The Maltese is a very small, affectionate companion dog with a long, silky white coat. It can suit apartment or small-home life and does not need strenuous exercise, but it does need regular company, gentle handling, consistent coat maintenance, and attention to dental health.

Published size and lifespan estimates vary by source and are not guarantees for an individual dog. A Maltese is a better fit for people prepared to provide daily interaction, training, and grooming than for households expecting a dog that can be left alone all day or needs little care.

VCA’s veterinary breed overview gives a height of 7–9 inches and weight under 7 pounds. Those figures differ in purpose from the show standard’s preferred weight; they should not be treated as a promise of an individual dog’s adult size or as a universal health target. Terms such as “teacup” and “micro” do not describe a separate officially recognized variety and should prompt caution rather than confidence.

Temperament

Maltese are typically affectionate, bright, playful, and strongly bonded to their people. Many want to participate in ordinary household activities rather than spend the day isolated. They can be adaptable indoors and moderately active, but may also be vocal or have limited tolerance for being left alone for long periods. These are breed tendencies, not guarantees for every dog.

Without training, a Maltese may bark at visitors, hallway sounds, other dogs, or movement outside a window. Reward quiet behavior, teach a reliable “leave it” or “settle” cue, and manage triggers with distance or window coverings. Shouting at barking may increase excitement rather than teach the dog what to do instead.

Early, positive socialization matters. Introduce puppies gradually to people, calm dogs, household noises, surfaces, car travel, grooming equipment, and gentle handling. Keep experiences short and positive. A small dog should not be forced into interactions with larger dogs or rough children.

Are Maltese good with children?

A Maltese can live successfully with respectful older children, but the breed is a poor match for unsupervised rough play. Its small size makes rough handling risky. Children should learn to sit on the floor for handling, leave the dog alone while it eats or sleeps, and avoid carrying it without an adult’s help.

Families with toddlers may prefer a sturdier breed. If a Maltese lives with young children, use barriers, active supervision, and a quiet retreat the dog can enter without being followed.

Exercise and mental stimulation

Maltese are moderately active and generally do not need strenuous exercise. Short walks, indoor play, and mental engagement can meet many dogs’ needs. Walks provide stimulation beyond bathroom breaks, while food puzzles and simple scent games offer ways to engage the mind.

Do not assume that carrying a Maltese everywhere meets its needs. At the same time, tailor activity to the individual dog’s age and health. Ask a veterinarian about appropriate activity if a dog has poor stamina, unusual breathing, or another health concern.

Training and housetraining

Maltese can learn well with reward-based training using food or games. Keep sessions short and consistent, and teach basic skills such as:

  1. Responding to its name and coming when called indoors
  2. Walking calmly on a harness
  3. Sitting, waiting briefly, and going to a bed or mat
  4. Accepting gentle touch around the feet, ears, mouth, and tail
  5. Settling quietly after play

Housetraining can take patience because a small dog may need frequent opportunities. Take a puppy outside after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and napping, then reward elimination immediately. Keep a predictable schedule and supervise closely indoors. If you use an indoor toilet area, establish it deliberately rather than allowing random accidents in different rooms.

Never punish a Maltese for an accident discovered after the fact. Clean the area with an enzymatic product and adjust the schedule. Sudden house-soiling in an adult dog warrants a veterinary check because medical problems can be involved.

Alone time and separation problems

Maltese are companion-oriented, and some have limited tolerance for being left alone for long periods. Warning signs of separation-related distress can include persistent barking, pacing, destruction near exits, drooling, escape attempts, or accidents that happen only when the owner leaves.

Teach independence gradually. Give the dog a comfortable rest area, reward calm behavior at a distance, and practice very short absences first. Increase duration only while the dog remains relaxed. Food toys may help, but they will not solve severe anxiety by themselves. Do not punish behavior caused by panic; consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional if the dog cannot tolerate short absences.

Grooming a Maltese

The Maltese’s long, silky single coat is a defining feature and needs frequent attention. VCA recommends daily brushing to help prevent matting; its breed-care profile recommends combing every day or two. Owners can choose a long coat or a shorter clipped style, often with professional grooming, based on the look and maintenance they can manage.

