There is no exact universal conversion from a dog’s calendar age to a human age. The familiar “multiply by seven” rule is a rough shortcut, while a 2020 research study proposed the formula human age = 16 × ln(dog age in years) + 31 as a cross-species comparison based on DNA-methylation patterns. For a practical reference, the AAHA/Zoetis chart gives estimates such as 15 human-equivalent years for a 1-year-old dog and 24 for a 2-year-old dog; neither method determines an individual dog’s health or care needs.
Quick dog-years-to-human-years chart
The AAHA/Zoetis chart provides a practical comparison series. Use these figures as estimates, not an exact biological conversion for every dog. The chart notes that its dog-age values are adapted from Dog Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook, 4th Edition (Wiley, 2007).
| Dog’s age | Human-equivalent age on the chart |
|---|---|
| 6 months | 10 years |
| 1 year | 15 years |
| 2 years | 24 years |
| 3 years | 28 years |
| 4 years | 32 years |
| 5 years | 36 years |
| 6 years | 40 years |
| 7 years | 44 years |
| 8 years | 48 years |
| 9 years | 52 years |
| 10 years | 56 years |
| 11 years | 60 years |
| 12 years | 64 years |
| 13 years | 68 years |
| 14 years | 72 years |

How to calculate a dog’s human-equivalent age
- For a quick chart estimate, find the dog’s age in the table and read the corresponding human-equivalent age.
- For a research-formula comparison, use the dog’s age in years, find its natural logarithm (ln), multiply by 16, and add 31.
- Describe either result as an estimate. Breed, life stage, and individual health matter; a conversion is not a diagnosis.
For example, the AAHA/Zoetis chart places a 5-year-old dog at approximately 36 human-equivalent years. The formula gives a different result because it is a separate research comparison.

Why the “multiply by seven” rule is misleading
The familiar rule that one dog year equals seven human years is not a fixed biological exchange rate. UC Davis says it likely arose from comparing rough average lifespans of 10 years for dogs and 70 years for people. That comparison does not account for dogs’ faster early development or differences in aging among breeds.
| Dog’s age | 7× shortcut | AAHA/Zoetis chart |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 7 | 15 |
| 2 years | 14 | 24 |
| 7 years | 49 | 44 |
| 10 years | 70 | 56 |
The comparison illustrates why multiplying by seven is too crude for estimating life stage. It can serve as casual shorthand, but it should not be treated as a precise conversion. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine explains the limits of the shortcut and describes dog-to-human age comparisons as rough estimates.
The research formula: 16 × ln(age) + 31
A 2020 study compared age-associated DNA-methylation patterns in dogs and humans and proposed this equation:
Human age = 16 × ln(dog age in years) + 31
Here, ln means the natural logarithm. To apply the equation:

- Enter the dog’s age in years.
- Find the natural logarithm of that age.
- Multiply the result by 16.
- Add 31.
For a 5-year-old dog, ln(5) is approximately 1.609; multiplying by 16 and adding 31 gives approximately 57. This is the formula’s output, not a clinical determination that every 5-year-old dog is biologically equivalent to a 57-year-old person.
| Dog’s age | Approximate formula result |
|---|---|
| 1 year | 31 |
| 2 years | 42 |
| 3 years | 49 |
| 5 years | 57 |
| 10 years | 68 |
These rounded examples illustrate the equation; they are not a universal age chart. The formula requires an age greater than zero because ln(0) is undefined. The UC Davis calculator accepts whole-number ages greater than one, so do not assume its interface calculates fractional ages or is designed for puppies.
Why the DNA formula and practical chart differ
The chart and equation are different kinds of comparisons. The AAHA/Zoetis chart is a practical reference, while the equation translates age-associated molecular patterns into a human-age comparison. Different methods can produce different numbers without either being a simple arithmetic error.
The 2020 study analyzed blood samples from 104 dogs, mostly Labrador retrievers, aged four weeks to 16 years, and compared the results with previously published human methylation patterns from 320 people aged 1 to 103. The study’s formula is not established as universally accurate for all dog breeds. The National Human Genome Research Institute notes that other breeds need further study.

The study reported broad developmental comparisons, including that the first eight weeks of a dog’s life corresponded roughly to the first nine months of human infancy. It also compared an expected 12-year lifespan for senior Labradors with 70 human years. These are research comparisons, not predictions for every dog or a universal lifespan forecast.
How breed and life stage affect the comparison
Breed and life stage matter when thinking about a dog’s age. The AAHA life-stage guidance emphasizes that life stage involves more than chronological age and that different breeds age at different rates. A single number cannot capture every dog’s development, health, or expected lifespan.
For a general age comparison, use the chart as a reference and state that it is approximate. For health questions or decisions about care, consider the dog’s breed, condition, and life stage with a veterinarian rather than relying on a human-equivalent age.
What a human-equivalent age can and cannot tell you
A human-equivalent age is a way to frame an age comparison; it is not a measurement of an individual dog’s health. UC Davis notes that rough conversions may help frame age-related issues such as arthritis, weight control, and hearing or vision decline. AAHA’s guidance also stresses that life stage includes more than age.

Do not use a conversion alone to decide whether a symptom is normal, whether a dog needs veterinary care, or what its care plan should be. Discuss concerns with a veterinarian who can consider the dog’s breed, condition, and life stage.
Which calculation should you use?
| Method | Useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 7× rule | Casual shorthand | Not a fixed biological rate; it misses nonlinear aging and breed differences. |
| AAHA/Zoetis chart | A quick practical comparison | Reference estimates do not describe every breed or individual dog. |
| 16 × ln(age) + 31 | Understanding a research-based molecular-age comparison | Based on a mostly Labrador sample; not a clinical diagnosis or universally established formula. |
| Veterinary assessment | Questions about health, life stage, and care | Must consider the individual dog; a conversion alone is not enough. |
FAQ
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
The AAHA/Zoetis chart gives an estimate of 15 human-equivalent years. The DNA-derived equation outputs 31 for a 1-year input, but that is a research comparison, not a clinical age for every dog.
How old is a 2-year-old dog in human years?
The AAHA/Zoetis chart gives an estimate of 24 human-equivalent years. The 7× shortcut would give 14, illustrating why it is not a precise conversion.
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. It is a rough traditional shortcut, not a fixed biological rule. Dogs mature quickly early in life, and breed and life stage also matter.

What is the natural-log dog-age formula?
It is human age = 16 × ln(dog age in years) + 31, where ln is the natural logarithm. It is a research-derived comparison based on DNA-methylation patterns, not a definitive measure of an individual dog’s biological age.
Does the DNA formula work for every breed?
It has not been established as universally accurate across breeds. The 2020 study’s 104-dog sample consisted mostly of Labrador retrievers, and the National Human Genome Research Institute says other breeds need further study.
Can I use a human-equivalent age to make care decisions?
No. Use the dog’s actual age, breed, condition, and life stage, and consult a veterinarian for health or care decisions.
