Yes. A PerthNow report published on 31 December 2023 said a child found a blue-ringed octopus after bringing a shell ashore at Point Peron, and a separate beachgoer posted a dugite photograph from the beach. The reported encounters happened on 30 December 2023. The report did not say anyone was bitten or that the animals met.
What was reported at Point Peron?
PerthNow reported that a father said his child collected a shell while snorkelling and discovered a blue-ringed octopus when the shell reached shore. Separately, another person posted photographs of a dugite at the beach in the same social-media group, according to the report. The account identifies two separate encounters on the same day, not an interaction between the animals. PerthNow’s report is the source for those specific sightings; it is not an official wildlife incident log.

The report quotes Lisa Kirkendale, identified as head of aquatic zoology at the Western Australian Museum, saying blue-ringed octopuses are not unusual in waters off Rockingham and Perth. That is her attributed geographic context, not a quantified estimate of how often they are seen. The available sources do not independently confirm the dugite identification in the photograph.
Can a blue-ringed octopus hide in a shell?
Yes. The WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development lists old shells among the places blue-ringed octopuses may shelter, along with rock pools, sheltered rocky holes and discarded bottles. The Western Australian Museum explains that octopuses can squeeze into small spaces such as reef crevices and among rocks.

A shell or other object on the shore may therefore conceal an animal. Avoid picking up or pocketing unknown marine animals or objects that could provide shelter. Blue rings may flash when an octopus is disturbed, excited or angry, but do not rely on seeing rings to decide that an animal is safe to approach. DPIRD’s blue-ringed octopus fact sheet describes their habitat and warning display.
