No cat food is approved or endorsed by WSAVA. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s Global Nutrition Committee explicitly says it does not “endorse, approve, recommend or support specific products or companies.” Instead, WSAVA publishes tools that help you and your veterinary team assess a food, its formulation, and the company behind it.
Use the checklist below to choose a nutritionally appropriate diet for your individual cat. Look for a life-stage adequacy statement, qualified formulation expertise, calorie and nutrient information, accessible manufacturer support, and clear answers about production. Treat ingredient-list appeal and words such as “premium” or “holistic” as marketing context—not proof of quality.

Which cat foods are WSAVA approved?
None. WSAVA does not maintain an approved-cat-food list, certify recipes, or award an approval seal to manufacturers. Its Global Nutrition Committee states: “The GNC does not endorse, approve, recommend or support specific products or companies.”
That distinction matters because a package, retailer, advertisement, or review may use “WSAVA approved” as though it were a formal certification. It is not. A food can be assessed against WSAVA’s questions, but it cannot accurately be described as WSAVA-approved.

The useful question is therefore not “Which brand has WSAVA approval?” It is “Can this food and its manufacturer provide the information WSAVA says owners should use when choosing a diet for this cat?”
What WSAVA guidance actually helps you evaluate
WSAVA’s Global Nutrition Committee provides nutrition guidance and educational tools for veterinary teams and owners. Its Guidelines on Selecting Pet Foods were updated on 10 March 2021. The guidance treats the veterinary team as an important source of help when selecting an optimal diet for a particular dog or cat.
The framework focuses on evidence that is relevant to nutrition:

- Who formulated the food, and what qualifications do they have?
- Does the recipe meet the cat’s nutritional needs and life stage?
- How many calories does it provide, and can the company supply a typical nutrient analysis?
- Can you reach the manufacturer with specific questions?
- Who actually makes the food?
- Will the company provide meaningful information rather than relying on marketing language?
These checks do not produce a universal winner. They help you identify whether a particular food is a transparent, nutritionally appropriate option for your cat.
A step-by-step WSAVA checklist for choosing cat food
1. Start with your cat, not the package
Food selection should reflect the individual cat’s nutritional needs and life stage. Age, health status, body condition, activity, and any diagnosed condition can change which diet is appropriate. A food that suits one healthy adult cat may not be suitable for a kitten, a senior cat, or a cat whose veterinarian has identified a specific nutritional concern.
Write down the reason you are choosing the food before comparing labels. For example, you may be selecting a complete diet for a particular life stage, trying to manage calorie intake, or following a veterinary recommendation. This prevents attractive packaging from becoming the decision-maker.
2. Find out who formulated the recipe
Ask the manufacturer for the name, qualifications, and employment status of the person who formulated the food. WSAVA identifies a PhD in animal nutrition or board certification by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN) or the European College of Veterinary Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN) as appropriate qualifications for a nutritionist.

- Heart, Liver & Immune Health - Multifunctional Bites feature powerful antioxidants, premium CoQ10, Cod Liver Oil and Vitamins A, C, & E to promote healthy cardiovascular function, support liver health and enhance immune response.
A company should be able to answer basic formulation questions clearly. “Our food is made by experts” is less useful than the individual’s name, credentials, and relationship with the company. If the company cannot provide this information, record that as a transparency concern rather than assuming the recipe has been reviewed by a qualified nutritionist.
3. Check the nutritional adequacy statement
Look for the package statement explaining whether the food is nutritionally adequate for a stated life stage or purpose. WSAVA’s guide refers to AAFCO and FEDIAF nutrient recommendations for life stages. The adequacy statement is the relevant label information; words such as “premium,” “natural,” or “holistic” do not establish nutritional completeness.
Read the statement exactly as written. Note which life stage it covers and whether it describes a complete diet or a product intended for another role. Do not treat a general marketing claim as proof that the food meets the requirements of your cat.
4. Get calories and a typical nutrient analysis
Ask for the calorie content per gram or serving and record the unit used. WSAVA’s guide says calorie information should be available even where it is not required on the label. Calorie data lets you compare foods on an equivalent basis and discuss an appropriate feeding amount with your veterinary team.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRequest a typical analysis for essential nutrients, including nutrients that may not appear on the package. A guaranteed analysis or a short ingredient panel does not answer every nutritional question. The company should be able to explain the nutrient profile of the finished food in a form that a veterinary professional can evaluate.
5. Test whether the manufacturer is reachable
Use the phone number or email address supplied by the company and ask specific questions. WSAVA advises that company representatives should be easily accessible. A working contact route, prompt response, and clear answers are part of the evidence you are assessing.
Keep the reply with the product information. If the company directs you only to general advertising, refuses to answer, or provides contradictory details, pause before feeding the food as your cat’s primary diet.