For a long-coated Maltese, brush and comb down to the skin regularly. A short pet trim reduces the amount of coat to manage but does not eliminate brushing. Use a small slicker brush gently, followed by a metal comb to check for tangles. Pulling through mats can hurt; severe matting may need professional attention. A March 2024 AKC Gazette column attributes advice to Daryl Martin of the American Maltese Association that daily brushing keeps a properly maintained coat in condition and that bathing every week or two is healthy. Treat that as breed-club representative guidance, not a veterinary standard; ask your groomer or veterinarian to tailor a routine to your dog.

VCA advises keeping hair out of the eyes, checking hygiene around the anus daily, cleaning the eye area regularly, and providing frequent dental care. The American Maltese Association recommends daily tooth brushing and regular cleanings. Make routine care positive and gradual:

  • Eyes: Keep hair out of the eyes and clean the area regularly. Persistent discharge, squinting, redness, or cloudiness needs veterinary attention.
  • Ears: Check for odor, redness, excess wax, head shaking, or scratching. Do not insert cotton swabs deep into the ear canal.
  • Nails: Trim as needed; ask a groomer or veterinarian to show you how if you are unsure.
  • Teeth: Brush daily with dog toothpaste if possible, and discuss regular cleanings with your veterinarian. Dental disease is an important care consideration.
  • Skin and coat: Keep the dog dry after bathing and check for irritation hidden under the hair.

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Maltese may shed relatively little, but allergens are also associated with dander, saliva, and skin secretions. Anyone with allergies should spend time with adult Maltese dogs before bringing one home.

Health concerns

VCA lists the following as possible Maltese health considerations. They are topics to discuss with a veterinarian, not a forecast for every dog; the sources do not establish prevalence rates.

  • Dental disease: VCA flags periodontal problems, and the American Maltese Association emphasizes daily brushing and regular cleanings.
  • Patellar luxation: The kneecap can slip out of position. Discuss signs such as intermittent skipping or lameness with a veterinarian.
  • Portosystemic shunt or microvascular dysplasia: These liver-related conditions are among the concerns listed by VCA. The breed club recommends bile-acid testing, particularly for puppies; a veterinarian should interpret results.
  • Patent ductus arteriosus: A congenital heart condition included in VCA’s list of possible concerns.
  • Hypoglycemia in puppies: Weakness, tremors, or unusual sleepiness in a puppy needs prompt veterinary advice.
  • Tracheal collapse: A persistent cough, noisy breathing, fainting, or exercise intolerance should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
  • Cataracts and glaucoma: These eye conditions are among the possible concerns listed by VCA. Eye changes warrant veterinary assessment.

The American Maltese Association says the breed participates in CHIC and names patella and congenital-heart evaluations as its requirements. It recommends bile-acid testing, particularly for puppies, as an indicator for liver health. Ask a breeder for the parents’ documented health-evaluation results and an explanation of them, and ask the puppy’s veterinarian which checks fit the individual puppy’s history. These screenings are considerations, not guarantees that a dog will or will not develop a condition.

Arrange routine veterinary examinations, maintain a healthy body condition, and seek prompt care for breathing difficulty, collapse, severe lethargy, repeated vomiting, sudden weakness, or persistent pain.

Choosing a responsible breeder

Visit where the puppies are raised, meet the mother, and ask to see the father or credible information about him. The dogs should appear healthy and comfortable around the breeder, and the breeder should ask you about your home and plans rather than treating the sale as a quick transaction.

Chris Christensen Big G Dog Slicker Brush for Dogs (Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Poodles), Groom Like a Professional, Fluff Detangle Style, Saves Time Energy, Coral, Large
  • ‘THE’ DOG BRUSH – you’ve found it! It’s THAT dog brush for shedding breeds. It’s THAT dog brush for detangling. It’s THAT brush groomers love and recommend. Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush is the original doodle brush for deshedding, detangling, and creating a finished look. Fluff, detangle, and style with one professional tool. Available in a coral color and three sizes to fit the requirements of a professional groomer and show exhibitor.
  • DESHEDDING BRUSH – removes trapped undercoat with less strokes. The extra-long angled pins effectively reach down into the coat removing dead and loose undercoat. The hair remains trapped inside the brush until removed. Perfect for double-coated breeds, especially during the shedding season. Get maximum results, with less work when using the Big G Slicker. It is your workhorse.
  • DETANGLING BRUSH – this slicker brush is ideal for removing fine knots from long-coated breeds and the tiny mats hidden in tight curly-coated breeds. With 30% more pins than other slickers, the Big G slicker works 30% harder for you. Brushing with this slicker brush is easier, faster and will make your job grooming painless.
  • POODLE BRUSH – the long, dense pins are perfect for fluffing curly, cottony coats and fluffing and shaping heads, toplines, and legs. Ideal for Poodles, Bichons, Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, and other Doodle breeds.
  • THOUGHT-OUT DESIGN – every pin is angled for gentle brushing and sits within a flexible cushioned pad allowing the pins to flex softly and glide through the coat. The unique handle design with a non-slip grip reduces hand and arm fatigue and the extreme curved back allows additional control, movement, and direction when brushing. Brushing multiple dogs has never been easier.

