PerthNow reported on 21 March 2025 that the State Administrative Tribunal suspended Cottesloe veterinarian Lu Fenny for six months and ordered her to pay $10,000 after a complaint about a dog’s dental treatment. The report said the suspension was scheduled to begin on 15 April 2025. It described the tribunal’s professional-misconduct finding as involving the use of methylated spirits during treatment as well as other conduct. The suspension was reported as due to start on 15 April 2025. The report does not establish Fenny’s professional or practice status after that date.

Why was the Cottesloe vet suspended?
The complaint arose from dental treatment in May 2024. According to PerthNow, Fenny sedated a cavoodle and used methylated spirits to clean both dental instruments and the dog’s mouth.

PerthNow reported that Fenny replied by text that the symptoms were “normal” and advised, “Keep up the milk.” The report also reproduced a message attributed to Fenny saying: “Hi Cass it’s standard practice in dentals to use this and I’ve had no issues in the 20 years I’ve been doing dentals,” followed by, “His gums are a little sore/irritated which is normal. Keep up the milk.” The original messages were not independently examined for this account.

PerthNow said the dog was taken the following day to The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University, where it was diagnosed with oral ulcers, a lesion in the oesophagus and an increased temperature. Those are diagnoses reported by the news outlet; the account does not independently establish the medical cause of the dog’s condition.
What other conduct did PerthNow report?
The report said the tribunal also found that the Cottesloe facility was not registered as veterinary premises, although at least 29 animals had been treated there on multiple occasions. It further reported that Fenny initially denied using methylated spirits in her response to a board investigation and altered appointment records.
