“Dog eye infection” symptoms need a diagnosis. Redness, discharge, squinting, and watery eyes can come from conjunctivitis, but also from a corneal ulcer, dry eye, trauma, glaucoma, uveitis, an irritant, or an eyelid problem. If your dog is painful, holding the eye closed, has a cloudy or blue-looking eye, shows vision changes, or has suffered trauma, contact a veterinarian promptly.

“Dog eye infection” describes a group of symptoms, not a diagnosis. Redness, discharge, squinting, or a watery eye may be caused by conjunctivitis, but they can also signal a scratched or ulcerated cornea, dry eye, glaucoma, uveitis, trauma, an eyelid problem, an abnormal eyelash, an irritant, or a foreign object. Because some of these conditions can worsen quickly and threaten vision, a painful, cloudy, injured, or tightly closed eye should be assessed promptly by a veterinarian.

1. Redness and discharge do not prove a bacterial infection

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva—the membrane lining the eyelids and covering part of the eye. It can cause a red or swollen-looking eye, watery or mucous discharge, frequent blinking, and irritation. However, conjunctivitis is a description of inflammation rather than an explanation of why it happened.

Possible causes include:

  • bacterial or viral disease;
  • allergies and environmental irritants such as dust, smoke, shampoo, or grooming products;
  • a foreign body, such as plant material;
  • dry eye, also called keratoconjunctivitis sicca;
  • tear-sac or tear-drainage problems;
  • eyelids that roll inward or outward;
  • eyelashes or hairs rubbing against the eye; and
  • a corneal injury or another painful eye disease.

Yellow or green discharge can occur when bacteria are involved, but its color does not prove that a primary bacterial infection is the whole problem. Bacteria may be taking advantage of an eye already irritated by allergies, a foreign body, inadequate tears, or an eyelid abnormality. Antibiotics alone may therefore fail to resolve the condition if the underlying cause remains.

A problem in one eye may raise suspicion of a foreign object, a tear-sac issue, or localized irritation; disease in both eyes may occur with infection or environmental exposure. These patterns are clues, not reliable diagnoses. A veterinary examination is needed to determine what is actually happening.

2. Eye tests help distinguish conjunctivitis from an ulcer or dry eye

An eye that looks “infected” may need more than a visual inspection. Depending on the history and examination, a veterinarian may perform:

  • A complete ocular examination: The veterinarian checks the eyelids, eyelashes, conjunctiva, cornea, pupils, eye position, and surrounding tissues.
  • A Schirmer tear test: A small test strip measures tear production. Reduced tears can cause chronic irritation, thick discharge, corneal damage, and recurrent infections.
  • Fluorescein staining: This dye highlights scratches and ulcers on the cornea. A superficial injury may be difficult to see without it, while an ulcer typically retains the dye and becomes visible under examination.
  • Additional laboratory tests: In selected cases, the veterinarian may recommend conjunctival cytology, scrapings, culture, or biopsy.

These tests are not excessive when a dog has an eye problem. They help prevent an apparent infection from being treated incorrectly. In particular, identifying a corneal ulcer before choosing an anti-inflammatory medication can be critical: some medications that reduce inflammation are unsafe when the cornea is ulcerated.

3. Squinting, rubbing, cloudiness, or a closed eye can be an emergency warning

Dogs often show eye pain by squinting, blinking excessively, rubbing the face, avoiding light, or holding the eye partly or completely closed. These signs are especially concerning when they appear suddenly or are accompanied by cloudiness, a blue-gray appearance, marked redness, or discharge.

A corneal ulcer is one important possibility. Ulcers can cause pain, tearing, discharge, redness, squinting, rubbing, and a cloudy cornea. They may deepen or become infected, potentially threatening the eye and vision. Dry eye can produce similar signs—including thick discharge, redness, squinting, and rubbing—and untreated dry eye can lead to scarring, secondary corneal infection, and permanent vision loss.

Call a veterinarian promptly if your dog has:

  • yellow, green, bloody, or unusually heavy drainage;
  • a very red or swollen eye;
  • squinting, repeated blinking, light sensitivity, or an eye held closed;
  • a cloudy, blue-looking, or suddenly changed cornea;
  • obvious pain or persistent face rubbing;
  • a visible wound, foreign object, or eyelid injury;
  • sudden vision changes or bumping into objects; or
  • a recurrent episode that keeps returning.

Seek emergency care immediately for severe trauma, a suddenly bulging eye, an eye that has been completely displaced from the socket, or any situation in which the eye is seriously damaged. Do not wait several days to see whether these signs improve.

4. Treatment depends on the cause

There is no single best treatment for every red or discharging eye. Veterinary treatment may include one or more of the following:

  • Prescription topical medication: Antibiotic eye medication may be used when a bacterial component is suspected, but it will not correct every cause of conjunctivitis.
  • Dry-eye treatment: Dogs with inadequate tear production may need lubricants and/or tear-stimulating medication, often as ongoing management rather than a short course.
  • Removal of an irritant or foreign body: A veterinarian may need to remove material from the eye or under an eyelid.
  • Correction of mechanical problems: Eyelid position, abnormal hairs, or eyelashes rubbing the cornea may require a procedure or surgery.
  • Ulcer care: A painful or complicated ulcer may require frequent medication, pain control, an Elizabethan collar, debridement, repeated examinations, or surgery if it is deep or fails to heal.
  • Specialist referral: A veterinary ophthalmologist may be needed for severe ulcers, glaucoma, complicated dry eye, trauma, or unexplained or nonhealing disease.

