Start potty training as soon as your puppy comes home: take them to one chosen toilet spot often, supervise closely indoors, and reward them immediately when they go in the right place. Accidents are part of learning; calm consistency—not punishment—is what helps your puppy build the habit.
When should I start potty training my puppy?
Begin on the first day at home. Puppies learn through repeated chances to use the same place, close supervision, and an immediate reward for success. Choose a toilet spot you can reach reliably, and use it consistently.

Take your puppy to that spot on a leash and stay with them so you can tell whether they have gone. Praise them as soon as they finish; a small treat is optional. If they do not eliminate, keep them supervised and offer another opportunity soon rather than giving them free, unobserved access.
How often should I take my puppy outside?
Offer a trip whenever your puppy wakes, finishes a meal or drink, comes out of a crate or other confinement, or finishes playing. Young puppies may need many opportunities throughout the day, and individual needs vary. Watch for sniffing, circling, wandering off, whining, or moving toward the door; take your puppy promptly when you notice these signals.

Age-based holding-time formulas are only rules of thumb, not guarantees or permission to leave a puppy confined for a set number of hours. Very young puppies, toy breeds, and individual puppies may need more frequent breaks. If you will be away longer than your puppy can manage, arrange for someone to take them out or plan a safe relief area.
How do I build a routine that works?
- Go out after waking. Take your puppy to the chosen toilet spot as soon as they wake.
- Plan trips around daily activities. Offer another chance after eating or drinking, play, naps, and coming out of confinement.
- Stay present. Use a leash and watch for elimination and early signs that your puppy needs to go.
- Reward success immediately. Praise your puppy as soon as they finish in the right place; a small treat is an option.
- Keep supervising between trips. If your puppy does not go, watch them closely and try again soon.
- Increase freedom gradually. Let your puppy use more rooms as reliability develops, rather than opening the whole home at once.
Should I use a crate, puppy pads, or an indoor potty?
Outdoor toilet area
An outdoor spot is a straightforward choice when it is safe, practical, and you can take your puppy there often. A consistent place makes the target clearer for both of you.

Pads or an indoor potty
Pads or an indoor dog potty can work for households where outdoor access is difficult, including some apartment or mobility situations. Choose one location and stick with it. Accepting both indoor and outdoor toilet locations can make the target less straightforward, so keep the routine and chosen setup as consistent as possible.

Crate as a management tool
A crate can help limit unsupervised access when it is introduced as a comfortable place and sized so your puppy can stand, turn around, and lie down. An adjustable divider can reduce excess space as your puppy grows. A crate does not replace timely bathroom breaks; for longer absences, arrange a break or a safe relief area.

What should I do when my puppy has an accident?
If you catch your puppy starting to eliminate, interrupt calmly and take them to the chosen toilet area. If they finish there, reward them. Do not punish or shame them: it does not teach the right place to go and can make training more stressful.
Clean the soiled area thoroughly with a suitable pet stain cleaner, following its directions. An enzymatic cleaner can help remove lingering odor that may draw your puppy back to the same spot.

Why is my puppy still peeing in the house?
First check whether the routine is giving your puppy enough chances and whether they have been given more unsupervised freedom than they can handle. Return to closer supervision and more frequent trips if needed. A change in progress or repeated accidents can also have a health cause, so persistent accidents deserve a veterinary assessment.

He says a puppy who starts training early is usually able to be depended on most of the time to eliminate outside by six months, but this is not a guarantee for every puppy. If progress is not happening, Klein advises having the puppy checked by a veterinarian; a urinary tract infection or another health issue may contribute. If medical causes are ruled out and difficulties continue, consider help from a qualified trainer or behavior professional.

How should I choose a toilet setup for my household?
| Consideration | Outdoor toilet area | Indoor pads or potty |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Works when a safe, practical outdoor spot is readily reachable. | Can suit situations where outdoor access is difficult. |
| Schedule and mobility | Requires frequent trips outdoors, including around naps, meals, drinks, and play. | May be more practical for some households, but still needs consistent supervision and a regular routine. |
| Target consistency | Use the same outdoor location when possible. | Choose one indoor location and keep it consistent; accepting more than one location or surface can make the target less clear. |
| Absences | Plan for someone to provide a bathroom break when you are away too long. | Plan how the puppy can reach the designated relief area safely while you are away. |
Whichever setup you choose, match it to your puppy’s ability to wait and your household’s ability to maintain it. A crate may support supervision, but the schedule still needs to provide timely opportunities.
