Molly fish are not one species and the familiar names are not a formal list of 12 biological species. “Black,” “dalmatian,” “balloon,” and “lyretail,” for example, usually describe color, body shape, or fin design selected by breeders. Aquarium mollies may involve Poecilia sphenops, sailfin mollies identified as Poecilia latipinna, Poecilia velifera, and hybrids between them.
This guide uses 12 recognizable aquarium-trade varieties. The picture cues help you identify what is visible, while the taxonomy notes prevent a common mistake: assigning an exact species name from color alone.

What “type of molly” means
In aquarium shops, a “type” can mean a color pattern, a fin shape, a body form, or a species label. Those categories overlap. A black molly may descend from short-finned Poecilia sphenops; a sailfin may show traits associated with Poecilia latipinna; and many commercial fish are hybrids or selectively bred strains.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service notes that large-fin aquarium forms commonly result from crosses between short-finned P. sphenops and sailfin P. latipinna. That hybrid history makes trade labels useful for recognition but unreliable as proof of ancestry. The Florida Museum identifies the sailfin molly as P. latipinna, while care guidance from Petco covers P. latipinna, P. sphenops, and P. velifera.

Use the 12 headings below as visual categories. Captions such as “commonly sold as” are deliberate: the fish’s appearance can be identified more confidently than its exact species.
12 molly fish varieties and their picture clues
1. Black molly
Picture cue: The body is predominantly solid black, often including the fins. Some specimens have a slightly lighter belly or subtle sheen, but the overall impression is an almost uniform dark fish.
“Black molly” is a color form, not a guaranteed species. FishBase lists the black form in the aquarium context of Poecilia sphenops, yet store fish can include mixed ancestry. Do not use the black color alone to decide whether a fish is a short-finned molly or a hybrid with sailfin influence.
2. Dalmatian molly
Picture cue: Dark spots contrast with a pale, silver, or gray base, creating the dog-like dalmatian pattern. Spot size and density vary widely; some fish are mostly white with scattered flecks, while others are heavily peppered.
Dalmatian is a pattern name. Aquarium Co-Op describes dalmatian mollies among common livebearer forms, and trade sources also group them with marble and calico patterns. A spotted fish may have short, standard, or enlarged fins, so identify the fin shape separately from the pattern.
3. Sailfin molly
Picture cue: The defining feature is the enlarged dorsal fin. When raised, it looks like a small sail along the fish’s back; males usually display the most conspicuous fin.

The Florida Museum’s profile identifies the sailfin molly as Poecilia latipinna. In stores, however, “sailfin” can also be used for hybrids or fish with varying degrees of dorsal-fin development. Confirm the fin first, then treat the species label as provisional unless the seller provides reliable lineage information.

Picture cue: The body is noticeably short and rounded, with a deep profile that gives the fish a balloon-like outline. The same body form may appear in black, white, gold, or patterned strains.
Balloon describes body shape rather than a species. Because color and fin traits can be combined with the shortened body, two balloon mollies may look very different in photographs. For planning, use the fish’s expected adult size and swimming space requirements rather than assuming every color variant has identical needs.
5. Lyretail molly
Picture cue: The tail has extended upper and lower tips, producing a lyre-shaped outline. The central part of the caudal fin may be shorter than the two trailing points.
Lyretail is a fin-form label. Aquarium Co-Op lists lyretail among common molly forms, but the tail shape does not establish a single species. Look at the tail from the side and in a fully spread photograph; folded fins can make an ordinary tail appear pointed.
6. Gold dust molly
Picture cue: Gold or yellow coloration appears over part of the body, often fading into a darker region toward the rear. The boundary may be sharp or irregular, depending on the strain.

Gold dust is a trade color pattern documented in aquarium material. It can occur with different fin shapes, so record both features when identifying a fish: “gold-dust color with standard fins” is more informative than “gold dust” alone.
7. Platinum molly
Picture cue: The fish has an opaque, metallic-looking white or pale-silver body. Under aquarium lighting, the scales can appear almost mirror-like rather than simply matte white.
Platinum is another selected color form. Aquarium Co-Op names platinum mollies among common aquarium varieties, but the label does not guarantee a pure species or a particular adult size. Check the seller’s description for fin type and parentage if those details matter to your stocking plan.

Picture cue: The body is broadly white or cream, usually without the contrasting spots associated with dalmatian or calico fish. Fins may be translucent, white, or edged with another shade.
White mollies are recognized aquarium forms, but “white” is descriptive rather than taxonomic. A white fish can be short-finned, sailfin-influenced, lyretail, or balloon-bodied. Use the body and fin checks in addition to color when comparing photographs.
9. Marble molly
Picture cue: Irregular patches and swirls blend two or more tones across the body. The pattern is less sharply spotted than dalmatian and less distinctly multicolored than many calico fish.

