Lower-Methane Sheep Explained: 10 Surprising Facts About Breeding, Feed and Measurement

Lower-methane sheep are possible, but results depend on the metric, diet, breed, grazing system and measurement method. These 10 facts explain what the evidence does—and does not—show.

Yes, sheep can be selected for lower methane emissions, but “lower methane” is not one universal trait. Sheep make enteric methane as rumen microbes digest feed. Breeding, forage, diet and management can change the result, while a measurement such as methane per day is not interchangeable with methane per kilogram of feed. The most defensible findings are specific to a flock, diet, age, measurement method and production system—not a guarantee for every pasture.

Here are 10 evidence-based facts, followed by a practical guide to how the measurements and breeding decisions work.

What “lower-methane sheep” actually means

Enteric methane is produced in the rumen and released mainly by belching. Scientists may seek a reduction per animal, per unit of feed, per kilogram of live weight or per kilogram of meat or wool. Those are different denominators, so two studies can report different percentages without contradicting each other.

Metric What it measures Why the denominator matters
Methane production Usually grams of CH4 per day A larger animal can emit more per day while producing more saleable output.
Methane yield Methane relative to dry-matter intake, often grams per kilogram of feed eaten A lower yield means less methane for the measured amount of feed; it does not automatically mean lower daily emissions.
Methane intensity Methane relative to product or body weight The result depends on growth, fertility, mature size and the chosen product denominator.
CH4/(CH4 + CO2) Methane as a share of the two gases measured in a particular protocol It is a ratio, not a direct percentage reduction in whole-animal methane output.

Ten facts that change how to interpret “low-methane sheep”

1. The methane is a digestion product, not a breed label

Rumen microbes use hydrogen generated while fermenting forage and other feed. Methanogenic microbes convert that hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane, which the sheep exhales. Every flock’s result reflects the interaction of animal genetics with diet, forage maturity, intake, climate and management. “Lower-methane sheep” therefore describes an animal measured under a defined set of conditions, not a permanent label that overrides its environment.

2. Sheep can be selected for the trait because animals vary genetically

Traits linked to methane emissions show genetic variation in several studied populations. That makes selection possible in principle: breeders can record methane-related phenotypes, estimate breeding values and favor rams and ewes whose inherited traits fit the breeding goal. The NSW Low Methane Sheep project describes the intended benefit this way: “The effects of selective for lower methane producing sheep will be permanent and cumulative, while continuing to boost production efficiency and product quality.” The wording describes an anticipated project benefit, not an independent evaluation of a completed national outcome. The project timeline runs to 2026 and includes plans to measure sheep and develop breeding values, so planned outputs should not be presented as finished results.

3. A strong genetic correlation is not a promised percentage cut

In a 2017 Merino study, methane and feed-intake traits were measured after weaning, as hoggets and as adults while the sheep ate a high-energy grower pellet. Genetic correlations between selection to decrease feed intake or residual feed intake and methane were reported in the range 0.76–0.90. A genetic correlation describes how inherited differences in two traits move together in that population and analysis. It is not a prediction that methane will fall by 76–90%, nor proof that the relationship will be identical on a low-quality pasture or in another breed.

4. Heritability estimates belong to the flock and protocol that produced them

Johnson and colleagues’ 2022 Frontiers in Genetics study assessed 986 New Zealand maternal-type ewe lambs for feed intake and related measures. Gas data were available for 968, and 591 had body-composition measurements. The reported heritability estimates were 0.42 ± 0.09 for residual feed intake, 0.32 ± 0.08 for methane and 0.29 ± 0.06 for methane divided by methane plus carbon dioxide. Heritability is the proportion of observed variation attributed to inherited differences in that dataset; it is not a constant for all sheep.

5. Feed efficiency and methane overlap, but they are not synonyms

Residual feed intake (RFI) compares what an animal eats with the intake predicted for its measured growth, maintenance and other biological outcomes. Under the study’s definition, a lower RFI generally indicates greater feed efficiency. An efficient sheep may eat less and therefore emit less total methane, yet methane yield can behave differently if intake, diet digestibility or production changes. The New Zealand study described the relationship as complex and reported a genetic correlation of −0.41 ± 0.15 between RFI and methane share, defined as CH4/(CH4 + CO2). The negative sign applies to those precise trait definitions; it should not be converted into a simple “41% reduction” rule.

6. A grazing result can differ for methane yield and daily methane

A 2017 Journal of Animal Science pasture study compared sheep from low- and high-methane-yield selection lines. In one grazing experiment, progeny from the low-yield line had 15% lower methane yield. In the other experiment, the lines did not differ in total daily methane production. Yield and daily production use different denominators, and pasture intake and composition can vary rapidly. Reporting the 15% figure without naming the metric and experiment would overstate what the study found.

