Probably not in any dependable, deliberate way. A cat may react to sounds or movement while resting, but that awareness does not show that it recognizes danger to you or will step in. If your cat sleeps beside you, comfort, warmth, security, or social closeness are more plausible explanations than a proven guarding role.
Could your cat wake you if something is wrong?
It is possible that a cat will stir or react to an unusual noise while you are asleep. Cats Protection explains that cats can appear asleep while still keeping some awareness of their surroundings; their ears or tails may move as they monitor what is happening around them. But reacting to a sound is not the same as identifying a threat to a person, deliberately warning them, or intervening.

Stories about a particular cat waking or defending someone may be meaningful to that household, but anecdotes cannot show that cats generally provide dependable protection. Why does your cat sleep next to you?
Sleeping close to a person can reflect comfort, warmth, security, trust, or social closeness. PetMD notes that a cat resting on someone’s chest may be drawn to warmth and the soothing proximity of breathing and a heartbeat; its guide to sleeping positions also describes sleeping beside a person as potentially reflecting comfort and a bond. These are possible explanations, not a way to prove what a particular cat intends.

So a cat curled up beside you may simply find the spot pleasant and familiar. Proximity by itself does not establish a guarding motive.
What cat sleep and nighttime activity can—and cannot—tell you
Cats Protection says domestic cats sleep approximately 12 to 18 hours a day, often in intermittent periods. That general figure helps explain why a cat may spend much of the day resting, but it says nothing about whether the cat is keeping watch over a person.

Cats are generally more active around dawn and dusk, according to Cats Protection. A cat moving around at night may be following its normal activity pattern; that behavior should not be read as evidence that it is standing guard. For safety, Cats Protection recommends keeping cats indoors at night, when risks can include road traffic injuries and harm from animals or people. If an indoor cat is restless overnight, daytime play and enrichment—such as toys, climbing spaces, or puzzle feeders—may help provide activity.

A cat that suddenly sleeps much more than usual or hides more may need a veterinary check to rule out an underlying medical problem, Cats Protection advises. A new sleeping spot or changed routine is not, on its own, evidence that your cat has developed a protective instinct. Consider the broader behavior change and ask a veterinarian if you are concerned.

Cats Protection advises that “Cats shouldn’t be disturbed when sleeping.” Even if a resting cat appears partly alert, let it sleep rather than testing whether it will react like a guard animal.
