The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a unique South American canid—not a true wolf and not a fox. It is the only living species in its genus, stands unusually tall on long black legs, and combines a fruit-heavy omnivorous diet with mostly solitary behavior.
These 10 facts explain its anatomy, range, food, communication, family life, lifespan and conservation status. Population figures are dated whenever the underlying assessment is dated, and measurements from zoo records are identified as human-care data rather than wild-caught estimates.

1. A maned wolf is its own kind of canid
The scientific name Chrysocyon brachyurus belongs to the genus Chrysocyon, which has only one living species. That makes the maned wolf evolutionarily distinct from the gray wolf, Ethiopian wolf and other animals commonly called wolves. It is also separate from foxes, even though its narrow face and reddish coat can look fox-like at a glance.
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes it as “the largest canid of South America.” “Canid” means a member of the dog family, Canidae; it does not mean the animal is a wolf. Its unusual combination of long legs, a mane of darker hair and an omnivorous diet reflects a lineage adapted to South American open habitats rather than a smaller version of a familiar northern wolf.

2. Its height comes from exceptionally long legs
A maned wolf’s most obvious feature is its stilt-like build. The Smithsonian species profile gives an approximate shoulder height of 3 feet (90 centimeters) and a weight of about 50 pounds (23 kilograms). The long legs lift its head above tall grasses, helping it see across open country and move through vegetation without the body shape of a stocky pack-hunting wolf.
The coat is thick and reddish, while the lower legs are black. The dark mane along the neck can stand up when the animal is alarmed, making the silhouette appear larger. Tall ears add to the impression of height and are useful for locating prey and detecting other maned wolves.
| Measurement or trait | Value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulder height | About 3 feet (90 cm) | Approximate figure from the Smithsonian species profile; it is not a claim that every wild adult reaches exactly this height. |
| Body weight | About 50 pounds (23 kg) | Approximate Smithsonian profile figure; weight varies with sex, age, condition and season. |
| Legs and coat | Long black legs; thick red coat | Structural and color description from the Smithsonian profile. |
3. It lives in central South America
Maned wolves occupy a broad but patchy area of central South America. The Smithsonian profile names Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, southern Peru and northern Argentina. The IUCN Red List’s range-country account lists Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Peru as extant countries and notes Uruguay as possibly extinct.

A country list is not a map of continuous occupancy. Within each country, suitable grasslands, savannas, wetlands and forest mosaics are interspersed with farmland, towns, roads and other altered land. Presence can therefore differ sharply between neighboring landscapes, and the listed countries should not be read as proof that maned wolves still occur everywhere inside their borders.

4. Open, mixed landscapes are its preferred habitat
The species is strongly associated with open country, especially Brazil’s Cerrado. The Smithsonian describes a mosaic that can include wet and dry forests, grasslands, savannas, marshes and other wetlands. The IUCN account likewise lists forest, savanna, shrubland, grassland and inland wetlands among the habitats used.
This mixture matters because maned wolves need more than one resource in the same home range: open ground for traveling and hunting, vegetation that supports fruiting plants, and cover or den sites for resting and raising pups. Conversion of native habitat to crops and pasture removes or fragments that mosaic. Fragmentation can also force animals to cross roads or move through areas where conflict with people is more likely.
5. Fruit can make up half of its diet
Maned wolves are omnivores. The Smithsonian profile says seasonal fruits and vegetables—especially lobeira, a small tomato-like berry—can account for 50 percent of the diet. That figure describes the profile’s account of feeding habits, not a universal percentage for every population, year or season. Availability of fruit changes with rainfall, plant cycles and local habitat.

A fruit-and-prey menu lets it use resources that a strictly carnivorous wolf could not. Lobeira is particularly notable because the maned wolf is an important consumer and disperser of the plant’s seeds: seeds pass through the digestive tract and may be deposited elsewhere in suitable habitat. The result is a canid that functions partly as a predator and partly as a fruit-eating seed disperser.

