Minnie was an American bulldog who had been nervous around men. After care from Best Friends Animal Society’s New York team, she met Nathan and Luke at a New York super adoption and greeted them with a wagging tail. They had expected to find a small dog for their Queens apartment, yet Minnie’s response made them want to learn more.

The couple did not make an instant commitment. They considered Minnie’s history, their apartment and their mostly male circle of friends, then returned the next day and first fostered her to see whether she would be happy at home. Best Friends’ account says she settled in, enjoyed walks and sought affection from both men. They renamed her Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln. It is a hopeful, specific adoption story—not a promise that every fearful dog will adjust in the same way or on the same timetable.

What happened when Minnie met Nathan and Luke

Best Friends Animal Society’s New York team had cared for Minnie after she came through Animal Control Centers of NYC. The organization’s June 20, 2016 story by Nicole Hamilton describes her as an American bulldog who had been nervous around men. With support from the team, she worked on that fear. By the time of the adoption event, the story says, Minnie was comfortable around almost anyone.

That progress mattered when she met Nathan and Luke at a New York super adoption. The couple had gone looking for a small dog suitable for their Queens apartment. Minnie was not the dog they had pictured, but she caught their attention and greeted them with a wagging tail. Nathan later recalled, “From the moment we saw her, we knew we had to know more about her.”

A friendly greeting at an event did not answer every practical question. Nathan and Luke wondered how Minnie would adjust to an apartment and to the couple’s mostly male circle of friends. They left the event to think about the decision rather than treating the first meeting as proof that everything would be easy.

When they returned the following day, they agreed to foster Minnie first. The story says they expected to become her adoptive family, but the foster period gave them a way to see whether she would actually be happy in their home. They eventually renamed her Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln.

Best Friends reports that Minnie settled in, enjoyed walks and sought affection from Nathan and Luke. Kristi Adams, an adoption specialist with the organization, highlighted the significance of the return visit: “Lots of people say they are going to come back with the best of intentions, but they don’t always return.” Nathan summed up the couple’s decision this way: “She was perfectly imperfect. And we knew she was ours.”

Why the first meeting was encouraging—but not the whole story

Minnie’s wagging tail at the super adoption is an observation from one meeting in one setting. It showed that she could approach Nathan and Luke comfortably at that moment. It did not establish how she would react in an apartment, during a walk, around visitors or when faced with an unfamiliar situation.

The account presents her earlier fear and her later greeting as parts of the same story. Minnie had been nervous around men, received care and worked on that fear, and then met two men who became her prospective adopters. Her behavior had changed enough for the organization to describe her as comfortable around almost anyone by the event. The article does not identify a single cause for that change, a formal behavioral protocol or a guaranteed timetable.

That distinction is important for anyone reading the story as guidance. A fearful dog can show confidence in one interaction and still need patience in a new home. Conversely, a quiet or hesitant first meeting does not by itself determine whether a match will work. The relevant question is whether the dog, adopters and support team can manage the transition together.

The decisions Nathan and Luke made before adoption

They checked the home they could actually offer

The couple had started with a clear picture: a small dog for their Queens apartment. Minnie made them reconsider that picture. Instead of assuming that affection at the event solved the practical issue, they asked whether an American bulldog would adjust to their living space. The story does not provide the apartment’s size, building rules or exercise arrangements, so those details should not be inferred.

For an adopter, the useful lesson is to compare the individual dog’s needs with the real home, not with an idealized plan. Questions can include where the dog will rest, how walks will fit into the day, what the building permits and who will help during the adjustment period. Those are planning questions, not guarantees about Minnie or any other dog.

They considered the people Minnie would meet

Minnie’s history made the couple think about their mostly male circle of friends. That concern was directly relevant because her earlier fear involved men. They were not only choosing a dog; they were considering how regular visitors and social routines might affect her.

Prospective adopters can make the same kind of list: household members, frequent visitors, children, other animals and anyone who may provide care. The goal is to identify situations that deserve a gradual introduction and a plan agreed on in advance. The Best Friends story does not say how Minnie responded to every visitor or describe a formal introduction schedule, so readers should not treat those details as established facts.

They paused instead of deciding under event pressure

Nathan and Luke left the super adoption to think and came back the next day. That pause gave them time to discuss their doubts and return with a deliberate choice. It also gave the adoption team a clear signal that their interest was serious.

A pause can be useful whenever the appealing part of an encounter competes with unanswered questions. Writing down concerns, checking housing rules and discussing responsibilities can prevent an emotional decision from becoming an avoidable mismatch.