Marble is a trade-pattern term discussed in aquarium-trade material alongside dalmatian and calico forms. Because pattern boundaries vary, compare several photos of the same fish rather than relying on one side view. Do not infer species from the marbling.

Picture cue: Three or more contrasting colors appear in a patchy pattern, commonly combining light, dark, orange, gold, or gray areas. The exact palette is not standardized.
Calico identifies a multicolored appearance. Aquarium Glaser’s trade discussion includes calico mollies, but a calico fish may also carry sailfin, lyretail, or other fin traits. Describe the pattern and fin separately when labeling a photograph.
11. Silver molly
Picture cue: The body is predominantly silver or gray, sometimes with a reflective sheen and darker fins or back. The fish may look plain beside high-contrast patterned varieties.
Silver is a descriptive seller label rather than a dependable species name. Verify the particular image and listing, because “silver” can overlap with platinum, white, or naturally gray fish under different lighting. A flash photograph can exaggerate metallic reflection.

12. Yucatan or giant sailfin molly
Picture cue: This is a large-looking sailfin form with a prominent dorsal fin and a more substantial overall profile than many ordinary store mollies.

Poecilia velifera is a named species in molly care guidance and is often associated with Yucatan or giant sailfin descriptions. That does not mean every fish sold as a sailfin is pure P. velifera. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s hybrid warning is especially important here: identify the visible sailfin trait, but do not claim a precise species without documented origin.

How to identify a molly from a photograph
- Start with the fin silhouette. Look for a raised, oversized dorsal fin (sailfin) or two extended tail tips (lyretail). If neither is present, the fish may have a standard short-fin shape.
- Check the body outline. A shortened, deep, rounded profile suggests balloon form. A longer, more streamlined outline points away from that trade label.
- Describe color separately. Solid black, metallic platinum, white, silver, gold dust, and spotted or multicolored patterns are appearance categories, not proof of species.
- Compare both sides when possible. A single angle can hide the dorsal fin, tail points, or pattern. Ask for a side view with fins spread if a seller’s image is unclear.
- Use “commonly sold as” when ancestry is uncertain. A caption such as “commonly sold as a dalmatian lyretail molly” accurately records visible traits without pretending that a trade name is a laboratory identification.
What the variety means for aquarium planning
Color usually changes recognition more than care. Adult size, body form, fin development, and the number of fish you plan to keep are the practical variables. Petco’s care guidance ranges from a 10-gallon aquarium for a couple of mollies to a much larger aquarium for a school; that is retailer guidance, not a universal minimum for every species, hybrid, or aquascape.
Size the aquarium for adults, not juveniles
Store mollies are often young. A small black or dalmatian fish can require substantially more room as it matures, and a large-fin or giant-sailfin form needs space for its extended fins. Count the fish you intend to keep, allow open swimming room, and choose the aquarium after considering adult size rather than the color on the sales label.
Do not mix labels as if they were species
You can have a black sailfin, a dalmatian lyretail, or a balloon molly with a patterned color form. These combinations are not contradictory because one word describes color and another describes fins or body shape. Record the combination instead of forcing the fish into a single category.
Plan feeding around molly biology
The Florida Museum states that sailfin mollies feed primarily on algae and other plant materials, while also consuming aquatic invertebrates, including mosquito larvae. In an aquarium, that makes plant matter and an algae- or spirulina-based fish-food category relevant alongside the rest of a balanced diet. The statement describes feeding ecology, not a requirement to buy a particular brand or product.
Choose fish by condition as well as appearance
- Look for clear eyes, intact fins, and steady swimming.
- Check that the fish is actually eating or responding normally at the shop.
- Inspect the whole group for obvious illness before selecting a specimen.
- Ask whether the seller knows the parent stock, especially for sailfin, giant-sailfin, and unusual body forms.
- Quarantine new arrivals according to your normal aquarium protocol before adding them to an established community.
Why two sources may call the same molly different names
Breeders select colors and fins independently, and wholesalers may shorten or embellish labels for sale. A fish described as “silver” by one seller may be called “platinum” by another; a spotted fish may be listed as “dalmatian” or “marble” depending on how dense the markings are. Lighting, age, sex, and whether the fins are fully spread also change the photograph.
For the most reliable identification, combine three observations in your notes: body shape, fin shape, and color pattern. Then treat the species as uncertain unless the source provides credible lineage or a species-level identification. That approach matches the institutional warning that hybrid mollies complicate identification while still giving you a useful name for selecting and caring for the fish.
The Bottom Line
The 12 names are best understood as recognizable aquarium-trade forms, not 12 separate species. Identify the fin and body shape first, use color and pattern as descriptive labels, and size the aquarium for the adult fish and the number you intend to keep.
