If a litter has gone missing from your home, search nearby hiding places and contact local animal services. If you have found kittens outdoors without their mother, watch quietly before moving them: she may be nearby, and her absence from view alone does not mean the kittens are abandoned. Act promptly if they are sick, injured, cold, or in immediate danger.
First, identify which situation you’re dealing with
A litter missing from a known home calls for a lost-pet search. Kittens found outside with no mother in sight call for a different response: discreet observation, a check of their condition, and help if they need it. The advice below draws on general guidance from the ASPCA and Alley Cat Allies; it is not a substitute for an assessment of a particular animal by a veterinarian.

If your kittens are missing from home
1. Search small, dark hiding spots first
Look under beds, inside closets, behind large furniture, and in other enclosed spaces where a frightened kitten could hide. Ask everyone in the household where they last saw the litter, and check those areas carefully. A familiar toy, treat jar, or food dish may help draw a hiding kitten out. The ASPCA’s lost-pet guidance also recommends asking neighbors to check places such as garages and sheds, where an animal could be accidentally shut in.

Call local animal control, veterinary hospitals, public and private shelters, and rescue groups. Give a clear description and circulate a recent photo so people can recognize the kittens. Reporting steps differ by location, so follow the instructions of your local agencies and organizations.

3. Pause before picking them up
A mother cat may be looking for food or staying out of sight because people are nearby. If the kittens are safe, keeping the family together is generally best. Do not assume they have been abandoned just because you cannot see the mother.
4. Watch discreetly and give the mother space
Observe from indoors, from a hidden spot, or from a distance that does not disturb the nest. If you cannot watch without being noticed, a trail camera is an optional way to check for the mother’s return; Alley Cat Allies suggests this option in its 2025 Kitten Protection Guide. A camera is not necessary if you can observe quietly.

5. Check the kittens periodically and assess their condition
Several hours of quiet observation can help establish whether the mother is returning. Alley Cat Allies’ 2025 guide says that, when circumstances allow, waiting several hours or even a full day may be appropriate. Check periodically rather than hovering over the nest. Warm, clean, quiet kittens with full bellies may have been fed while their mother was away.

6. Respond to illness, injury, or immediate danger
Contact a veterinarian if a kitten appears sick or hurt. If the spot itself is immediately dangerous, move the kittens only to a nearby safe place if feasible, so their mother can still find them. Avoid relocating healthy kittens simply because she is not visible.
7. Get experienced help if the mother does not return
If observation gives you reason to believe the mother is absent, or the kittens need care, contact a veterinarian, kitten rescue, or shelter for situation-specific advice. Ask whether an experienced foster or nursing mother is available. 8. Make it easier for the mother to return
Once the family is located and safe, you can provide the mother with food, water, and a dry outdoor shelter. Keep dogs and other cats away from the nest and give the family quiet. These steps support a mother who is caring for the litter; they do not replace veterinary or rescue help when kittens are unwell or in danger.
