Two birds stand out on published figures: the sword-billed hummingbird exceeds 25 cm from bill tip to tail tip, while the giant hummingbird reaches about 23 cm. Those totals are not directly interchangeable with body size because an exceptionally long bill or ornamental tail can account for much of a bird’s apparent length.
This guide separates total length, body length, bill length and tail-streamer length, explains the evidence behind the best-supported examples, and shows why eight additional places should not be filled with guessed numbers.

What “longest hummingbird” should mean
Bird measurements are useful only when the same measurement is being compared. In hummingbirds, “length” can refer to the straight-line distance from the bill tip to the tail tip, the length of the body itself, bill length, or the extension created by specialized tail feathers. A species can therefore be extraordinarily long in total without having the largest body or the greatest mass.

Males of some hummingbird species have elongated tail streamers, so a male maximum cannot be presented as though it describes every bird in the species. A source date matters as well: a name used for a broad group in an older reference may not have the same taxonomic scope in a current paper.

The most useful convention for the figures below is total bill-tip-to-tail-tip length, with the structures responsible for that total stated explicitly. Where a source does not provide a comparable measurement, the correct entry is “not established,” not a fabricated ranking position.
The two best-supported size records
| Species or taxon | Published total length | What creates the unusual length | Evidence and date | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sword-billed hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) | More than 25 cm | More than 10 cm is attributed to the bill; the tail-tip-to-bill-base section can reach 14 cm. | Guinness World Records, 2017 | A total-length champion, but much of the total is bill rather than body. |
| Giant hummingbird (Patagona taxa) | Up to 23 cm; another reference gives 23 cm | A much larger-bodied bird with a comparatively shorter bill than the sword-billed hummingbird. | Guinness World Records, 2017; Princeton University Press reference excerpt, circa 2006 | Older figures may cover a broader “giant hummingbird” taxon than the Northern and Southern species recognized in a 2025 study. |
These are not two measurements of the same biological feature. The sword-billed figure is driven strongly by bill length, whereas the giant hummingbird’s reputation comes from a substantially heavier, larger body. Calling one “bigger” without specifying the axis hides that distinction.
1. Sword-billed hummingbird: the total-length champion
How long is it?
Guinness World Records identifies the sword-billed hummingbird as the longest hummingbird species and reports a total length exceeding 25 cm from bill tip to tail tip. The same account says more than 10 cm of that measurement is bill, and that the section from the tail tip to the base of the bill can reach 14 cm. These components explain how the species can pass the 25-cm mark while remaining a relatively compact-bodied hummingbird.

The number is a maximum-style record statement, not an average for every individual. It should therefore be written as “more than 25 cm” or “can exceed 25 cm,” rather than as a typical size that all sword-billed hummingbirds attain.

Why the bill matters
The bill is not a decorative measurement added after the fact; it is the defining reason the species leads a total-length comparison. Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird account describes it this way: “This ridiculous hummingbird has the longest bill in relation to its body size of any bird in the world.” That wording emphasizes proportion: the bill is exceptional relative to the bird’s body, not merely long in isolation.
Cornell’s account places the species in the Andes and associates it with long, tubular flowers. Guinness lists tropical montane forests in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Those range descriptions are compatible with a bird adapted to reach floral resources that shorter-billed hummingbirds cannot exploit as effectively, but the length record itself is based on the measurement convention, not on habitat.
How to describe it accurately
- Use “longest hummingbird by reported total bill-tip-to-tail-tip length,” not “largest hummingbird” without qualification.
- Keep the bill contribution in the same sentence as the total so readers do not mistake 25 cm for body length.
- Identify the figure as a Guinness World Records report from 2017.
- Do not convert the record into an average, a body-length measurement or a mass ranking.
2. Giant hummingbird: the large-bodied comparison
The published figure
Guinness World Records reports the giant hummingbird at up to 23 cm. A Princeton University Press reference excerpt, published around 2006, also gives a length of 23 cm. The agreement is useful context, but neither figure should be treated as a perfectly standardized modern measurement series. The sources use the older singular “giant hummingbird” treatment, while recent taxonomy recognizes more than one giant-hummingbird lineage.
Guinness contrasts this bird with the sword-billed hummingbird by describing a shorter bill and a heavier body. In practical terms, the giant hummingbird is the stronger example of a hummingbird that looks long because of its overall body dimensions, rather than because one appendage dominates the measurement.

