If your dog may have swallowed, inhaled, or touched something toxic, call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service now—even if your dog seems normal. Signs can be delayed, and symptoms alone cannot confirm poisoning or rule it out. If your dog is unconscious, struggling to breathe, bleeding, or having a seizure, go directly to an emergency veterinary clinic.

What signs of poisoning should you watch for?

Poisoning can affect the digestive system, nervous system, breathing, blood, kidneys, liver, or heart. Possible signs include:

  • Digestive: vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, drooling or excessive salivation, and loss of appetite.
  • Nervous system or behavior: unusual agitation, lethargy, abnormal behavior, tremors, seizures, reduced breathing, or coma.
  • Bleeding or circulation: coughing or vomiting blood, pale gums, weakness, a racing heart, or collapse.
  • Urination or liver-related changes: excessive thirst or urination, reduced or absent urination, yellow gums, or black, tarry stool.

These signs have many possible causes and are not unique to poisoning. As Pamela Huyck, a Certified Veterinary Technician at Pet Poison Helpline, puts it: “There is not one sign or set of signs that indicate poisoning.” A symptom list can help you recognize trouble, but it cannot identify a substance or determine whether your dog is safe.

Why you should call even if your dog looks well

A credible exposure matters before symptoms appear. Some poisons cause delayed effects, and care may become harder once a pet is symptomatic. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center guidance advises: “Even if your pet is acting normal, don’t wait to contact APCC.” A dog appearing well now—or after the first 24 hours—does not establish that the exposure is harmless.

  • PREPARED HERO PEACE OF MIND - Pets are pets. They get into things, especially when you're not looking. Be ready when your pet accidentally eats something toxic. • GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT FOR YOUR PET - One tube covers dogs & cats up to 30 lbs. Dog weighs 31-60 lbs? Get 2 tubes. Dog weighs 61-90 lbs? Get 3 tubes. Dog weighs 91-120 lbs? Get 4 tubes. Dog weighs more than 121 lbs? Get 5 tubes. We recommend giving at least 1cc/1lb of body weight. Less than the required amount won't fully absorb the toxin — make sure you have enough based on your pet's weight.
  • BROAD SPECTRUM ABSORPTION - PawMergency absorbs most common household items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and many more. It works by binding toxins in your pet's digestive tract before they can be absorbed, allowing them to be eliminated through normal bowel movements. A must have for your pet's first aid kit!
  • SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING - PawMergency is proudly made in the USA by a National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) preferred supplier. It’s produced following strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and tested by third-party labs to ensure quality, purity, and potency.
  • 2 YEAR SHELF LIFE - After each use, simply put the cap back on the end of the tube and store for up to 2 years in a cool, dry place.

Poisoning may follow swallowing, inhaling, or contact with the skin, eyes, or other mucous membranes. The substance, amount, route of exposure, and the dog’s individual characteristics all affect the risk.

What to do if you suspect poisoning

  1. Stop further exposure. If it is safe, move your dog away from the substance. Avoid exposing yourself while doing so.
  2. Check responsiveness and breathing. If your dog is unconscious, having difficulty breathing, bleeding, or seizing, go directly to an emergency veterinary clinic for immediate care.
  3. Call a veterinarian or poison-control service promptly. Do this even if your dog has no symptoms. Follow the professional’s instructions about whether to travel to a clinic and what to do next.
  4. Gather exposure information. Keep the packaging, label, remaining pills, or substance available. Be ready to describe your dog’s breed, age, weight, health, what they may have encountered, and when it happened.
  5. Do not try a home treatment unless directed. Do not induce vomiting or give an antidote or other remedy unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically instructs you. Some interventions are unsafe for particular substances or conditions; do not delay the call while searching for a remedy.

US animal poison-control contacts

These US services provide poison-specific guidance but do not replace emergency veterinary treatment. If your dog’s condition is severe, contact or go to a local emergency veterinary clinic immediately.

When symptom checking is not enough

Do not wait for a particular symptom to appear or try to match symptoms to a specific poison. If exposure is possible, share what you know with a veterinary professional so they can assess the substance, amount, route, timing, and your dog’s condition. This is general information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for individualized veterinary advice.