7. Breed and forage quality can move emissions in opposite directions

The NMBU GrassToGas project reports that breed and forage quality affected emissions in its experiments. In the work described there, Old Norwegian Spæl sheep had lower emissions per kilogram of body weight than Norwegian White Sheep. That is a comparison within the project’s conditions, not a ranking of every sheep breed worldwide. Body size, climate, diet, growth rate and whether the denominator is body weight, feed or product can all change the ordering.

8. Portable chambers measure an animal under a test window, not a whole farm

SRUC describes portable accumulation chambers that can be taken to sheep after their usual diet, including grazing. The chamber captures gases over a defined period so technicians can estimate emissions consistently across animals. Its GreenSheep project describes measuring 13,500 maternal-type sheep in 30 UK flocks. Such measurements are valuable for genetic evaluation, but they remain samples from particular animals and conditions; they do not by themselves equal a flock’s annual greenhouse-gas footprint.

9. Feed additives can work in pens yet deliver less on pasture

Australia’s 2026 MERiL results summary reports trial-specific sheep reductions of up to 88% for bromoform derived from Asparagopsis or synthetic bromoform in pen trials, about 20% for 3-NOP and 37% for brassica fodder. These are maxima or reported trial results, not universal farm performance. The agency cautions that dose and feeding frequency matter and that reductions may be lower when sheep graze and cannot be offered a precisely controlled ration. A treatment also has to be assessed for persistence, intake, animal health, product quality, cost and practicality before adoption.

10. Projected annual gains are scenarios, not observed guarantees

GrassToGas presents 1–3% annual reductions as a potential impact if project results are applied in breeding programmes. That is a project estimate, not an observed annual outcome for all flocks. Small annual genetic changes can accumulate, but only if the measured trait is repeatable, breeding values are accurate, enough replacements are selected and productivity, body condition, fertility and welfare remain acceptable.

How methane studies are designed

A credible comparison starts by defining the trait and the population. Researchers record animal identity, age, sex, body weight, feed intake, diet composition and production outcomes. They then collect gas measurements repeatedly or over a standardized period, adjust for relevant covariates and estimate genetic parameters. The procedure matters because methane can change with feed quality, intake level, weather and stage of production.

  1. Choose the denominator. Decide whether the breeding or feeding goal is grams per day, methane yield, methane intensity or a gas ratio.
  2. Standardize the test. Keep diet, adaptation period, measurement duration and time of day sufficiently consistent to separate animal differences from short-term noise.
  3. Measure companion traits. Record dry-matter intake, growth, body condition, wool or meat output, fertility and health so a methane reduction is not purchased by sacrificing performance.
  4. Estimate repeatability and heritability. Repeated records and pedigree or genomic information help distinguish inherited differences from temporary environmental effects.
  5. Validate in the target system. A pellet-based result should be checked on the forage and grazing pattern where the breeding value will be used.

What breeding for lower methane could look like

Breeding programmes can add a methane-related estimated breeding value to an existing index rather than selecting on methane alone. The index can assign economic and environmental weights to methane, growth, lamb survival, fertility, wool or meat yield and health. This prevents a single gas measurement from pushing the flock toward smaller, slower-growing or less robust animals simply because they eat less.

Selection also requires enough records across sires, dams, seasons and management systems. A value estimated from one diet may have limited accuracy when the progeny are run elsewhere. Genomic information can increase accuracy earlier in life, but it does not remove the need for representative phenotypes and ongoing validation.

What feed and forage approaches can—and cannot—tell you

Improving forage quality can alter intake, digestibility and the amount of methane produced per unit of feed. Additives such as bromoform-derived treatments or 3-NOP target rumen processes more directly, while brassica forage changes the diet itself. The MERiL figures show why the headline percentage is only the first screening question: ask about dose, delivery frequency, trial length, animal class, feed intake, adaptation and whether sheep were penned or grazing.

On pasture, every animal may not consume the same dose, weather can change forage chemistry and a supplement may be difficult to deliver daily. A treatment that lowers methane in a controlled pen can therefore produce a smaller or more variable result in a commercial flock. Feed safety, residues, palatability, labor and cost also belong in the decision, even when the emissions effect is promising.

How to judge a “low-methane sheep” claim

  • Ask which metric changed: daily methane, methane yield, methane intensity or a ratio.
  • Check the conditions: breed, age, diet, forage quality, climate, housing and measurement method.
  • Separate genetic from temporary effects: one season’s chamber value is not automatically an inherited breeding difference.
  • Look for production safeguards: growth, fertility, body condition, lamb survival, wool or meat quality and welfare.
  • Demand replication: a result from one flock or trial should be tested in the system where it will be used.
  • Treat large percentages cautiously: identify whether the number is a controlled-trial maximum, a one-time comparison or a multi-year field result.

The practical bottom line

Lower-methane sheep are a credible breeding and management goal, not a single finished breed or guaranteed feed product. Genetic variation means selection can contribute lasting reductions, while diet and additives may produce larger short-term changes under controlled conditions. The responsible interpretation always states the methane metric, the testing environment and the trade-offs with productivity, animal condition and welfare before claiming that a result will transfer to every grazing flock.
