The giant predator in this headline was Machimosaurus rex, an extinct marine crocodyliform known from fossils discovered in Tunisia. It was not a modern crocodile, and its reputation rests on fossil-based estimates and interpretations rather than observations of its behavior.
What was Machimosaurus rex?
Machimosaurus rex was an extinct marine crocodyliform that lived roughly 130 million years ago. Researchers named it from fossils found in what is now Tunisia, in a region near the Sahara. Although headlines often call it an ancient crocodile, that wording needs qualification: M. rex was not a living crocodile species and should not be placed casually alongside modern crocodilians as if they were the same animal.

The name appeared in coverage of a fossil discovery that pushed the known history of its broader group later than previously thought. Before this find, an extinction date of about 150 million years ago had been proposed for that group. The Tunisian fossils indicated that at least one member survived to about 130 million years ago, challenging that earlier account. That discovery changes the timeline; it does not, by itself, explain why M. rex or its relatives eventually disappeared.
How large was the giant marine predator?
The most widely reported reconstruction made M. rex more than 30 feet long, with a mass of around three tons. Its skull alone exceeded five feet in length. These figures are estimates derived from incomplete fossil evidence, not measurements taken from a complete, intact animal.

| Feature | Reported estimate or measurement | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | More than 30 feet | Fossil-based reconstruction estimate |
| Body mass | About three tons | Estimated weight, not a directly weighed specimen |
| Skull length | More than five feet | Reported measurement of the fossil skull |
Lead author Federico Fanti summarized the scale by saying, “It’s just big. It’s almost the size of a bus.” That comparison communicates the animal’s imposing dimensions, but it is not a formal measurement or a claim that every reconstructed individual reached exactly the same size.
Where did it live?
The fossils came from a site near the Sahara in modern Tunisia. Researchers interpreted the ancient environment as a lagoon that opened toward the ocean. Fish and turtle remains were reported at the same locality, providing a picture of a productive coastal setting rather than an inland freshwater pond.
A lagoon connected to the sea would have offered several zones in which a large marine crocodyliform could move: shallow margins, channels and open water beyond the lagoon. The fossils establish the setting’s broad character, but they do not show how much time an individual animal spent in each zone or whether it routinely traveled far offshore.

What did Machimosaurus rex eat?
The available evidence supports a powerful predator, but it does not provide a menu listing every prey species. Fanti said the animal was “absolutely capable” of hunting in the water and could have been an ambush predator or a scavenger. Those are behavioral interpretations from anatomy and the fossil setting, not direct observations.

Turtles as plausible prey
Turtles were proposed as plausible prey because turtle remains occurred at the site and the animal was inferred to have a strong bite. That makes turtles a reasonable ecological possibility, not proof that turtles made up most of its diet. The phrase “crushed everything in its path” is therefore headline language, not a measured finding that the species consumed every animal around it.
Ambush hunting and scavenging
An ambush strategy would mean waiting for prey to approach and then striking at close range. Scavenging would involve feeding on animals that were already dead or weakened. The evidence reviewed for this discovery does not determine how often either behavior occurred, whether one was dominant, or how the animal divided its time between them.
Was it at the top of its food chain?
Fanti said it “definitely was at the top of the food chain at the time, at least in this particular locality.” The qualification matters. The statement applies to the fossil locality represented by the Tunisian site, not automatically to every marine ecosystem in which the species might have lived. A top predator can still share an environment with other large hunters, compete for prey and sometimes scavenge rather than make a kill.
There is also no verified bite-force number in the available reporting. Its inferred ability to handle hard-shelled prey and its large skull indicate substantial feeding power, but a numerical force value would require a separate biomechanical study and should not be supplied as if it had been measured for this specimen.

