Long-haired cats generally need daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats; short-haired cats usually need it less often, with weekly brushing a useful starting point. But coat length alone does not predict how much a cat sheds. Breed, the individual cat, season, climate, and time spent indoors or outdoors all matter.
How grooming needs differ by coat length

These are starting points, not fixed rules for every cat. Adjust the routine to your cat’s coat condition, comfort, mobility, and tolerance for grooming. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends regular brushing for all cats with hair, with more frequent brushing for long, silky, or curly coats.
Why shedding varies between cats
Shedding is not a simple contest between long and short coats. Breed and individual coat characteristics matter, as do season and environment. In cooler climates, cats that go outdoors may have heavier seasonal shedding cycles. Indoor cats may shed at low levels throughout the year. These patterns are not a reliable way to predict the amount any one cat will shed.
Regular brushing removes loose hair before a cat swallows it while grooming. This can help reduce swallowed hair, but it does not stop shedding. Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that long-haired breeds such as Persians and Maine Coons may have greater hairball risk than short-haired breeds. Repeated hairball episodes or other concerning symptoms warrant a conversation with a veterinarian.

Choose a brush or comb for the coat
For long or medium coats
Try a long-toothed metal comb or a suitable brush to remove loose hair and work through minor tangles. Comb gently, especially where fur is fine or close to the skin. Stop if your cat shows discomfort rather than tugging at a knot.
For short coats
A stiff-bristle brush can suit short coats or sparse undercoats. A grooming mitt is another option for some cats. Let your cat’s reaction guide your choice; there is no single tool that is best for every cat.

- Behind and around the ears
- Under the legs and in the armpits
- Along the chest and collar area

Long fur can be harder to keep clean and untangled, but a cat’s ability to groom itself also matters. Obesity, arthritis, reduced mobility, or painful mouth disease can make self-grooming difficult. If your cat’s grooming habits change or knots begin appearing in places it used to keep clean, consider whether an underlying problem needs veterinary attention.
What to do if you find a mat
A small, loose tangle may come out with gentle combing if your cat remains relaxed. Do not use scissors to cut out a mat: fur can hide skin, and a mat may sit close enough to the skin that it is easy to injure your cat.

Ask a veterinarian or experienced groomer for help if a mat is large or widespread, your cat is distressed or will not tolerate handling, or the skin looks irritated or painful. Do not assume a sudden or unusual coat change is simply a consequence of coat length. Contact a veterinarian if you notice heavy shedding, bald patches, sores, a dull coat, dandruff, or greasy fur. Cats Protection also advises seeking veterinary help when grooming changes suggest a possible health or welfare problem.
