carpet tray can improve weight-reading accuracy on carpet thicker than 3 mm or on uneven flooring; the tray is not required for the unit to function.
For a sense of physical size, Whisker’s EU product page lists a footprint of 56 × 68.6 cm, an empty weight of 10.9 kg and an entryway of 40 × 40 cm. It lists 15 V DC power. What independent experience can—and cannot—tell you
There is published owner-use experience, but it is not the same as a controlled reliability study, and it does not mean the publisher of this article tested a unit.
- Cats.com’s Litter-Robot 4 review says Whisker provided a free beta unit about a month before launch and that the publisher later bought several units at full retail for team members’ home testing.
- Tom’s Guide’s robotic litter-box comparison, updated April 11, 2025, reports that its cats had used the LR4 for more than a year. Its writer says maintenance was needed to keep it in good operating condition. This is reported experience, not a controlled reliability test.
Those accounts can help illustrate how owners have used the box, but they do not establish a quantified failure rate or independently measured performance statistic. Whisker’s product page showed 14,148 reviews and a 4.5/5 rating when accessed in 2026; those changing, vendor-hosted figures are not an independent reliability measure. Whisker’s product page

A laser fault does not necessarily mean the unit needs a replacement part. Whisker says dust or cat fur can interfere with the sensors and advises cleaning the bezel and sensor area, then running a test cycle. If that does not resolve the fault, Whisker identifies the laser board or base as possible repair parts. Follow the current support instructions rather than treating the box as maintenance-free. Is the Litter-Robot 4 worth it?
It may be worthwhile if you want less routine scooping, your cat is comfortable using it, and you are prepared for drawer emptying, sensor and component cleaning, litter checks and occasional troubleshooting. It is a poorer fit if your cat will not use an enclosed rotating box, you rely on a litter type Whisker says is unsuitable, or you expect the unit to run without ongoing attention. The available sources do not establish a controlled long-term reliability rate, so published user experiences should not be read as a prediction of how long any one unit will last.
