Axolotls became familiar to many people through Minecraft and TikTok, but the evidence does not show that either platform caused a surge in abandoned pets. In October 2022, New Zealand rescue operators reported unusually large numbers of axolotls needing homes. They also pointed to accidental breeding and owners unprepared for the animals’ demanding aquatic care. Those reports describe a particular place and time—not a current or global shelter count.
Are axolotls real, or only a Minecraft creature?
Axolotls are real aquatic salamanders, as well as creatures in Minecraft. Mojang’s Java Edition snapshot 20w51a, published December 9, 2020, announced, “Added the axolotl!” Its notes describe game mechanics, including carrying an axolotl in a water bucket and its interactions with tropical fish; they are not guidance about real animals. What did New Zealand rescues report in 2022?
In an October 2022 report, The Guardian described New Zealand rescues struggling with axolotl numbers. Amelia Seales, who ran an amphibian, reptile and animal rescue in Dunedin, said 600 axolotls had arrived in the previous week and that she then had 2,000 in her care. These are figures attributed to Seales in that report, not independently audited national totals or current intake statistics.

The same article reported a historical figure of 2.6 billion views for the axolotl hashtag on TikTok. That is the count reported in 2022, not a current platform total; the measurement method was not independently verified.

Did Minecraft or TikTok cause the rescue pressure?
The reporting makes a connection plausible, but does not prove causation. The Guardian noted the animals’ popularity on TikTok and Minecraft’s 2021 introduction of axolotls in the full game release. Seales was skeptical that Minecraft alone explained the rescue numbers and emphasized irresponsible breeding. OneKind, an animal-welfare advocacy organization, has also said that interest among children and young people can come from seeing axolotls in Minecraft; that is the organization’s account, not a measured estimate of the game’s effect.
Rescue operators also described accidental breeding: owners did not separate or desex animals, and large numbers of eggs and offspring then needed homes. SPCA science officer Alison Vaughan warned the situation could escalate quickly. The available reporting does not quantify how much online visibility, breeding, or inexperienced ownership contributed, and it does not establish a causal estimate for either platform.

Why is an axolotl not an easy trend pet?
Axolotls have specific aquatic-care needs. Dr Helen Beattie of Veterinarians for Animal Welfare told The Guardian, “They’re not easy pets … They’ve got really specific needs.” The Royal Veterinary College’s December 2024 care sheet describes several conditions that prospective keepers need to understand:
- Temperature: The sheet gives an optimum of 16–18°C and says the water should never exceed 24°C.
- Water quality: It describes an ideal pH of 7.4–7.6, warns that chlorine is harmful, and says dechlorinator is essential where chloramines are used.
- Water changes: It suggests changing 10–20% weekly, with adjustments based on filtration and water-quality testing.
- Flow and filtration: Excessive water flow and over-filtration can cause stress.
- Substrate: The sheet recommends fine aquarium sand rather than gravel, which can be swallowed and cause a fatal obstruction.
These are care-guide details, not a complete husbandry plan. Requirements depend on the animal, tank, local water and climate; consult an exotic-animal veterinarian and check that you can provide suitable long-term care before taking one on. A thermometer can help monitor temperature, but buying equipment does not by itself make an axolotl suitable for a household.

What to do if you can no longer care for an axolotl
Do not release a pet into the wild or breed it in hopes of finding homes. Contact an experienced local rescue or rehoming organization for advice, and be candid about the animal’s health and care history. The 2022 New Zealand reporting shows why responsible breeding and planning for rehoming matter, but it does not identify a current organization or service available everywhere.
