Verdict: The CatGenie A.I. is worth considering if you want a litter system that washes reusable granules and sends waste to a toilet or laundry drain—and your home has the right plumbing, power, space, and Wi-Fi. It is a poor match if you need a plug-and-play box, want to use ordinary clumping litter, or prefer to avoid proprietary consumables. This is a product review based on the manufacturer’s published specifications and guidance, not hands-on testing.
What the CatGenie A.I. does
The A.I. is a plumbed appliance rather than a self-cleaning box with a waste drawer. CatGenie describes a cycle in which the unit scoops solid waste, drains liquid through reusable Washable Granules, washes the bowl and granules with water and SaniSolution, flushes waste and wash water to a connected toilet or laundry drain, then dries the granules with warm air. The process depends on CatGenie’s Washable Granules. The manufacturer says not to use ordinary cat litter in the A.I., warning that other litter can damage the unit, clog pipes, and void the warranty. That makes the A.I. fundamentally different from a conventional litter box: it does not store clumps in a drawer for you to empty, and it is not designed for standard litter.

Before buying, check the intended location for a cold-water supply, an acceptable drain, grounded electrical access, enough floor space, and dependable Wi-Fi if you want full app functionality. CatGenie describes water connection through included T-adapters and drainage through a toilet or washer/laundry drain. Most installations are described as DIY, but a rigid or nonstandard water line may require a compatible replacement connector or other fitting. The installation instructions are the right place to assess the hookup before ordering.

The manufacturer lists the A.I. at 19.25 inches wide at the front, 17.5 inches wide at the top, 21 inches high, 24.5 inches deep including hoses, and 25 pounds assembled. These figures come from CatGenie’s US product listing and should be checked against the listing for the model and market you are buying. Allow room for the hoses and access to the unit, not just the bowl footprint.
- Likely fit: A household with an appropriate water line and drain nearby, electricity, room for a large appliance, reliable Wi-Fi for app features, and willingness to buy the required granules and SaniSolution cartridges.
- Likely poor fit: A home without convenient plumbing or drainage, a buyer seeking a cordless or off-grid setup, or a cat owner who wants to keep using standard clumping litter.
How the cleaning cycle and consumables affect ownership
CatGenie’s A.I. FAQ recommends one to two cleaning cycles per day per cat and says to run at least one cycle each day, even when no solid waste is visible, because liquid waste can pass through the granules. The A.I. requires a SaniSolution cartridge to run, according to the manufacturer. CatGenie estimates that one cartridge lasts 240 cleaning cycles in Cat Activation mode or 120 cycles in Manual or Time Activation modes. Those are manufacturer estimates; actual replacement timing depends on use and selected mode. Include recurring cartridges—and any replacement Washable Granules—in your ownership-cost comparison. On safety, CatGenie says SaniSolution is tested safe for cats when diluted during a normal cleaning cycle. The company separately cautions against exposing people, pets, or surfaces to concentrated solution. The distinction matters: the cartridge contains concentrated solution, while the manufacturer’s claim concerns dilution during normal operation. Its FAQ provides the company’s stated guidance.

CatGenie’s US product page listed the A.I. at $529, with a displayed reduced price of $499 when accessed for this review. These are volatile listing prices, not a lasting quote. The package listing included the A.I. unit, app access, one Fresh Scent SaniSolution cartridge, one bag of Washable Granules, T-adapters, and multiple cleaning cycles. Check the current product listing for the price and exact contents before purchase.
CatGenie’s US FAQ states an 18-month warranty for the A.I. and says an extended warranty may be added at purchase. Warranty coverage and return terms can vary by date and market, so confirm the terms that apply to your order. Do not assume another CatGenie model’s return policy applies to the A.I.; the cited FAQ’s 90-day return statement is for the Whoosh, not the A.I.