6. Identify who makes the food
Determine whether the company makes the food itself or whether another manufacturer produces it for distribution under the company’s name. This is not a reason to reject a food automatically; it is a fact you should know when evaluating quality control and accountability.
Ask for the manufacturing company’s name and the location or facilities involved, to the extent the manufacturer provides that information. The key WSAVA question is whether the company is willing to explain who makes the product.
7. Treat non-answers as meaningful
WSAVA advises caution when a manufacturer cannot or will not provide relevant information. You do not need to prove that a food is unsafe to decide that the available evidence is insufficient for your cat. Choose a product whose company can answer the core questions and discuss the information with your veterinary team.
Use this evaluation table when comparing foods
| WSAVA checkpoint | Question to ask | Evidence to record | Concern if missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formulation expertise | Who formulated the recipe, and what are their qualifications and employment status? | Name and credentials; PhD in animal nutrition or ACVN/ECVCN board certification where applicable | The company cannot identify a qualified nutrition professional |
| Nutritional adequacy | Which life stage or nutritional purpose does the adequacy statement cover? | Exact statement from the current package | The label offers marketing language but no clear adequacy information |
| Calories | How many calories are supplied per gram or serving? | Value, unit, and serving basis | The company cannot provide calorie information |
| Nutrient analysis | Can the company provide a typical analysis for essential nutrients? | The analysis supplied by the manufacturer, including nutrients not printed on the label | Only an ingredient list or incomplete label information is available |
| Manufacturer access | Can owners and veterinary professionals reach a representative? | Working phone number or email and the substance of the reply | Messages go unanswered or receive only promotional text |
| Manufacturing | Who actually makes the food? | In-house manufacturer or identified contract manufacturer | The company will not explain who produces the food |
| Transparency | Will the company provide relevant information when asked? | Written answers and dates, retained with the package details | Important questions are refused or answered inconsistently |
Why the ingredient list cannot identify the “best” food
Ingredient lists are easy to read, so they are often treated as the most important part of a label. WSAVA cautions that an ingredient list does not establish ingredient quality and can mislead owners about the quality of the complete food.
Ingredient order and familiar-sounding ingredients cannot tell you whether the finished recipe supplies the right nutrients in the right amounts for your cat. They also do not reveal who formulated the food, how many calories it contains, or whether the manufacturer can provide a typical nutrient analysis.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the ingredient list as one piece of label information, not as a ranking system. A short list is not automatically superior, and an unfamiliar ingredient is not automatically a problem. Evaluate the adequacy statement, nutrient information, formulation expertise, and manufacturer transparency together.
Ignore “premium” and “holistic” as nutritional proof
WSAVA’s 2021 selection guide describes terms such as “premium” and “holistic” as unregulated and of little practical value for nutritional assessment. These words may influence how a package is positioned, but they do not replace a life-stage adequacy statement or a nutrient analysis.

