Maltipoo Dog Breed Information & Characteristics

Maltipoos are affectionate, intelligent Maltese–Poodle crosses that need companionship, daily enrichment, frequent grooming, and careful dental care. Learn what to expect before bringing one home.

A Maltipoo combines a Maltese with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The result is usually a small, affectionate companion with a low-shedding coat—but there is no single Maltipoo “type.” Size, coat texture, color, energy level, and behavior can differ substantially from one dog to the next.

That variability is important when deciding whether one fits your home. Maltipoos can be bright and highly trainable, but they also need regular companionship, daily interaction, frequent grooming, and preventive dental care. They are not truly hypoallergenic, and their small size does not make them maintenance-free.

Maltipoo at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Parent breeds Maltese and Toy or Miniature Poodle
Adult height About 8–14 inches
Adult weight About 5–20 pounds
Life expectancy Approximately 13–16 years
Coat Usually low-shedding; may be wavy, curly, or silky
Grooming Frequent brushing plus regular clipping
Typical personality Affectionate, social, intelligent, and often alert
AKC status Not an AKC-recognized purebred breed

These figures are useful estimates, not guarantees. A Maltipoo from a Toy Poodle parent will generally be smaller than one with Miniature Poodle ancestry, but the puppy’s eventual size still depends on the individual parents and inherited traits.

Appearance and coat

Most Maltipoos have a compact body, drop ears, dark expressive eyes, and a soft coat. The coat may be lightly wavy, curly, or closer to the Maltese’s silky texture. Common colors include white, cream, apricot, red, black, gray, brown, and combinations of these shades.

Unlike a standardized purebred, the Maltipoo has no official AKC breed standard defining its precise appearance. Two dogs sold under the same name can therefore look noticeably different.

Are “teacup” Maltipoos a separate type?

No. “Teacup,” “micro,” and “tiny” are marketing terms, not officially recognized varieties. An unusually small puppy may also be more vulnerable to accidental injury and problems maintaining blood sugar. When assessing a puppy, look at the actual parents, veterinary records, breeding conditions, and medical history rather than the label used in an advertisement.

Maltipoo temperament

Maltipoos are commonly affectionate, people-oriented, social, and eager to learn. Many bond closely with one or two household members and enjoy being involved in ordinary family activity. Their behavior can reflect both parent breeds, however, as well as early socialization and the way the puppy was raised.

Many are alert and vocal. Barking at a sound in the hallway is different from a dog that spends much of the day barking from boredom, anxiety, or lack of training. Rewarding quiet behavior, teaching the dog to move to a mat, and providing appropriate activity are more useful than shouting at the dog. Punishment may increase fear or make defensive behavior worse.

Can Maltipoos be left alone?

Some Maltipoos manage short periods alone, while others struggle considerably. Barking, howling, pacing, destruction, house-soiling, or escape attempts that occur specifically when the dog is alone may indicate separation anxiety rather than stubbornness. Escape efforts can result in broken teeth, damaged nails, or other injuries.

Management may include gradual departures, calm arrival routines, food toys, behavior modification, and professional help. Severe cases should involve a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. Punishing a dog after an anxious episode does not address the cause and can intensify the problem.

Exercise and mental stimulation

A Maltipoo usually needs daily activity, but not every dog requires the same amount or intensity. A practical routine can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Short walks appropriate for the dog’s age, health, and size.
  • Active indoor or outdoor play.
  • Several brief reward-based training sessions.
  • Food puzzles or supervised enrichment activities.
  • Opportunities to sniff and explore safely.

The Poodle side can contribute considerable intelligence and a desire to work with people. If a Maltipoo is mentally under-stimulated, barking, chewing, attention-seeking, or destructive behavior may follow.

Young and very small puppies need extra caution. Falls from furniture, rough play, strenuous exercise, and long gaps between meals can be dangerous. Toy-sized puppies can be susceptible to hypoglycemia if they do not consume enough calories. Establish the feeding and activity routine for a young puppy with the breeder and veterinarian.

Grooming requirements

A Maltipoo’s coat can mat quickly, especially behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and in areas that become damp. Mats pull on the skin, conceal irritation, and can make grooming painful.

Plan on:

  • Brushing frequently—often every day—to remove tangles before they tighten.
  • Regular professional grooming or clipping because the coat continues growing.
  • Routine ear checks and cleaning only as directed by a veterinarian or groomer.
  • Regular nail trims.
  • Daily dental care where possible.

A short haircut reduces the amount of coat to manage but does not remove the need for brushing or skin and ear checks. Teach a puppy gradually to accept a brush, nail handling, ear inspection, mouth handling, and the sound of clippers. This is part of socialization, not an optional extra.

Dental care is especially important

Small dogs often have crowded teeth, making periodontal disease a major preventive-care concern. Daily brushing with dog-safe toothpaste is the most effective home measure. Veterinary dental examinations and professional cleanings may still be necessary.

Do not use human toothpaste unless your veterinarian has specifically confirmed that a product is safe. Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, loose teeth, dropping food, chewing on one side, or reluctance to eat warrants a veterinary examination rather than being dismissed as normal for a small dog.