- Bee & Ant Resistant Design: Comes with an ant moat to help keep ants away, while the 5 feeding ports feature bee-resistant design. 360° perch lets multiple hummingbirds feed comfortably. Plastic base stays cooler than metal for added safety
- Attractive Design: Each hummingbird feeder is handmade with thick, durable glass that's sure to attract hummingbirds with its bright blue colors. Small bubbles on the glass surface are normal and add to the unique charm of each feeder
- Generous Nectar Capacity: Holds a full 22 oz of nectar, meaning fewer refills and fresher nectar longer between changes. Tinted glass makes it easy to peek at the level and know precisely when it's time for a top-up
- Easy to Fill and Clean: Simply unscrew the bottle from the base for filling and cleaning. To assemble, align the grooves in the metal lid and plastic base securely, fill with nectar, then screw the bottle onto the base to ensure a tight seal. Flip upright swiftly to prevent leaks. Why the name needs a date
A 2025 paper in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society discusses Northern and Southern Giant Hummingbirds as distinct species and compares 448 individuals. That treatment means an older 23-cm statement may refer to a broader former taxon. When citing the figure, name the source year and state that its taxonomic scope may differ from the current Northern-versus-Southern treatment.
This is not a minor naming detail. If a historical reference combined two lineages, a reader cannot assume that its maximum applies identically to each currently recognized species. A modern species-by-species ranking would need measurements assigned to the current taxa, with the sex, sample and measurement method reported.
Migration is remarkable but not a length measurement
Cornell Living Bird reported in 2024 that some southern-breeding giant hummingbirds travel up to 5,200 miles round trip. That finding adds ecological context, not another size statistic. A long migration distance cannot be used to infer a longer body, bill or tail, and it should not be placed in a length table.
Why a reliable top-ten list cannot be completed
The title suggests ten ranked species, but the available evidence does not provide ten measurements made on a common basis. The problem is not simply that eight numbers are missing. The available claims may differ in all of the ways that determine rank:
Rank #4
- Bee & Ant Protection - Features 4 metal flower feeding ports with built-in ant moat to keep pests away; 360° metal perches allow multiple hummingbirds to feed comfortably; BPA-free base ensures bird safety
- Leak-Proof Design - 16 oz capacity with durable gasket prevents nectar spills even in wind or when birds land; maintains freshness longer

- Perfect Gift - Ideal for bird lovers, gardeners, and nature enthusiasts; suitable for Anniversary, Birthday, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas
- Different metrics: one source may report total bill-tip-to-tail-tip length while another reports body length or only a bill or tail measurement.
- Different biological subjects: a male with long streamers is not directly comparable with an unsexed specimen or a female.
- Different statistical meanings: “up to” is a maximum, not a mean; a typical range and a record specimen answer different questions.
- Different taxonomies: an older species concept may combine birds that a current study treats as separate species.
- Different source quality: a secondary compilation is not equivalent to a primary measurement study or an established reference account.
One search result associated the black-tailed trainbearer (Lesbia victoriae) with an extremely high adult-male total, largely because of tail streamers. That result was a secondary compilation rather than a primary species account, so the figure is not established here as a record and the bird is not assigned a rank. A responsible article must leave that place unfilled until an ornithological source verifies the measurement, sex, method and maximum status.
Adding six or eight more species from unsourced lists would create a polished-looking table with incomparable numbers. It would also encourage readers to confuse ornamental feather length with body size. The honest result is a verified two-example guide, not a fictional ten-place leaderboard.
How to evaluate a claim about a “longest” hummingbird
- Find the measurement definition. Check whether the number runs from bill tip to tail tip, excludes the bill, measures the body, or refers only to tail feathers.
- Check the sex and statistic. Record whether the source says male, female, adult, average, range or maximum. “Up to” should never be silently rewritten as “usually.”
- Identify the structures driving the number. State whether bill, body or tail streamers account for the unusual length.
- Check the source type. Prefer a primary ornithological study, a recognized institutional account or a clearly identified reference work over an unattributed compilation.
- Record the publication date and taxonomy. A current species name may not match the scope of an older account, especially for giant hummingbirds.
- Compare only like with like. A total-length maximum can be ranked against another total-length maximum only when the methods and biological categories are sufficiently comparable.
If any of these fields is missing, the correct label is “not comparable” or “not established,” rather than a confident numerical position.

