It is a roughly 70-centimeter (27.5-inch), extremely vocal macaw whose wild life involves long flights, social living, complex foraging and nesting in tree cavities or cliffs. Keeping one responsibly means planning for noise, space, enrichment, veterinary care, lawful sourcing and a commitment that can last decades.
The right question is not simply whether a military macaw is attractive or can learn to interact with people. It is whether your household can support the biological and social needs of a large, intelligent, flight-oriented bird while respecting a species under conservation pressure.

What a military macaw is like
The military macaw (Ara militaris) is a large New World parrot. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2015 final rule describes adults as about 70 cm (27.5 inches) long and “extremely vocal”; the rule says the species is very noisy and known to shriek. That description matters in a home: a macaw’s calls can be intense, carry through walls and windows, and occur at times you may not expect.

In the wild, military macaws are commonly seen in pairs or small flocks. They nest in tree cavities and cliffs rather than living a solitary life. A companion bird may bond closely with people, but human attention does not erase its need for social contact, activity, choice and appropriate stimulation.

The National Aviary describes a fragmented range extending from Mexico to northwest Argentina. Its profile notes that wild birds may fly as far as 15 miles in a day to feed. The Fish and Wildlife Service rule cites observations of travel up to 20 km (12 miles) per day. These figures describe natural-history behavior, not a prescription that a captive bird must fly a stated distance every day. They do show why a small cage, little out-of-cage time or a monotonous room is an inadequate plan.
Wild birds also eat a varied diet and spend time locating and processing food. The World Parrot Trust describes military macaws as chewers. In captivity, those traits translate into a need for safe, regularly changed opportunities to forage, manipulate and chew—not just a bowl of food and a perch.
Why “attention” means more than affection
A military macaw may enjoy handling, training and social interaction, but attention should be understood as a daily care system rather than constant cuddling. A suitable routine has several parts:
- Movement: enough safe room and supervised out-of-enclosure time for climbing, wing movement and exploration.
- Foraging: food presentation and activities that require investigation and manipulation, adjusted to the individual bird’s abilities.
- Chewing: bird-safe materials that can be destroyed and replaced after inspection.
- Social contact: predictable interaction without forcing contact when the bird is frightened, overstimulated or defensive.
- Rest and predictability: a quiet, protected sleep period and a routine that lets the bird anticipate feeding, cleaning and interaction.
These are planning principles, not a species-specific medical protocol. An avian veterinarian should help tailor diet, housing, enrichment and health monitoring to the individual bird, its age, condition and history.
Vocalization, intelligence and household fit
Expect substantial noise
The Fish and Wildlife Service’s wording is unusually direct: “The military macaw (Ara militaris, Linnaeus 1766) is an extremely vocal species; it is described as being very noisy and is known to shriek.” A bird can be healthy, well trained and well cared for while still making loud calls. Training may improve communication and reduce some attention-seeking patterns, but it cannot turn a macaw into a quiet pet.