When two labels use different marketing language, compare the evidence behind them instead. The more useful food is the one whose company can explain the recipe, calories, nutrients, manufacturing, and intended life stage in specific terms.
Match the food to veterinary advice
WSAVA’s guidance is designed to support an individually tailored nutrition plan, not to identify one food that is best for every cat. The association’s nutrition committee co-chair Cecilia Villaverde, DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl ACVN, Dipl ECVCN, says: “Veterinary healthcare teams should, of course, be the first port of call for advice on nutrition.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Involve your veterinary team when your cat’s health, life stage, body condition, or nutritional needs call for an individualized recommendation. Bring the current package, calorie information, adequacy statement, and any written manufacturer answers to the appointment. This gives the clinician information that a front-of-pack claim cannot provide.
Do not infer that a food is appropriate for a medical need merely because it appears highly rated, uses attractive ingredients, or is described as “complete.” The recommendation must fit the individual cat and the purpose for which the food is being fed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two cat foods without claiming WSAVA approval
WSAVA does not rank brands or recipes. If you are comparing two foods, use the same questions for both and write down the answers before choosing.
| Comparison area | Food A | Food B | How to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life-stage adequacy statement | Record the exact current-package wording | Record the exact current-package wording | Prefer the option whose statement matches your cat’s needs and the veterinary plan |
| Formulator | Name, qualification, employment status, or “not stated” | Name, qualification, employment status, or “not stated” | More specific, verifiable formulation information is stronger evidence |
| Calories | Calories per gram or serving | Calories per gram or serving | Use the same unit when discussing portions with your veterinary team |
| Typical nutrient analysis | Supplied, partial, or not stated | Supplied, partial, or not stated | Favor the company that supplies meaningful nutrient information |
| Manufacturer access | Contact route and response quality | Contact route and response quality | A working, informative response is preferable to silence or marketing-only replies |
| Who makes it | In-house or contract manufacturer identified | In-house or contract manufacturer identified | Choose the company that is transparent about production |
This comparison method avoids turning ingredient preferences or popularity into an unsupported WSAVA ranking. It also leaves a record you can revisit if the package, formulation, or manufacturer information changes.
Red flags that should make you pause
- The package or advertisement claims the food is “WSAVA approved.” WSAVA does not approve individual products.
- The company will not identify who formulated the recipe.
- No appropriate nutrition qualification is provided for the person responsible for formulation.
- The food has no clear adequacy statement for your cat’s life stage or intended purpose.
- Calorie information is unavailable when you request it.
- The manufacturer cannot provide a typical analysis for essential nutrients.
- There is no working phone number or email address for questions.
- The company will not say who makes the food.
- Marketing terms are presented as a substitute for nutritional evidence.
- The ingredient list is used as the sole proof of quality.
One missing detail does not prove that a food is harmful. It does mean you have less information with which to evaluate it. WSAVA’s advice is to be cautious when a manufacturer cannot or will not provide relevant information.

A practical record to keep with the bag or can
Food information can change, so retain the details you used when making your decision. A simple record should include:
- Product name, package size, and the date you checked it.
- The exact nutritional adequacy statement and life stage.
- Calories per gram or serving, including the unit.
- The formulator’s name, qualifications, and employment status.
- The typical nutrient analysis supplied by the company.
- The manufacturer’s name and whether production is in-house or contracted.
- The phone number or email used to contact the company.
- The company’s answers to your questions.
- Your veterinary team’s recommendation and the reason the food was selected.
Keeping this record helps you notice when a package statement or formula has changed and gives your veterinary team concrete information to review.
What to do if a company will not answer
Ask the question once more in a specific, written form and keep the response. If the company still will not provide formulation, calorie, nutrient, manufacturing, or adequacy information, do not treat the silence as evidence of WSAVA approval. Compare the food with another option whose manufacturer is more transparent, and ask your veterinary team for guidance suited to your cat.

The core statement that WSAVA does not endorse products comes from the organization’s Global Nutrition Committee material. The detailed selection guide used here was updated on 10 March 2021, while WSAVA’s current guidelines resources continue to provide selection and label guidance.
Individual formulas, package wording, manufacturing arrangements, retail availability, and company contact details can change. Check the current package and obtain up-to-date information from the manufacturer before relying on a specific product claim.
The bottom line
There is no such thing as WSAVA-approved cat food. Choose a food by applying WSAVA’s evaluation questions: match the diet to your cat’s needs and life stage, identify qualified formulation expertise, verify the adequacy statement, obtain calories and a typical nutrient analysis, confirm who makes the food, and judge whether the manufacturer is accessible and transparent. Then review that evidence with your veterinary team rather than relying on an approval badge, ingredient-list impressions, or unregulated marketing terms.
