The sighting, on 5 December 2024, prompted patrols and monitoring around Exmouth, but the published reports do not establish where the animal went afterward.
What happened at Bundegi Boat Ramp
Amber Lamond was travelling around Australia in a caravan with her husband, Greg, and their young sons when she filmed a crocodile at Bundegi Boat Ramp near Exmouth on 5 December 2024. She told PerthNow that the family had swum there the previous day. The report identified the younger children as Angus, three, and Ledger, one.

Lamond described the shock of seeing the animal at a place where she and the children had recently been in the water: “It was a bit of a shock, you hear that they can come down here but to actually see it where I’d been swimming a day before with the kids was a bit scary.”

In the 9 December 2024 report, a Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said staff had confirmed a sighting of an estuarine, or saltwater, crocodile at nearby McLeod Beach on 7 December and considered it probably the same animal Lamond filmed. Two reports from around Learmonth on 8 December could not be confirmed as sightings of that crocodile because there was no photographic evidence.

The newspaper reported that Parks and Wildlife Service staff and the Shire of Exmouth were carrying out patrols and surveillance, and that warning signs had been installed. The spokesperson said the crocodile did not then meet the category for removal; staff would continue monitoring and look for a safe opportunity to deploy a trap. Those statements describe the response in December 2024, not a current alert or confirmed outcome.
Why a crocodile can be seen near Exmouth
Exmouth is near the southern end of known crocodile habitat in Western Australia. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) says estuarine crocodiles are not normally found on the Ningaloo Coast, although rare, isolated occurrences have been recorded. DBCA’s broader crocodile conservation and management information says known habitat extends south to Exmouth, with occasional records farther south to Carnarvon.

The Bundegi Beach visitor information lists swimming among the site’s activities and cautions visitors about water conditions; an activities list is not a current safety clearance.

The 9 December 2024 account and DBCA’s general crocodile information do not establish whether the animal was later trapped, relocated, or confirmed absent. They also do not establish the current status of any warning signs or restrictions. Lamond told the newspaper she was nervous about swimming from shore afterward: “I’m nervous even about going down for an afternoon swim on the gulf side. Even though it looks small I don’t want to risk it. I’ll go out on the boat but not on the shore.”
