Maine’s best-known animal symbols span five different legal categories: the moose is the state animal; the chickadee is the state bird; the Maine coon cat is the state cat; the Maine lobster (Homarus americanus) is the state crustacean; and the Seppala Siberian Sleddog is the state dog. Maine also recognizes a state amphibian and a state reptile, so these five are a focused list of familiar designations rather than every animal symbol in state law.
The categories matter. Maine statutes do not describe all five as one group of “state animals.” They assign each symbol a specific designation in Title 1, Chapter 9. That distinction explains why a short list may say “five official state animals” while the legal record contains additional animal-related symbols.

The five designations at a glance
| Symbol | Official designation | Scientific name in the statute | What the law says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moose | State animal | Not stated | “The state animal shall be the moose.” |
| Chickadee | State bird | Not stated | “The state bird shall be the chickadee.” |
| Maine coon cat | State cat | Not stated | The Maine coon cat is identified as the state cat. |
| Maine lobster | State crustacean | Homarus americanus | “The Maine lobster (Homarus americanus) is the official state crustacean.” |
| Seppala Siberian Sleddog | State dog | Not stated | “The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is the official state dog.” |
This table uses the legal categories rather than ranking the animals. A moose, a chickadee, a domestic cat, a lobster and a sleddog are not competing choices; each represents a different part of Maine’s official-symbol system.
1. Moose: Maine’s state animal
Maine law gives the moose the unqualified title of state animal. Title 1, section 215 states: “The state animal shall be the moose.” Because the statute names only “moose” in this section, that is the safest official wording; it does not assign a particular subspecies or attach a population estimate.

The moose is a wild member of Maine’s landscape, not a domestic animal that can be treated like a pet. Its size, strength and unpredictable behavior make distance and respect essential whenever one is seen near a road, trail or home. The designation is symbolic and cultural; it does not create a separate legal protection for every moose beyond the wildlife laws that otherwise apply.
Why the moose appears on Maine’s imagery
Maine’s Great Seal depicts a moose resting beneath a pine tree. That image helps explain why the animal is so closely associated with the state, but the seal is not a second or “sixth” animal designation. The moose’s appearance on the seal and its status under section 215 are two related pieces of Maine symbolism.
How to describe it accurately
- Call it Maine’s state animal, not the state bird or state mammal unless a source specifically uses that term.
- Do not attach a numerical population claim to the designation; the official wording provides none.
- When writing about an encounter, treat a moose as wild wildlife rather than a large pet.
2. Chickadee: the state bird
Title 1, section 209 says, “The state bird shall be the chickadee.” The section does not specify a species. For that reason, “chickadee” is the precise statutory answer, while adding “black-capped” as if the law itself made that identification would go beyond the wording of this designation.
Chickadees are familiar small songbirds that visit woods, yards and feeders across the state. Their visibility makes the symbol easy for children and visitors to recognize, but the legal point is broader: Maine selected the chickadee name without narrowing it to one species in the cited section.
What the designation does not mean
Being the state bird does not turn every chickadee into a protected individual or change ordinary wildlife rules. It is an official symbol, not a private ownership right. If you feed birds, use clean equipment and follow ordinary wildlife-care practices; never attempt to capture a wild chickadee as a pet.

Avoiding the common wording error
Many informal lists identify a black-capped chickadee. That may be a familiar identification in general bird writing, but Maine’s state-bird statute simply says “the chickadee.” An article that is explaining the law should preserve that distinction rather than present an unstated species as statutory language.
3. Maine coon cat: the state cat
Maine’s official cat is the Maine coon cat. The designation appears in the same state-symbol chapter that identifies the moose. Unlike the moose and lobster, this symbol is a domestic breed, so readers may encounter it in homes, shelters and breed communities rather than only in the wild.

The designation recognizes the breed as a state symbol without making every individual cat an official animal or imposing a special legal status on owners.
State symbol versus household pet
A Maine coon cat remains subject to the same responsible-pet obligations as any other companion animal: appropriate veterinary care, safe housing, identification and humane treatment. The state title is commemorative. It does not establish a state-run breed registry, guarantee a cat’s pedigree or replace local animal-control rules.
How it fits the five-part list
The Maine coon cat is why the phrase “five state animals” can be confusing. It occupies the separate legal category of state cat. Counting categories rather than trying to force every symbol into “animal” keeps the list faithful to Maine’s statutory structure.

