Liver disease in dogs has many possible causes, and its symptoms can resemble those of other illnesses. A veterinarian uses an examination and tests to investigate the cause; treatment and diet depend on the individual diagnosis. Yellowing of the eyes or gums, collapse, seizures or other sudden neurologic changes, significant bleeding, or rapid worsening call for urgent veterinary care.

What liver disease means in dogs

“Liver disease” is an umbrella term for different problems, including acute liver injury, chronic hepatitis, copper-associated injury, biliary disease, congenital vascular abnormalities, infections, toxins, and disease secondary to other conditions. These problems do not all have the same treatment or outlook.

Signs alone cannot confirm liver disease. A dog may have significant disease without an obvious distinctive sign, and many possible symptoms also occur with other illnesses. A veterinarian must interpret the history, examination, and test results together.

Causes of liver disease in dogs

The liver can be affected by injury to its cells, problems involving bile flow, abnormal blood vessels, infection or toxin exposure, and illness elsewhere in the body. Chronic hepatitis is a syndrome rather than one single cause. Copper accumulation is an important concern in some cases, but laboratory results alone may not establish that diagnosis; a biopsy may be needed.

Symptoms of liver disease in dogs

Possible signs include:

  • Reduced appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Jaundice, or yellowing of the whites of the eyes, gums, or skin
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Fluid accumulation in the abdomen
  • Bleeding problems
  • Neurologic changes, including seizures

These signs are not a home diagnostic tool. They can have causes other than liver disease, so contact a veterinarian for an assessment.

When to seek urgent veterinary care

Acute liver failure is an emergency. Seek immediate veterinary assessment if your dog has yellowing, collapse, seizures or other sudden neurologic changes, significant bleeding, or rapid worsening. If you suspect toxin or medication exposure, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to develop.

How veterinarians diagnose liver disease

The work-up generally begins with the dog’s history and physical examination. Screening tests may include a complete blood count (CBC), serum chemistry, and urinalysis. Radiographs or ultrasound can provide additional information, but screening tests and imaging may not identify the exact disease.

Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may recommend targeted tests such as bile-acid testing, fluid analysis, fine-needle aspiration, culture, or biopsy. Before a biopsy, clotting function may need assessment because the liver makes clotting proteins. The veterinarian can explain what each recommended test may clarify and whether its result could affect care.

Treatment and management

Treatment depends on the cause, severity, and complications. Acute cases may require hospitalization and supportive treatment while the underlying cause is investigated. Longer-term care may involve treatment for the identified cause, management of complications, nutritional changes, and veterinary monitoring.

Do not start a medication or supplement, or restrict protein, without veterinary direction. Needs vary by disease and by dog. If your dog is already receiving treatment, ask the veterinary team before changing it.

Diet and nutrition

Veterinary hepatic diets are available, but they are not interchangeable or automatically appropriate for every dog. Discuss food choices with the veterinarian managing your dog’s condition. The right plan depends on the diagnosis and the dog’s individual nutritional needs.

As examples, Hill’s describes Prescription Diet l/d as having controlled, digestible protein and low copper. Royal Canin describes Canine Hepatic as having adapted protein, low copper, and adapted energy. These are manufacturer product descriptions, not independent comparative evidence or a recommendation that either food is right for every dog. Ask your veterinarian which product, if any, suits your dog’s diagnosis, feeding format and tolerance, and nutritional needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are common signs of liver disease in dogs?

Possible signs include appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, jaundice, increased thirst or urination, abdominal fluid, bleeding problems, and neurologic changes such as seizures. These signs can also have other causes, so a veterinarian must evaluate the dog.

How is liver disease diagnosed in dogs?

Veterinarians generally start with the dog’s history and examination, along with screening tests such as a CBC, serum chemistry, and urinalysis. Imaging and targeted tests may help; some dogs need a sample or biopsy to identify a particular disease.

What can I feed a dog with liver disease?

There is no single diet for every liver condition. Ask the veterinarian managing your dog whether a therapeutic hepatic diet or another nutrition plan is appropriate; do not restrict protein or begin a supplement without veterinary guidance.

Does a dog with liver disease need a biopsy?

Not always. A veterinarian may recommend biopsy or another targeted test when screening results and imaging do not identify the cause or when a more specific diagnosis could guide treatment. The veterinarian will also consider the dog’s stability and whether clotting function needs assessment before biopsy.
