Secure the aquarium against reaching, lifting, and tipping
Fit and secure the lid
Choose a lid made for the exact aquarium and secure it so a cat cannot readily lift it. Check for openings large enough for a paw to enter, while preserving the aquarium’s needed ventilation and access for equipment and maintenance. Clips or clasps are examples of ways to hold a cover in place, not a universally certified solution. Verify that the lid and any fasteners suit your tank.

Set the tank on a sturdy, level surface, away from edges and places a cat can easily use as a launch point. A secure cover will not prevent a tank from being knocked or destabilized. Manage wires and access
Route and secure nearby wires so they are not easy to pull or trip over. Cable clips may help organize wiring, but they do not replace safe electrical setup or a stable tank. If your cat persistently watches or paws at the aquarium, restrict access to the room or screen the tank from view where practical. These are reasonable management steps; available guidance does not quantify how much simply seeing a tank affects fish.
Use enrichment as a supplement, not a barrier
Offer the cat play, toys, scratching opportunities, and other suitable enrichment away from the aquarium. Interactive play may redirect attention, but it cannot ensure the cat will stop approaching the tank. Do not punish the cat or assume training will reliably erase interest in fish. Keep fish healthy and know when to seek help
Cat-proofing does not replace routine fish care. Cycle the aquarium before adding fish, maintain water quality through cleaning, water changes, and parameter testing, and house compatible fish together, following guidance appropriate to the species. Singapore AVS lists possible warning signs including loss of appetite, difficulty staying afloat, sideways swimming, rubbing against the tank, white spots, unusual growths, abnormal fins, raised scales, or isolation from a group. These signs do not establish that a cat caused a problem; seek advice from a veterinary professional experienced with fish if they appear.

Handle aquarium water and equipment hygienically
The CDC’s U.S. public-health advice, dated April 15, 2024, says: “The best way to prevent illness from fish and their environment is to wash your hands often.” Aquarium water, equipment, and tank items can carry germs. Wash with soap and running water after feeding fish, handling tank water or equipment, and cleaning the aquarium. The CDC recommends gloves for aquarium cleaning or care, especially if you have cuts or wounds.
