There is no established single cause of death for fennec foxes across all settings. In a 2023 review of zoo records, neoplasia (cancer and other abnormal tissue growth) and infectious disease were the leading reported causes among available postmortem reports. For wild fennecs, conservation sources describe localized risks such as road deaths and trapping, but do not rank causes of death or identify a leading natural predator.
What the evidence says about captive fennec foxes
A retrospective study reviewed Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) fennec fox records from the Bronx and Prospect Park Zoos covering 1980–2019. Of 83 animals held by WCS institutions during that period, records were available for 52 and postmortem reports for 48. Among those 48 reports, neoplasia was listed in 15 (31%) and infectious disease in 14 (29%) as causes of death or euthanasia. These figures describe the available reports in this specific zoo review—not all captive fennecs, and not wild foxes. Read the 2023 study record.

The study also noted neoplastic processes incidentally in seven additional animals, and hepatocellular carcinoma in nine. Trauma and dermatologic disease, particularly atopic dermatitis, were among common causes of illness. The authors reported that four animals were suspected to have died following a modified-live canine distemper vaccine. That historical observation concerns this zoo population and is not a basis for changing vaccination decisions; an experienced wildlife or exotic-animal veterinarian should advise on care.

The Canids Specialist Group does not identify major threats across the species’ entire range, but it describes localized human pressures. Expanding roads and settlements, transport routes, and extractive development can increase risk, including road deaths; the account notes fennecs may be unusually curious around vehicles. Trapping for exhibition or sale to tourists is identified as a principal local threat in parts of North Africa. Fennecs have also disappeared from some areas after permanent settlements were established. The impact of major oil-field development on local populations had not been assessed in the account. Read the Canids Specialist Group species account.

These are documented conservation pressures, not a measured ranking of deaths. The reviewed sources do not establish which natural predator, disease, or other cause kills the most wild fennecs. Zoo postmortem records cannot fill that gap because they describe managed animals and a different set of risks.
Does disease kill fennec foxes?
Yes, infectious disease was a leading reported cause of death or euthanasia in the WCS zoo review: 14 of 48 available postmortem reports (29%). That result shows disease can be fatal in captive fennecs, but it does not establish how often disease kills wild foxes or which infections are most important in wild populations.

If you are asking about a pet fennec
Captive pet welfare is a separate issue from wild mortality. WWF describes fennecs as undomesticated animals with demanding housing, diet, exercise, and veterinary needs, and advises prospective owners to locate a qualified exotic-mammal veterinarian and check local rules because ownership is restricted in some U.S. jurisdictions. Its guide is about care and ownership, not population-level causes of death: WWF’s fennec fox guide.