Maltipoo health concerns

A crossbreed is not automatically free of inherited disease. A Maltipoo can inherit health risks associated with Maltese ancestry, Poodle ancestry, or both. The following conditions are possibilities, not predictions or diagnoses:

Concern Signs or relevance
Dental and periodontal disease Commonly important in small dogs; watch for bad breath, gum changes, loose teeth, or difficulty eating.
Patellar luxation The kneecap slips out of position and may cause skipping, intermittent limping, or a bunny-hop gait.
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease A painful disorder affecting part of the hip joint, seen primarily in small dogs.
Eye disease Poodle ancestry is associated with several eye disorders, so routine veterinary assessment matters.
Progressive retinal atrophy An inherited retinal disease that can lead to vision loss; DNA testing is available for some Poodle-related forms.
Epilepsy Seizures can have several causes. Collapse, stiffening, paddling, or sudden loss of bladder or bowel control needs veterinary attention.
Liver shunts Maltese ancestry is associated with portosystemic-shunt concerns; testing depends on the puppy’s history and clinical signs.
Tracheal collapse A dry, goose-honk cough or breathing difficulty can occur with weakening of the windpipe.

Seek prompt veterinary care for sudden lameness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, collapse, seizures, severe pain, or marked lethargy. Routine examinations, weight control, vaccination, parasite prevention, dental care, and attention to changes in behavior all help protect a Maltipoo’s long-term health.

Is a Maltipoo hypoallergenic?

No dog is truly hypoallergenic. Allergy symptoms are usually triggered by proteins in dander, saliva, and other materials—not simply by loose hair. Because many Maltipoos shed relatively little, some allergy sufferers may tolerate an individual dog better than a heavy-shedding dog, but there is no guarantee.

Anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific dog before adopting. If symptoms are significant, consult an allergist rather than relying on a breed description.

Training a Maltipoo

Maltipoos generally respond well to short, frequent sessions using food rewards, play, and praise. Keep household rules consistent: if barking at the window is not allowed, every person should respond in the same way.

Start early with:

  1. House-training and a predictable toilet schedule.
  2. Leash skills and calm greetings.
  3. Bite inhibition and appropriate chewing.
  4. Impulse control, including waiting at doors.
  5. Handling of paws, ears, mouth, grooming tools, and veterinary restraint.
  6. Gradual exposure to people, stable dogs, surfaces, sounds, vehicles, and new places.

A small body does not mean a dog needs less training. Inconsistent rules can produce a Maltipoo that is difficult to handle, particularly when barking, jumping, guarding attention, or resisting grooming becomes established. Harsh corrections may create fear, avoidance, or defensive behavior.

Feeding and weight management

Feed a complete and balanced diet suited to the dog’s life stage, size, and health. Use body condition and veterinary advice—not an apparently bottomless appetite—to determine whether portions are appropriate. Excess weight puts additional strain on joints and may worsen mobility problems. Treats should make up only a limited share of daily calories.

Very young toy-sized puppies may need more frequent meals to reduce the risk of low blood sugar. Do not improvise a schedule for a particularly small puppy; agree on one with the breeder and veterinarian, and ask what warning signs require urgent care.

How to choose a responsible Maltipoo breeder

Before paying a deposit, request:

  1. The registered names and health records of both parents.
  2. Veterinary records for the puppy, including examinations, vaccinations, deworming, and identification.
  3. A written contract explaining health guarantees, return provisions, and each party’s responsibilities.
  4. An opportunity to see where the puppies are raised and, when possible, meet the mother.
  5. Documented health testing relevant to both Maltese and Poodle ancestry.

For Toy Poodles, the AKC lists patella evaluation, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and a PRCD-PRA DNA test among recommended health checks. Maltese health guidance also discusses dental care and screening considerations involving liver shunts. A statement that a puppy was “vet checked” is not the same as documented health testing of the parents.

Be cautious of sellers who will not show records, will not let you see the raising environment, have multiple very young litters available, or use extreme size claims as their main selling point. A DNA ancestry report is not proof of pedigree, purity, or overall health: genetic tests assess selected variants or estimate ancestry and cannot rule out every inherited disease.

Is a Maltipoo a good family dog?

A Maltipoo may suit a home that can provide companionship, daily activity, consistent training, frequent coat care, and ongoing dental prevention. It may be a poor fit for a household where the dog will routinely spend long periods alone, grooming is impractical, or someone needs a reliably allergy-free pet.

Because Maltipoos are small, supervise interactions with young children and larger dogs. Stairs, elevated furniture, and rough play also create injury risks. Choose the individual puppy or adult dog based on health history and observed behavior rather than assuming that every Maltipoo will have the same temperament.

FAQ

How big does a Maltipoo get?

Most Maltipoos are about 8–14 inches tall and weigh approximately 5–20 pounds as adults. The Poodle parent’s size and the individual dog’s genetics have a major effect, so puppy size estimates are not exact.

Do Maltipoos shed?

Maltipoos are usually low-shedding, but their coat still needs frequent brushing and regular clipping because it can tangle and mat quickly. Low shedding does not make a Maltipoo hypoallergenic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long can a Maltipoo be left alone?

There is no universal safe number of hours. Many Maltipoos are strongly people-oriented and may develop separation-related problems if alone time is long or increased too quickly. Build absences gradually and seek veterinary or behavior help if the dog panics, destroys objects, vocalizes, or tries to escape.

What health tests should a Maltipoo breeder provide?

Ask for documented testing relevant to both parent breeds. Recommended Toy Poodle checks include patella evaluation, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and PRCD-PRA DNA testing. Ask about Maltese-related concerns as well, including dental health and liver-shunt screening considerations. A routine puppy vet check alone does not replace parent health testing.

The Bottom Line

A Maltipoo can be a loving, clever companion for a household prepared to provide company, training, daily enrichment, regular grooming, and serious dental care. The trade-off for its small size and low-shedding coat is not low responsibility: separation problems, matting, dental disease, and inherited health concerns all deserve planning. Meet the individual dog, verify the parents’ records, and judge suitability by the dog’s needs—not by “teacup” or “hypoallergenic” marketing.