What does the “before great whites” comparison really mean?
The great-white reference is a dramatic hook, not evidence of a documented contest between M. rex and great white sharks. The available accounts do not establish that the two animals were direct ecological competitors, nor do they provide a measured, like-for-like comparison of their lengths or weights.
For a reader, the useful comparison is scale and lifestyle: M. rex was a several-ton marine crocodyliform reconstructed at more than 30 feet, while the great-white wording belongs to the headline’s framing. It should not be read as proof that M. rex defeated sharks, ruled every ocean or occupied a single uninterrupted food-chain hierarchy.
How certain are the size and behavior claims?
All reconstructions of an extinct animal begin with fossils rather than a living body that can be measured, weighed or observed. That distinction is especially important for this discovery because the reported full-body dimensions are estimates. The skull measurement is more direct, while the length and mass depend on reconstructing proportions from preserved remains.

| Question | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Was the animal more than 30 feet long? | Researchers’ reconstruction was reported as exceeding 30 feet; this is an estimate. |
| Did it weigh about three tons? | About three tons was reported as an estimated mass. |
| Was its skull longer than five feet? | Yes, the reported skull measurement exceeded five feet. |
| Did it hunt in water? | Fanti considered it absolutely capable of doing so; this is an inference. |
| Did it ambush prey or scavenge? | Both were proposed as possible behaviors; the fossils do not select one with certainty. |
| Did it eat turtles? | Turtles were suggested as plausible prey because turtle remains were found locally and a strong bite was inferred. |
What was found at the fossil site?
The locality contained remains of M. rex along with fish and turtles. Those associated fossils matter because they help researchers reconstruct the animal’s setting and possible food web. They do not prove that every animal represented at the site interacted directly with the crocodyliform. Fossils can accumulate over different times and through different transport or deposition processes, so an association is evidence for a shared environment, not a snapshot of a single feeding event.

How did the discovery change the extinction timeline?
Reports placed M. rex at approximately 130 million years ago. That age is later than the roughly 150-million-year date previously proposed for the extinction of its broader group. In that sense, the fossil challenged a simple account in which the group had already vanished by 150 million years ago.
The discovery does not establish the species’ final extinction cause. The available sources do not identify a confirmed event, climate shift, predator or ecological change that can be assigned as the reason M. rex disappeared. A later survival date and an eventual extinction explanation are separate questions.
Why the animal is often called a crocodile anyway
“Crocodile” is familiar shorthand for a crocodile-like reptile, which helps explain its use in popular headlines. Scientifically, however, M. rex is described as a marine crocodyliform. Keeping that distinction preserves two facts at once: the animal belonged to the larger crocodile-line group, and it was not one of the living crocodile species people see today.
The marine label also prevents a misleading image of a modern river crocodile simply scaled up. The fossils indicate an animal associated with a coastal lagoon facing the ocean, and the reconstructed size is far beyond what a reader should assume from familiar living crocodilians.

What the headline gets right—and what it exaggerates
Supported by the fossils and reporting
- Machimosaurus rex was a giant extinct marine crocodyliform from what is now Tunisia.
- Researchers’ estimates put it at more than 30 feet long and about three tons, with a skull longer than five feet.
- It lived in a lagoon environment connected to the ocean, alongside fish and turtles.
- It was likely capable of hunting in water, and turtles were considered plausible prey.
- Its presence at about 130 million years ago challenged an earlier extinction date for its broader group.
Not established by the available evidence
- That it literally crushed or ate everything in its path.
- A precise bite-force measurement.
- A confirmed hunting method used on every occasion.
- A direct ecological rivalry or physical contest with great white sharks.
- The cause of its eventual extinction.
How to picture Machimosaurus rex accurately
Imagine a marine reptile built on a crocodile-line body plan moving through a coastal lagoon, with a skull longer than five feet and a reconstructed total length beyond 30 feet. It was large enough to rank as a dominant predator in the locality represented by the fossils. Yet the most responsible reconstruction leaves room for uncertainty: its total dimensions are estimates, its feeding behavior is inferred and its final disappearance remains unexplained by the evidence described in the discovery reports.
That combination is what makes the fossil important. M. rex was not merely a sensationally large “crocodile”; it extended the known record of its group and showed that giant marine crocodyliforms persisted later than some earlier timelines allowed.
Sources and reporting context
The headline’s framing appeared in secondary coverage from A-Z Animals. A January 12, 2016 report by Elahe Izadi in The Washington Post quoted lead author Federico Fanti and supplied the reported estimates, lagoon interpretation, feeding possibilities and extinction-timeline context. The underlying paper was linked by that report in Cretaceous Research; the details summarized here remain qualified as reported estimates and interpretations rather than newly calculated measurements.