6. It hunts alone and uses sound, hearing and a front-foot tap
The Smithsonian characterizes the maned wolf as primarily solitary when hunting. Its large ears can rotate to pinpoint rustling prey in grass. When it detects a small animal, it may tap the ground with a front foot to flush the prey from cover, then pounce or dig.
This technique is different from the coordinated pursuit of a wolf pack. Solitary hunting suits a species that often takes small mammals, insects and other individually manageable prey. It also allows an animal to forage for fruit during the same outing. A maned wolf may travel through its territory alone while still encountering a mate or neighbor through scent and vocal signals.
7. Its signature call is a “roar bark,” not a wolf howl
Maned wolves communicate with loud barks, sometimes called “roar barks,” according to the Smithsonian profile. The call can help a male and female locate each other or warn another maned wolf away. It is acoustically and behaviorally distinct from the long howls associated with gray-wolf packs.

Scent marking is another major part of communication. Animals mark with urine and feces, leaving chemical information along paths and territory boundaries. A mark can advertise presence, reinforce ownership of an area and provide reproductive information without requiring the animals to meet face to face. These signals are especially useful for a species whose adults spend much of their time apart.

8. Mated pairs share a territory without forming a pack
The Smithsonian profile describes monogamous pairs that share a territory of about 10 square miles (26 square kilometers). Sharing a territory does not mean the pair travels, hunts or rests together continuously. A separate Smithsonian overview of reproductive chemical communication describes mates as solitary, defending the same territory and interacting infrequently.
This arrangement combines long-term pair association with substantial independence. Each animal can forage alone, while scent marks and occasional encounters maintain the pair bond and territorial boundary. Territory size is an approximate figure from the profile, not a fixed rule: food distribution, habitat quality and human disturbance can change the area an individual needs.

Some of the best-known life-history numbers are not measurements of a wild population. The Smithsonian profile reports a gestation of 65 days and a mean litter size of 2.5 pups, based largely on research involving animals in human care. The same profile says wild lifespan is unknown.
For animals in human care, the profile gives a median life expectancy of 6.5 years and a maximum of 12 to 15 years. A median is the midpoint of recorded lifespans, not a guarantee that an individual will live that long. The maximum range describes exceptional longevity in managed settings and should not be substituted for a wild-lifespan estimate.

| Life-history measure | Reported figure | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gestation | 65 days | Smithsonian profile; breeding information is based largely on animals in human care. |
| Mean litter size | 2.5 pups | Smithsonian profile; human-care research context. |
| Median life expectancy | 6.5 years | Smithsonian profile; animals in human care, not a wild estimate. |
| Maximum recorded lifespan | 12–15 years | Smithsonian profile; maximum in human care, while wild lifespan is unknown. |
The Smithsonian reproductive overview also reports that a female’s receptive period lasts only about one to 10 days each year. That short annual window helps explain why timing and chemical communication are important to reproduction, even though the mates otherwise spend little time together.
10. The species is Near Threatened, but the global numbers are from 2015
The IUCN Red List classifies the maned wolf as Near Threatened in its assessment last conducted on 13 August 2015; the page notes an errata version published in 2016. That is the latest global assessment identified here, not a newly conducted 2026 census.
That assessment estimated approximately 17,000 mature individuals—animals at least two years old—and stated that more than 90 percent were in Brazil. It listed the population trend as unknown. “Mature individuals” is a narrower measure than counting every pup, juvenile and adult, so the figure should not be presented as the total number of maned wolves of all ages.

| Estimated population | Approximately 17,000 mature individuals | Assessment-era estimate; mature individuals are age two years and older. |
| Geographic concentration | More than 90 percent in Brazil | Statement from the same global assessment. |
| Trend | Unknown | The assessment did not establish a direction of change. |
Pressures identified in the assessment
- Habitat conversion: native landscapes are changed for crops and pasture.
- Persecution: livestock-loss concerns and cultural beliefs can lead to killing.
- Road mortality: fragmented habitat forces crossings that can be fatal.
- Domestic-animal disease: pathogens from dogs and other domestic animals can infect wild maned wolves.
The Smithsonian profile also refers to endangered classifications on Brazil’s and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s lists, but the dates and criteria for those national classifications are not established in the available material. They should not be treated as directly comparable to the dated global IUCN category without checking each authority’s current listing.
What these facts add up to
A maned wolf is a tall, solitary, fruit-eating canid specialized for South American grassland and savanna mosaics. Its biology makes it unlike both true wolves and foxes: it hunts alone, communicates with roar barks and scent, shares territory with a mate without living in a pack, and may obtain half of its seasonal food from fruit. Conservation decisions must account for that habitat dependence and for the age, date and geographic scope behind every population number.
