These ten mixes span toy-sized companions to dogs that can top 80 pounds, and from moderate exercise needs to demanding daily activity. Use the list to find candidates—not to predict exactly how a puppy will look or behave. Mixed-breed dogs can vary in adult size, coat, temperament, and care needs, so compare the individual dog, its parents when known, and your household routine.
How to choose among mixed-breed dogs
Start with the practical commitments you can make consistently: the space and strength to manage an adult dog, time for exercise and training, coat care, and how long the dog would be alone. Herding and working ancestry may mean more exercise and mental stimulation; long or curly coats can require frequent brushing and professional grooming.

Mix names are not guarantees. Doodle mixes have no shared breed standard, and their appearance, temperament, and care requirements can vary widely, according to PetMD’s overview of doodle dogs. The American Kennel Club also cautions that an ancestry test cannot predict which inherited traits will show up in a particular dog. Meet the dog and, when possible, ask about the actual parents’ size and health history.
Ten mixed-breed dogs to consider
1. Labradoodle: active, friendly companion
A Labrador Retriever–Poodle mix, the Labradoodle is described as athletic, intelligent, friendly, and playful. PetMD gives a broad standard-size range of about 50–70 pounds and 20–25 inches, with a reported lifespan of 12–15 years. Daily exercise, training, and regular grooming are part of its care. Coat and shedding vary. Although Labradoodles are sometimes called hypoallergenic, no dog is guaranteed allergen-free; if you have allergies, spend time with the individual dog before deciding. PetMD’s Labradoodle care guide discusses these needs.

These are broad figures reported in PetMD’s doodle overview, not standardized predictions for individual dogs. The Labradoodle and Goldendoodle care pages provide additional breed-specific context. A dog’s observed behavior, the size and health information for its parents, and a rescue’s or breeder’s records are more useful for evaluating that individual than the mix label alone.
Health: mixed ancestry is not a guarantee
Mixed-breed dogs are not categorically healthier than purebred dogs. The American Kennel Club’s summary of a 2013 study covering 27,254 cases and 24 hereditary disorders reports that 13 of the 24 disorders showed no significant difference in mean proportion between purebred and mixed-breed dogs after matching for age, sex, and body weight. The summary says one disorder was more frequent in mixed-breed dogs and ten were more prevalent in purebred dogs. These findings do not determine an individual dog’s health. Ask for the available health history and discuss appropriate screening with a veterinarian. Read the AKC’s summary.
Make the final choice around the individual dog
- Choose a likely adult size you can safely house, exercise, and manage.
- Be realistic about the time you can give to daily activity, training, and companionship.
- Budget time and money for coat maintenance, including professional grooming when needed.
- Meet the individual dog and ask about its observed behavior, background, parents’ size, and known health information.
- If allergies are a concern, spend time with that dog; a mix name or coat type cannot promise an allergy-free experience.
As AKC Chief Veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein puts it: “Most importantly, select a dog that you love and that you are willing to care for, in sickness and in health, for the rest of its life.”
