A six-year-old female dolphin born in Mandurah was reported sighted in Bunbury’s Leschenault Estuary in March 2025, after being missing for two years. The report did not name her, establish how she travelled between the estuaries, or confirm her whereabouts after the sighting.
What happened to the Mandurah dolphin?
Geographe Marine Research spotted the dolphin in the Leschenault Estuary, in north Bunbury, over the weekend before the story was published on 26 March 2025. Its director, Rodney Peterson, passed the sighting to Estuary Guardians Mandurah and the Mandurah Dolphin Research Project for identification. The report described the dolphin as female, six years old and born in Mandurah, but did not give her name or the date she disappeared.

The story also said five other dolphins that went missing in winter 2023 had been discovered in the Bunbury area in January 2025. It described the newly sighted dolphin as being alongside that group; it did not provide a confirmed route for her journey or say she had been rescued or permanently located.

That has not been established. The separate Mandurah FinBook 2025 records Amira and Buddy as dolphins that went missing from the Peel-Harvey Estuary in 2024 and were sighted in Bunbury in 2025. Those entries do not identify either animal as the unnamed six-year-old in the March report. The records should be treated separately unless researchers confirm a match.

How do researchers identify dolphins?
Mandurah’s council describes photo-identification surveys in which researchers photograph dolphins and compare natural markings on their dorsal fins. They also record group location and behaviour. This explains how a sighting can be referred to local researchers, but the March 2025 news report does not describe the identification method used in this particular case or publish a confirmed name.
The City of Mandurah estimates that approximately 90 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live in its waterways. That is a local population estimate, not a count of dolphins in Bunbury or evidence that all Mandurah dolphins travel between the two estuaries.

What is known about the dolphin now?
The available reports establish a sighting in March 2025, not the dolphin’s current location, health, identity or route. Estuary Guardians Mandurah, quoted by PerthNow, said: “It is such good news but there is so much more to this unfolding story to come.” The news report said a fuller account was planned for a community dolphin-watch night on 27 March 2025, but the sources cited here do not confirm what was shared at that event.
What should you do if you see an injured or stranded dolphin?
The City of Mandurah advises people to report injured or stranded dolphins, keep their distance and avoid crowds, loud noises and drones. Do not try to move a stranded dolphin. Give responders the animal’s location and condition.