4. Maine lobster: the state crustacean
Maine law is unusually specific about its crustacean symbol. Title 1, section 229 states: “The Maine lobster (Homarus americanus) is the official state crustacean.” The scientific name is part of the statutory wording, so it can be included when precision matters.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The lobster is both a marine animal and a major part of Maine’s coastal identity. In this context, however, “state crustacean” is a designation of symbolism, not a statement that every lobster has special protection or that the designation replaces fisheries regulations. Harvest, handling and commerce remain governed by the applicable wildlife and marine-resource rules.
Why the scientific name matters
Common names can vary by region. Including Homarus americanus identifies the species intended by the statute and separates the Maine lobster from unrelated lobster species. The law does not provide a population figure in this designation, so none should be inferred from the title.
Wildlife symbol, not a household pet
A lobster is not an ordinary companion animal. Keeping or handling one outside lawful, humane and appropriate conditions can harm the animal and may conflict with resource rules. For a state-symbol article, the useful takeaway is the legal category and species identity, not a recommendation to keep lobsters at home.
5. Seppala Siberian Sleddog: Maine’s state dog
The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is Maine’s official state dog. The current chapter text states: “The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is the official state dog.” This provision was enacted in 2025 and appears as section 234 after the chapter’s statutory reallocation.

The name points to a sleddog tradition rather than a generic reference to Siberian-type dogs. It should be written exactly as the statute does: Seppala Siberian Sleddog. The designation does not mean that every Siberian sleddog, northern-breed mix or working dog automatically qualifies as the state dog.
What the 2025 addition changes
Older lists of Maine symbols may omit the state dog because they predate the 2025 enactment. A current explanation should include it and identify the date so readers can understand why newer references contain a fifth category that older classroom lists may not show.
State dog does not equal a legal breed guarantee
The title is an official symbol, not a certificate of ancestry. It does not create a statewide licensing system, establish a required working test or grant special privileges to owners. Anyone considering a dog should evaluate temperament, exercise needs, housing and training independently of the state designation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some sources say “five” while Maine has more animal symbols
“Five official state animals” is useful shorthand for the five familiar categories above, but it is not an exhaustive count of animal-related designations in Maine law. The same chapter also identifies the spring peeper as the state amphibian and the wood turtle as the state reptile.
That means a complete count depends on what is being counted. If the question is asking for the five commonly grouped symbols—animal, bird, cat, crustacean and dog—the answer is the moose, chickadee, Maine coon cat, Maine lobster and Seppala Siberian Sleddog. If it asks for every official animal-related category, the spring peeper and wood turtle must be added.

| Counting approach | Included symbols | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Five-category shorthand | Moose, chickadee, Maine coon cat, Maine lobster and Seppala Siberian Sleddog | Five designations |
| All animal-related categories identified in the chapter | The five above plus spring peeper and wood turtle | Seven designations |
The difference is classification, not a contradiction. Maine has not assigned one universal label to all of these symbols; it has created separate categories.
Do these designations provide special legal protection?
No. A state-symbol designation is an official recognition, not an automatic enhancement of environmental protection. The title does not by itself change hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife rehabilitation, animal-control or pet-ownership rules. Those questions must be answered from the relevant Maine laws and regulations for the species and activity involved.
This is especially important for the moose, chickadee and lobster, which are wild animals, and for anyone who assumes that a state title creates permission to possess or handle them. Symbolic status and regulatory status are separate issues.
How to use the list for school, travel or family learning
For a classroom or quiz
Match each name to its category: moose–animal, chickadee–bird, Maine coon cat–cat, Maine lobster–crustacean and Seppala Siberian Sleddog–dog. If a worksheet asks for every animal symbol, add spring peeper and wood turtle as amphibian and reptile.
For a wildlife outing
Use the list as a starting point for observation, not as a collection checklist. Watch wild animals from a safe distance, avoid feeding or touching them and leave habitats undisturbed. A field guide can help identify species beyond the official symbols.
