Lokiceratops rangiformis was a horned, plant-eating dinosaur with an unusually elaborate skull: no nasal horn, two enormous blade-shaped horns at the back of its frill, and an uneven arrangement of smaller ornaments. Those features helped earn it a name inspired by Loki, the Norse god associated with mischief and trickery.
Formally named on June 20, 2024, the dinosaur lived approximately 78 million years ago in what is now northern Montana, near the Canada–United States border.

Lokiceratops rangiformis was a horned, plant-eating dinosaur with an unusually elaborate skull: no nasal horn, two enormous blade-shaped horns at the back of its frill, and a deliberately uneven arrangement of smaller ornaments. Those features helped earn it a name inspired by Loki, the Norse god associated with mischief and trickery.
The dinosaur was formally named in a peer-reviewed PeerJ study published on June 20, 2024. Its fossil skull was discovered in 2019 in northern Montana, about two miles south of the United States–Canada border. Researchers estimate that the animal lived approximately 78 million years ago, during the Campanian Age of the Late Cretaceous.

What does Lokiceratops rangiformis mean?
The name combines two ideas:
- Lokiceratops refers to Loki and the familiar ceratopsian naming element associated with a “horned face.”
- rangiformis describes the animal’s uneven, caribou- or reindeer-antler-like ornaments.
The full name is therefore commonly explained as something like “Loki’s horned face that looks like a caribou.” The Loki reference is inspired by the dinosaur’s dramatic, curved head ornaments and the popular image of Loki wearing a horned or bladed helmet. It does not mean that the animal’s behavior was known to resemble the mythological figure, or that its horns had a specifically mythological purpose.
A dinosaur with exceptionally strange headgear
Like other ceratopsids, Lokiceratops had a beak, a large bony frill, and a skull built for a plant-eating lifestyle. Its skull, however, combined several features not seen together in the other horned dinosaurs known from the same regional fossil assemblage.
- No nasal horn: Unlike Triceratops and many other ceratopsians, Lokiceratops lacked a prominent horn over its nose.
- Huge rear frill horns: Two large, curved, blade-like horns projected from the back edge of the frill. The researchers and announcing institutions described these as the largest frill horns known in a horned dinosaur or ceratopsian at the time of publication.
- An asymmetrical central ornament: A distinctive ornament near the middle of the frill was not evenly matched from side to side.
- Smaller marginal knobs: Additional knob-like structures decorated the edges of the frill.
“Headgear” is a useful visual shorthand, but these were not detachable or wearable objects. They were bony anatomical structures forming part of the skull. Their exact function is unresolved. The frill and horns may have helped with species recognition, visual display, social signaling, or defense, and more than one function may have been involved.

How big was Lokiceratops?
Institutional estimates place Lokiceratops at roughly 22 feet (6.7 meters) long and about 11,000 pounds (five metric tonnes). These are estimates based on the available fossil material, not measurements of a complete living animal.

Announcement materials described it as the largest horned dinosaur known from its time in the relevant region. That is a more precise claim than saying it was larger than every ceratopsian ever discovered. Later discoveries and different methods of estimating body size can change broad comparisons.
Was Lokiceratops related to Triceratops?
Yes. Both were ceratopsids, the family of large, beaked, frilled horned dinosaurs. But they belonged to different major branches:
| Feature | Lokiceratops | Triceratops |
|---|---|---|
| Major branch | Centrosaurine | Chasmosaurine |
| Age | Approximately 78 million years ago | At least 12 million years later |
| Diet | Herbivorous | Herbivorous |
| Basic skull plan | Beak and large bony frill | Beak and large bony frill |
| Nasal horn | Absent | Present |
Lokiceratops therefore was not an early or unusual species of Triceratops. It was a separate centrosaurine dinosaur that shared a deeper ceratopsid ancestry with Triceratops.
Where and when did it live?
Lokiceratops lived on or near the eastern side of Laramidia, an island-like landmass that covered much of western North America while an inland seaway divided the continent. The fossil locality is in the Kennedy Coulee region along the modern Canada–United States border.
Its remains came from the lower part of the McClelland Ferry Member of the Judith River Formation. Comparable deposits in southern Alberta also contribute to the record of horned dinosaurs from this part of Late Cretaceous North America.

How was the fossil reconstructed?
The skull was found in 2019 in a fragmented condition. Some pieces were approximately the size of dinner plates, while others were much smaller. Fossil preparators and researchers reconstructed the skull from those fragments and compared it with other horned-dinosaur material.
The unusual combination of ornaments was important. A single damaged horn or isolated skull fragment can be difficult to identify, but the reconstructed skull displayed a pattern of features that differed from the ceratopsians already known from the same regional assemblage. Those differences supported recognition of a new species.
The original fossilized skull was integrated into a reconstruction and permanently reposited at the Museum of Evolution in Maribo, Denmark. A replica and related display material were unveiled at the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City. The Utah announcement described that reconstructed skull display as temporary at the time of its 2024 unveiling, so visitors should confirm current exhibition details before planning a trip.

Why this discovery matters
The most important part of the discovery may not be the size of Lokiceratops’ horns. It is the number of different horned dinosaurs found in the same general region and time interval.
The study reported an assemblage containing four centrosaurine taxa and one chasmosaurine taxon from a relatively small area of northern Laramidia. Older, simplified pictures of dinosaur communities sometimes assumed that only one or two closely related horned dinosaurs would occupy a particular ecosystem. Lokiceratops adds to evidence that several distinct ceratopsians could coexist in northern Laramidia.
The researchers interpreted this pattern as evidence of high regional endemism and rapid regional radiations. Their evolutionary analysis placed Lokiceratops with Albertaceratops and Medusaceratops in a group restricted to a relatively small part of northern Laramidia around 78 million years ago.

One possible explanation is that separate regional populations evolved distinctive skull ornaments quickly. Display-driven evolution, including possible sexual selection, could have favored changing horn and frill shapes. But that interpretation is not the same as proving how Lokiceratops chose mates or interacted with members of its species.

Dinosaur diversity may be underestimated when fossil sampling is geographically uneven or when closely related species occupied small ranges. Lokiceratops does not provide a final count of how many dinosaur species lived in North America. It does show why apparently similar communities should not automatically be treated as low-diversity ecosystems.

Why is it named after Loki?
The generic name combines a reference to Loki with a ceratopsian naming element associated with a horned face. The name reflects the dinosaur’s striking skull ornaments; it is not evidence that the animal had a mythological connection or a known behavior associated with Loki.

The Bottom Line
Lokiceratops rangiformis was not simply a strange-looking Triceratops. It was a distinct centrosaurine that lived about 78 million years ago and helps show how many different horned dinosaurs could share northern Laramidia. Its Loki-inspired name comes from an exceptionally ornate skull—especially the huge, curved rear frill horns and uneven, caribou-like ornamentation—while the biological purpose of that display remains an open question.