Before acquiring one, consider neighbors, shared walls, sleeping schedules, children’s nap times and anyone in the home who is sensitive to sound. Identify a location where the bird can participate in household life without being placed beside a bedroom, a constantly opening exterior door or fumes from cooking and cleaning products. Never plan to solve noise by isolating the bird for most of the day.
Plan for a thinking animal
Large parrots notice changes in people, rooms and routines. A bored bird may become destructive, fearful, loud or difficult to handle. The solution is not an endless stream of novelty; it is a rotation of safe activities, opportunities to make choices and calm reinforcement of behaviors you want to see. Introduce new objects gradually and observe whether the bird investigates, avoids or damages them in an unsafe way.
Space, flight and enrichment planning
The species’ long daily flights in the wild should influence your housing plan, even though those observations do not specify a captive exercise target. A military macaw needs more than a decorative cage. Plan for the largest secure enclosure your home and budget can support, plus a safe area for supervised activity outside it. The enclosure must permit comfortable movement, climbing and wing extension, and its construction must withstand a powerful beak.
Remove hazards before the bird arrives. Windows and exterior doors need reliable barriers; ceiling fans must be switched off during flight; electrical cords, toxic plants, open water, hot cookware and other pets require management. Macaws can reach objects that people assume are out of range, so inspect the room from the bird’s height rather than from an adult’s eye level.
A practical enrichment rotation
- Offer several types of perches with safe, varied surfaces, replacing worn or contaminated items.
- Provide destructible chew materials and inspect them daily for splinters, loose fibers or swallowed pieces.
- Use foraging activities that hide or divide food, beginning with easy access and increasing difficulty only when the bird understands the task.
- Rotate activities instead of placing every toy in the room at once; keep a record of what the bird uses and what it ignores.
- Include calm training sessions based on voluntary participation, such as stepping onto a hand-held perch and returning to the enclosure.
The Association of Avian Veterinarians includes foraging among its bird-owner resources. The World Parrot Trust’s description of military macaws as chewers supports providing appropriate materials, but neither source establishes that every toy, wood type or household item is safe. Check materials, fasteners, dyes and construction, and ask your veterinarian about uncertain products.

Feeding: a framework, not a one-size-fits-all menu
General macaw guidance from PetMD supports a high-quality formulated pellet as one component of the diet alongside other dietary components. That is broad macaw advice, not a clinical, military-macaw-specific recipe. Do not treat a website’s generic food list as a substitute for an avian veterinarian’s assessment.

Discuss the bird’s current diet before changing it. Sudden changes can reduce intake, and a bird that appears to eat may be wasting food. Weighing and monitoring should be explained by a professional who can show you how to recognize meaningful changes without causing stress. Fresh water, clean food dishes and hygienic storage are basic requirements, while the exact balance of pellets, produce, treats and other foods should be individualized.
Avoid building a diet around treats or a single favorite seed. Ask the veterinarian whether the bird needs a gradual transition, bloodwork or additional monitoring based on its body condition and medical history. Never add supplements on your own simply because a product is marketed for parrots.
Veterinary care and health monitoring
The Association of Avian Veterinarians states that it recommends regular checkups for companion birds so they can live a full, healthy life. Locate an avian veterinarian before bringing the macaw home, not after an emergency. Its Bird Owner Resources include a Find-A-Vet resource that can help you identify practices to contact.
What to establish at the first visit
- Baseline weight and body-condition assessment.
- A physical examination and discussion of the bird’s previous records.
- Dietary review and a safe transition plan if the current food is unsuitable.
- Guidance on nail, beak and feather care, with clarification of what should never be trimmed at home.
- A preventive-care schedule and instructions for recording appetite, droppings, activity, sleep and behavior.
- Emergency instructions, including which clinic accepts birds outside normal hours.
Macaws often conceal illness until they are seriously unwell. Changes such as reduced appetite, unusual quietness, altered droppings, breathing effort, weakness, sitting low on a perch or a sudden change in behavior warrant prompt veterinary advice. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the bird appears acutely ill.

The long-term commitment
Animal Diversity Web gives a maximum captive lifespan of 54 years for the military macaw. The same account cautions that commonly repeated claims of a 50-to-60-year wild lifespan lack reputable support in its account. The responsible conclusion is that a military macaw can be a several-decade commitment, while the exact lifespan of an individual cannot be promised.
Plan for changes in housing, employment, finances, relationships and health. Decide who would care for the bird if you were hospitalized or could no longer provide care. Put records, the veterinarian’s contact details, feeding instructions and an emergency caregiver’s permission in a place that another person can access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Conservation and legal responsibility
The Fish and Wildlife Service identifies habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation, small population size, poaching and inadequate regulatory mechanisms as threats to military macaws. The agency published a U.S. federal final rule listing the species as endangered under the Endangered Species Act on October 2, 2015; the rule took effect November 2, 2015.
That is a U.S.-specific listing action, not a universal answer to ownership, import or sale rules. Requirements differ by country, state, province and municipality and can change. Before any deposit or transport, contact the relevant wildlife, agriculture or environmental authority and ask what applies to the exact species, transaction and location.
Questions for a lawful, documented source
- What is the bird’s complete scientific identification, and are the records consistent with a military macaw rather than a hybrid or another macaw?
- What documents establish lawful origin, captive breeding or prior ownership?
- Are there permits, certificates, transport papers or registration requirements for your jurisdiction?
- Can you review veterinary records, dates of examinations and the bird’s current diet?
- What happens if the bird fails a veterinary examination or the placement cannot proceed?
Walk away from a seller who pressures you to skip paperwork, discourages an independent veterinary examination or cannot explain the bird’s origin. Conservation status makes traceability an ethical issue as well as a legal one.