Following the treatment schedule matters. Some eye conditions require medication several times a day and a recheck to confirm healing. If a prescribed treatment does not seem to help, or the eye becomes more painful, cloudier, or more closed, contact the veterinarian rather than adding another product yourself.

5. Avoid medication experiments—especially steroid eye products

Do not assume that a human eye drop, redness reliever, old prescription, leftover antibiotic, or product intended for another pet is safe for your dog. Eye medicines have specific directions, ingredients, contraindications, and storage requirements. A product intended for the ear must never be substituted for an ophthalmic product unless a veterinarian explicitly directs you to do so.

Steroid-containing eye products deserve particular caution. Corticosteroids can inhibit corneal healing and worsen an ulcer. If a dog has an undiagnosed corneal injury, an apparently sensible anti-inflammatory drop could make the condition more serious.

If you have already used a product and your dog is more painful, more tightly squinting, or showing increased redness or cloudiness, stop and contact a veterinarian promptly unless the prescribing veterinarian gives you different instructions. Have the container or a photograph of its label available so the veterinary team can identify the product.

What you can safely do while arranging veterinary advice

  1. Prevent rubbing. A properly fitted Elizabethan collar may help prevent self-trauma, particularly when a veterinarian suspects an ulcer or the dog cannot stop pawing at the eye.
  2. Remove likely irritants from the environment. Keep shampoo, dust, smoke, sprays, and grooming products away from the face.
  3. Do not pry open a tightly closed eye. Forcing the eyelids apart can increase pain or damage.
  4. Do not pull out an embedded object. Covering or disturbing a penetrating injury can worsen it; seek emergency veterinary care.
  5. Clean only the surrounding fur if necessary. If you use a cleaning product, choose one specifically labeled for ocular or periocular use and follow its label. External cleaning can remove debris, but it does not diagnose or cure an eye disease.

Are dog eye wipes useful?

Dog eye wipes can be a convenient optional accessory for gently cleaning tear debris or crust from the fur around the eye. Use only a product intended for dogs and follow its directions; avoid scrubbing the eyeball or forcing the eyelids open. A wipe is supportive external hygiene, not treatment for infection, a corneal ulcer, dry eye, glaucoma, or trauma.

Do not use eye wipes as a reason to delay care. Worsening redness, pain, squinting, cloudiness, significant discharge, or recurrent symptoms warrants veterinary advice. An Elizabethan collar may also be appropriate to stop rubbing, but it protects the eye from self-trauma; it does not treat the underlying condition.

Quick decision checklist

What you see What to do
Mild, new redness or discharge without pain, cloudiness, vision change, or rubbing Arrange a veterinary appointment and monitor closely. Do not assume it is bacterial.
Recurrent symptoms, thick discharge, marked swelling, frequent blinking, or rubbing Arrange prompt veterinary assessment; the underlying cause may require testing or long-term treatment.
Squinting, holding the eye closed, significant pain, light sensitivity, cloudy or blue-looking cornea, sudden vision change, blood, or a visible wound/foreign object Contact a veterinarian promptly or use urgent veterinary care.
Severe trauma, sudden bulging, or the eyeball completely out of the socket Seek emergency care immediately. Do not pry, pull, or attempt home treatment.

The safest approach to a dog’s “eye infection”

Think of redness and discharge as signals that the eye needs evaluation—not proof that an antibiotic is needed. A timely examination, tear testing, and fluorescein staining can distinguish ordinary conjunctival inflammation from an ulcer, dry eye, or another vision-threatening condition. Until your dog is examined, prevent rubbing, keep irritants away, and avoid unapproved or leftover medication. Prompt veterinary assessment protects both comfort and vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does green or yellow discharge mean my dog has a bacterial eye infection?

No. Redness and discharge can result from bacterial or viral disease, allergies, irritants, foreign bodies, dry eye, eyelid problems, abnormal eyelashes, or corneal injury. Discharge color alone cannot identify the cause.

When is a dog’s eye problem an emergency?

Squinting, holding the eye closed, obvious pain, rubbing, light sensitivity, cloudiness or a blue-looking cornea, sudden vision changes, blood, a visible injury or foreign object, sudden bulging, and severe trauma require prompt or emergency veterinary care.

Can I use human eye drops or old medication for my dog’s eye?

Do not use human eye drops, leftover prescriptions, redness relievers, ear medication, or steroid eye products unless a veterinarian specifically prescribed that product for your dog’s current condition. Steroids can worsen a corneal ulcer.

Do dog eye wipes treat an eye infection?

They may help remove crust or tear debris from the fur around the eye when used as directed, but they do not treat infection, ulcers, dry eye, glaucoma, or trauma. Worsening or painful symptoms still need veterinary assessment.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A dog’s red or discharging eye may not be a simple bacterial infection. Squinting, pain, cloudiness, a closed eye, sudden vision changes, or trauma calls for prompt veterinary care, while steroid or human eye products should never be used without veterinary direction.
