Josh, a dog at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, runs and plays with help from a custom wheelchair after injuries to both knees left him with limited mobility. Best Friends Animal Society shared his story on September 15, 2025, as part of its Faces of No-Kill series.
How Josh’s mobility changed
Best Friends reports that Josh arrived at the Sanctuary as a puppy: a large, enthusiastic dog who greeted people exuberantly. On walks, his caregivers gave him a stuffed toy to keep his mouth occupied.

The Sanctuary’s veterinarians found torn ligaments in both of Josh’s knees. The feature compares the injury type to an ACL tear in people. A visiting specialist operated on one knee, but, according to the account, the damage was too advanced for Josh to recover well. His other knee was not considered a good candidate for surgery. He was left with limited mobility.
How a custom wheelchair helped Josh play again

Car rides are a particular favorite. “He just loves riding in the car,” O’Dea says. He and Josh’s other caregivers hope to help the dog meet more people: “We just want to widen his circle of friends.”