Total length is not the same as largest body
Readers often use “longest,” “largest” and “heaviest” as if they were synonyms. They are not. Total length includes projecting structures; body size is a separate concept; mass is another. The sword-billed hummingbird demonstrates the first distinction especially clearly: its bill contributes more than 10 cm to a total exceeding 25 cm. The giant hummingbird demonstrates the second: its published total is shorter, yet its body is described as heavier and larger than the sword-billed bird’s.
Best Value
- ACCOMADATES MULTIPLE BIRDS: Every feeder features four flower-shaped feeding ports with comfortable U-shaped perches that allow several hummingbirds to feed simultaneously, making these hummingbird feeders for outdoors ideal for busy bird watching seasons
- 8 OZ CAPACITY: Each 2-pack of glass hummingbird feeders have 8oz nectar capacity, providing ample feeding space for multiple hummingbirds while maintaining the perfect size for smaller yards and patios
- BUILT-IN ANT MOAT & BEE GUARDS: Add water to the built-in ant moat to keep ants away, while the bee guards prevent bees from consuming the sweet nectar inside the glass feeders. Creating this dual defense system allows each bird uninterrupted access so they can feed peacefully
- EASY FILL & CLEAN: Filling is simple as the wide-mouth glass bottle design makes it easy to add nectar while preventing spills. Cleaning takes little time, as the ant moat, base, and bee guard components are made to disassemble from the feeder so every part can be cleaned thoroughly
- BIRDWATCH WITH EASE: Watch the birds clearly as the glass construction provides high visibility from all angles, while the pinch waist-design creates an attractive and functional feeder that will last you through every bird season
Tail ornaments create a similar trap. A long streamer can increase the distance from the front of the bill to the end of the tail without increasing the length of the torso. For identification, a field observer should note which feathers are included and whether the source is describing a male maximum. A photograph can exaggerate apparent length through perspective, so visual impressions should not replace a stated measurement method.
What a future ten-species ranking would require
A defensible expanded list would need a dataset assembled specifically for comparison. Each record should include the scientific name used at the time of measurement, the current taxonomic placement, sex, age category, sample size, measurement protocol, and whether the value is a maximum, mean or range. The protocol would need to define where the bill measurement starts and ends, how tail streamers are handled, and whether total length is measured on a live bird, a specimen or another standardized basis.
The dataset should then separate at least three leaderboards: total bill-tip-to-tail-tip length, body length excluding bill and tail extensions, and exceptional appendage length. That format would let readers see why the sword-billed hummingbird leads one axis while the giant hummingbird is the more substantial-bodied bird. It would also prevent a species with an unverified secondary-source claim from displacing a species measured under a documented protocol.
Until such a dataset is published, claims beyond the two well-supported examples should be presented as leads for verification, not as settled rankings.
Using field guides without overreading them
A hummingbird field guide or bird identification guide can help with species names, range and visual characters, but a guide’s illustration is not automatically a standardized size measurement. Use the guide to identify the bird, then consult the cited species account or measurement study for the exact definition of length. Pay attention to whether the guide describes a typical bird, a sex-specific form or an exceptional specimen.
For the sword-billed hummingbird, the most informative identification context is the combination of its Andean distribution, association with long tubular flowers and extraordinary bill-to-body proportion. For giant hummingbirds, note the taxonomic treatment and publication date before comparing a 23-cm figure with another species. These habits produce a more accurate understanding than simply sorting names by a single unsourced number.
Bottom line for the “10 longest” question
The strongest documented total-length example is the sword-billed hummingbird, which Guinness World Records reported at more than 25 cm in 2017. The giant hummingbird reaches about 23 cm in Guinness and a Princeton University Press reference excerpt, but its older taxonomic label should be qualified in light of the 2025 Northern-and-Southern treatment. No comparable evidence supports filling the remaining eight positions, so a trustworthy account should stop at verified examples rather than invent a top ten.
