Microchip vs. GPS Tracker for Dogs: Which Helps Most if They Get Lost?

GPS trackers help owners search for a lost dog; microchips help identify a dog after discovery. A current ID tag adds a direct way for finders to call.

A GPS tracker can help you locate a dog while it is wearing the device and the tracker has power and a working signal. A microchip cannot show a dog’s location; it helps identify the dog after someone finds and scans it. For the best coverage, use both, plus a collar with a current ID tag.

What each device does when a dog is lost

Question Microchip GPS tracker
Can it show the dog’s location? No. A microchip is read with a scanner; it does not track the dog. The American Veterinary Medical Association explains how pet microchips work. Yes, while the dog wears a working tracker and its location and communication links are available. Tractive’s DOG 6 is one example of a cellular-connected model.
How does it help after the dog is found? A scanner reads the chip’s unique ID number. A registry can use that number to help contact the owner if the chip is registered and the contact information is current. It can send location updates to the owner, depending on the device, power, signal and service. It does not replace identification if someone finds the dog.
What can limit its usefulness? The dog may not be scanned, or the chip may not be registered or linked to up-to-date contact details. The tracker may be lost or removed, run out of battery, lose GPS reception or—on cellular models—lack cellular coverage or an active service plan.
What should the owner maintain? Register the chip number, keep contact details current and ask a veterinarian to confirm the chip can be read. Charge the device, attach it securely, check coverage where the dog goes and maintain any required subscription.

How a microchip helps reunite a found dog

A pet microchip is a small identification device that carries a unique number. It does not contain a GPS transmitter or show where a dog is. A shelter, animal-control agency or veterinary clinic can scan a found dog; the number can then be used to find registry information and contact the owner. The chip only helps if someone scans it and the associated registry details are usable.

Microchips are not a substitute for a visible collar tag. A finder who sees a current phone number on a tag can contact you directly without locating a scanner or registry.

How a GPS tracker helps locate a dog

A GPS tracker can provide location updates while it is attached to the dog and operating. The exact method of sending those updates varies by product. For the cited Tractive design, GPS satellites help determine the tracker’s position, while a built-in SIM and cellular network send that information to the app. Tractive says the device needs cellular coverage to transmit data and works best with a clear view of the sky. Other trackers may use different communication systems, so check the specifications of the model you are considering.

#1 Best Overall

  • REAL-TIME GPS TRACKING WITH UNLIMITED RANGE: Track your dog’s live location nationwide with updates every 2-3 seconds—up to 30x faster than competitors who only update once per minute. Perfect for keeping an eye on your dog no matter where they roam.
  • VIRTUAL FENCES & LOCATION HISTORY: Set up safe zones and receive alerts when your dog leaves the area. Activate live tracking immediately to recover your dog, and review their location history to see where they've been.
  • HEALTH & ACTIVITY MONITORING: Monitor your dog’s daily health, sleep patterns, and activity levels through the Tractive app, available on iOS and Android, so you can keep them in optimal shape.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT, WATERPROOF DESIGN & LONG-LASTING BATTERY: This lightweight tracker is waterproof and rugged enough for outdoor adventures. The battery lasts up to 10 days, with extended life using Power Saving Zones.
  • RISK-FREE TRIAL: This bundle includes 6 months of free premium service to cover all the costs of the integrated SIM card and data. No additional activation fee is required to start tracking your pet!

For a cellular tracker such as this one, an active subscription is required. Even then, a dead battery, poor GPS reception, weak cellular coverage or a tracker that has come off the dog can interrupt location updates. A tracker can narrow the search; it cannot guarantee recovery.

Why the strongest setup uses all three

  • GPS tracker: helps you follow the dog’s location while the device is worn, charged and connected.
  • Microchip: provides a permanent identification link if the dog is found and scanned.
  • Collar ID tag: gives a finder a direct way to contact you without special equipment.

Each layer covers a different gap: a tracker may be lost or run out of power, a collar can come off, and a microchip cannot guide you to a dog’s current location. Keep the phone number and other contact details on both the tag and the microchip registry current.

What the return statistics do—and do not—show

The American Animal Hospital Association reports that 52.2% of microchipped dogs in a study of more than 7,700 stray animals at shelters were returned to their owners, compared with 21.9% of dogs without microchips. The FAQ does not specify the study year. These are reported outcomes in a shelter sample, not a guarantee for an individual dog and not a comparison of microchips with GPS trackers. If your dog goes missing

Act promptly and follow the procedures where you live. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service advises owners to report a missing pet, share details such as the microchip number and last-seen information, contact relevant animal services, and widen the search with neighborhood searches, flyers and local online communities. Elsewhere, contact the local animal-control agency and nearby shelters or veterinary clinics, and use local missing-pet reporting channels. If you have a tracker, check its latest location, but continue the search and notify local services rather than relying on location updates alone. See Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service guidance for lost and found pets.