They used fostering as a transition

The couple initially fostered Minnie to find out whether she would be happy in their home. In this account, fostering was not a way to keep options open indefinitely; they expected to adopt her. It was a structured opportunity to observe how the relationship worked beyond the adoption event.

Foster arrangements differ by organization. Anyone considering one should ask what the agreement covers, how long the evaluation period lasts, who pays for routine or emergency care, what support is available and how an adoption decision is made. None of those administrative terms is provided in Minnie’s story, so they must be confirmed with the organization handling a particular placement.

What “finding confidence” looks like in this account

The headline’s phrase is supported by a sequence of reported behaviors rather than a numerical test. Minnie was described as nervous around men when she entered care. After working on that fear, she was described as comfortable around almost anyone. At the event, she greeted Nathan and Luke with a wagging tail. In their home, she reportedly enjoyed walks and sought affection.

Those details show increasing comfort in the settings the article mentions: meeting the couple, moving into their home, going for walks and accepting affection. They do not prove that Minnie never felt fear again or that every situation became easy. Confidence is not presented as a permanent label; it is shown through the dog’s behavior as she encountered new experiences.

For readers caring for a timid dog, this is a more realistic way to read the story. Look for small, observable changes in the particular dog—such as choosing to approach, relaxing near familiar people or participating in ordinary routines—while recognizing that progress can vary by setting. The source supplies no behavioral measurements, timelines or guarantee that another dog will follow Minnie’s path.

A practical checklist for considering a timid dog

Minnie’s adoption offers a decision framework without turning her experience into a universal formula. Before agreeing to foster or adopt a fearful dog, an interested household can work through these questions with the shelter or rescue team:

  • History: What situations has the dog found difficult, and what behavior has the team actually observed?
  • Current behavior: How does the dog respond to each household member, common visitors, handling, noise and routine movement?
  • Home fit: Are the housing rules, space, schedule and walking options compatible with the dog’s needs?
  • Social plan: Which people and animals will the dog encounter regularly, and how will introductions be managed?
  • Support: Who can answer questions during the first days, and what happens if the dog struggles?
  • Foster terms: Is a trial placement available, and what are the responsibilities, costs and decision points?
  • Success measures: What specific signs would indicate that the dog is becoming comfortable, and what signs would prompt a change of plan?

These questions do not predict an outcome. They make the uncertainty visible so that the household and the organization can decide responsibly.

Minnie’s story in sequence

Stage What the Best Friends account reports What it does not establish
Entry into care Minnie, an American bulldog, came through Animal Control Centers of NYC and was cared for by Best Friends’ New York team. The article does not provide her age, medical history or the circumstances that led to animal control.
Behavioral work She had been nervous around men and worked on that fear; by the event she was comfortable around almost anyone. No formal training method, measurement or timeline is given.
First meeting At a New York super adoption, she greeted Nathan and Luke with a wagging tail. One successful meeting cannot predict every future interaction.
Decision period The couple considered apartment fit and their mostly male circle of friends, left to think and returned the next day. The story does not describe the apartment’s size or its specific rules.
Foster placement They first fostered Minnie to see whether she would be happy in their home, expecting to adopt her. The organization’s foster contract and trial length are not stated.
Home life She reportedly settled in, enjoyed walks and sought affection from Nathan and Luke. No long-term behavioral assessment or later follow-up is included.

What readers should—and should not—take from the outcome

The strongest lesson is about deliberate matching. Nathan and Luke noticed a connection, examined the possible difficulties, took time and used fostering to test the fit. The story also shows why an adoption team’s prior work matters: Minnie’s progress before the event helped make the meeting possible.

It would be a mistake to read the outcome as evidence that all timid dogs quickly become outgoing, that an apartment is automatically suitable for every larger dog or that a fearful dog needs only affection. The source is a human-interest account from the organization involved in Minnie’s care, not independent behavioral research. It does not provide statistics, a comparison group or a general adoption protocol.

What it does provide is a concrete example of one dog whose fear around men had improved, one couple willing to examine their circumstances and one foster-to-adopt path that led to a home. Minnie’s new name, Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln, marked the beginning of that home life, while the reported walks and affection showed how she was settling into it.

Source and attribution

This account is based on Nicole Hamilton’s “A timid dog finds confidence ─ and a home,” published by Best Friends Animal Society on June 20, 2016. The article reports Minnie’s history, her meeting with Nathan and Luke, their decision to foster first and her reported adjustment after placement. Because it is a single organization-reported story, readers should use it as an individual example rather than a guarantee about how another timid dog will respond.