Ask what health evaluations the parents have had, request the results, and ask the breeder to explain them. The American Maltese Association names patella and congenital-heart evaluations as CHIC requirements and recommends bile-acid testing, particularly for puppies. A general DNA panel is not a substitute for discussing the relevant evaluations and veterinary records.

Be cautious of sellers promising a guaranteed adult weight, “teacup” status, or a dog guaranteed not to bark or trigger allergies. Puppies should go home with appropriate records, a written contract, and a plan for veterinary care. Rescue organizations and shelters may also have Maltese or Maltese mixes for adoption.

Feeding and weight control

Feed a complete, balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s age, size, and medical needs. Follow the food label as a starting point, then adjust according to body condition and veterinary advice. A Maltese should have a visible waist from above and ribs that can be felt under a light covering of fat.

Measure meals rather than leaving food available all day, particularly for an adult that gains weight easily. Treats, dental chews, and table scraps count toward daily calories. Sudden dietary changes can cause stomach upset. Puppies, especially unusually small puppies, need a feeding plan suited to their age and size; discuss skipped meals, weakness, or poor appetite with a veterinarian promptly.

Who should get a Maltese?

A Maltese may suit someone who wants a small, interactive companion and can commit to regular coat care, dental care, training, and social contact. It can adapt to apartment or small-home living when its exercise and mental needs are met.

It is less suitable for a household that wants a dog to remain alone all day, requires a completely silent pet, dislikes regular grooming, or expects a small dog to tolerate rough play. The breed’s compact body is convenient, but its care needs are not miniature.

Common Maltese misconceptions

Claim More accurate view
“Maltese are hypoallergenic.” They may shed relatively little, but no dog is allergy-proof.
“A small dog needs no training.” Training helps with barking, housetraining, handling, and safe behavior.
“Short hair means no grooming.” A short trim reduces coat maintenance but does not eliminate brushing or other routine care.
“Carrying the dog is enough exercise.” Maltese still benefit from age-appropriate walks, play, and mental engagement.
“Tiny puppies are better.” Do not choose a dog for an extreme size promise; ask about health and records instead.

FAQ

Are Maltese good apartment dogs?

They can be. VCA describes Maltese as adaptable to indoor living and moderately active; short walks, indoor play, and mental engagement can suit many dogs. Barking and tolerance for alone time still need attention.

How much grooming does a Maltese need?

VCA recommends daily brushing to help prevent mats, and its breed-care profile recommends combing every day or two. A shorter clipped style can reduce the workload but does not remove the need for regular care.

Do Maltese shed, and are they hypoallergenic?

Maltese may shed relatively little, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. People with allergies should spend time with the individual dog before adopting.

Are Maltese easy to housetrain?

They can be housetrained, but owners should plan for frequent scheduled opportunities, close supervision, and immediate rewards. Avoid punishment for accidents discovered later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long do Maltese live?

VCA’s published profiles give estimates of 12–15 years and 12–14 years. These are source-specific profile estimates, not guarantees of an individual dog’s lifespan.

What health tests should I ask a Maltese breeder about?

Ask for the parents’ documented health-evaluation results and an explanation. The American Maltese Association names patella and congenital-heart evaluations as CHIC requirements and recommends bile-acid testing, particularly for puppies; discuss a puppy’s individual checks with its veterinarian.

The Bottom Line

The Maltese is an affectionate, lively toy companion—not a decorative dog that can be ignored between grooming appointments. Choose one if you can provide close companionship, patient training, regular coat and dental care, and gentle handling. With those basics in place, a Maltese can be an engaging household companion.