Is a military macaw a realistic choice for you?
| Question | Ready signs | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Noise | You have heard large-parrot calls and have a plan for neighbors and household schedules. | You need a reliably quiet animal or would isolate the bird when it calls. |
| Space and activity | You can provide a secure large enclosure, supervised activity space and daily enrichment. | The bird would spend most of the day in a small cage or an unsafe shared room. |
| Veterinary access | An avian veterinarian is identified, reachable and included in your budget and emergency plan. | No avian clinic is available within a practical distance and no emergency plan exists. |
| Time horizon | You have a decades-long care and contingency plan. | You expect a short-term pet or have no plan for relocation, illness or rehoming. |
| Legal and ethical sourcing | You will verify current rules and insist on complete documentation. | You are being asked to accept unclear origin or avoid authorities. |
If several warning signs apply, postpone the decision. Learning about macaws, volunteering with a reputable bird rescue or arranging time around experienced keepers can reveal whether the noise, mess, physical demands and daily routine fit your life without placing a bird at risk.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying for appearance: plumage does not predict an individual’s behavior, health or compatibility with your household.
- Equating tameness with low needs: a hand-raised bird still needs flight-related activity, foraging, chewing, social contact and preventive medicine.
- Using wild-flight numbers as a quota: the reported 12-to-15-mile journeys provide ecological context, not a measured home-exercise prescription.
- Assuming a generic diet is sufficient: broad macaw guidance must be adapted by an avian veterinarian.
- Waiting for illness to become obvious: regular examinations and daily observation are safer than relying on appearance alone.
- Ignoring paperwork: unclear provenance can expose you and the bird to legal and conservation harm.
Bottom line for prospective owners
A military macaw deserves attention because its needs are substantial and easy to underestimate. It is a loud, large, social, active parrot with a possible captive lifespan measured in decades, not a living ornament. Proceed only when you can provide secure space, meaningful daily enrichment, an avian-veterinary relationship, a plan for noise and future care, and documented lawful sourcing that respects the species’ conservation status.
Frequently Asked Questions
How loud is a military macaw?
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes the species as extremely vocal, very noisy and known to shriek. Individual call frequency varies, but a quiet-home expectation is unrealistic.
How long can a military macaw live in captivity?
Animal Diversity Web reports a maximum captive lifespan of 54 years and cautions that frequently repeated 50-to-60-year wild-lifespan claims are not supported by reputable evidence in its account.
Does a military macaw need to fly 12 or 15 miles every day at home?
No fixed home distance is established. The 12-mile and 15-mile figures are observations of wild travel reported by the Fish and Wildlife Service and National Aviary; they illustrate activity demands rather than a captive exercise prescription.
What should I feed a military macaw?
General macaw guidance supports a quality formulated pellet as one diet component, with other foods selected for the individual bird. Ask an avian veterinarian for a complete plan and any transition or monitoring instructions.
Is it legal to own a military macaw?
Rules depend on jurisdiction and can change. The United States listed the species as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in a rule published October 2, 2015, effective November 2, 2015; check current requirements with the relevant authorities before acquiring a bird.
