What is the clearest lake in Montana?
The most defensible answer is Ashley Lake, with an important qualification. LakeQuality reports a 33.1-foot Secchi-depth reading from sampling records attributed to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Quality Portal. A Secchi depth is a transparency observation: the deeper the disk remains visible, the clearer the water was under those conditions. Ashley’s 33.1-foot value is therefore a strong measured result, but it is not an all-time record certified against every Montana lake. Different lakes may be measured at different stations, on different dates, in different seasons and with different monitoring coverage.
LakeQuality also cautions that Ashley’s record lacks recent phosphorus and chlorophyll-a samples needed for its broader water-quality grading threshold. Its page does not rate swimming safety because the available evidence is insufficient. A clear-looking lake should never be treated as automatically safe for people or pets.

How water clarity is measured
The standard observation behind the Ashley figure is Secchi depth. A black-and-white Secchi disk is lowered into the water until it can no longer be seen, and the depth is recorded. A larger number means the disk stayed visible farther below the surface. The Flathead Lake Biological Station’s 2025 State of the Lake report summarizes the principle this way: “Deeper measurements (larger numbers) indicate clearer water.”
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s water-clarity indicator explains that clear water generally contains low concentrations of suspended particles and/or algae. Secchi disks are one simple visual method; turbidity meters and photosynthetically active radiation meters are other approaches. Each method describes a particular aspect of water conditions, so readings should not be merged as though they were interchangeable.
Why the number changes
Clarity is not fixed. The EPA notes: “Water clarity can vary naturally due to tides, storm events, wind patterns and changes in sunlight.” Wind can mix sediment or algae into the water column, while a storm can temporarily reduce visibility. Sun angle and cloud cover also affect what an observer can see. A reading taken after calm weather may differ substantially from one taken after runoff or strong wind.

For that reason, a lake’s clearest cove, a monitoring station in open water and a popular swimming beach may not produce the same result on the same day. The date, station, weather and method belong with every clarity value.

How Ashley compares with other monitored Montana lakes
Other published figures provide useful context, but they come from different purposes and datasets. LakeQuality’s monitored-lake ranking combines nutrient and algae measures; it is not a comprehensive contest that samples every Montana lake during one standardized period. What the Flathead Lake record adds
Flathead Lake is not established as Montana’s clearest lake by the available evidence, but it offers the state’s most useful long-term clarity context in the sources reviewed. The Biological Station reports that summer 2025 Secchi readings were close to the 11.2-meter long-term average calculated from July–September observations between 1978 and 2025. To name one lake definitively, Montana would need comparable observations across its lakes, collected with consistent methods and close sampling dates. The records available here do not establish that kind of statewide, same-period Secchi dataset. The evidence instead consists of:
- Ashley Lake’s reported 33.1-foot observation from a cited 2023 sample.
- Selected clarity figures in a monitored-lake ranking for Whitefish and Tally.
- Flathead Lake’s long-term scientific monitoring and seasonal average.

Visibility measures suspended particles and algae-related appearance; it does not by itself test bacteria, toxins, chemical contaminants or other health hazards. LakeQuality specifically says Ashley Lake’s overall water-quality grade and swimming safety are insufficiently rated because the supporting evidence is incomplete.

If you are planning to swim, paddle or let a dog enter the water, check current local health advisories, posted beach notices and park or county guidance. Do not rely on a deep-looking view from shore as a safety clearance. Avoid allowing pets to drink untreated lake water, and leave the water if officials report an advisory or if conditions visibly change after a storm.

Check the timing
Look for recent conditions rather than assuming a historical number describes your visit. Wind, storms, runoff and sunlight can all alter apparent clarity. A calm morning may look different from an afternoon after strong wind.
Check the exact location
Ask whether a published value came from open water, a deep central basin or a shoreline station. A single station does not represent every cove or beach. If a source identifies a date and station, keep those details with the number when comparing lakes.
Check advisories separately
Use current public-health or land-management notices for swimming decisions. Clarity data and safety advisories answer different questions, and neither should be substituted for the other.

Plan for pets
For a dog-friendly outing, confirm the site’s current access and leash rules before arrival. Bring fresh drinking water so your pet does not need to drink from the lake, and rinse the coat and paws with clean water after swimming. If the water develops an unusual odor, surface scum or a sudden color change, keep animals out and look for an official notice.

A personal reading is not an official water-quality assessment, but consistent notes can help you understand how conditions change.
- Choose a safe observation point. Use a stable dock or boat position with a clear view into the water. Keep people and pets away from an unprotected edge.
- Record the context first. Note the lake, exact location, date, time, weather, wind and whether the water was recently disturbed by boats or runoff.
- Lower the black-and-white disk. Lower it slowly until you can no longer see it. Record the depth shown on the marked line.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. If you monitor more than once, use the same location and a similar time of day where practical. Do not compare a calm-weather reading directly with one taken during a storm without noting the difference.
- Label the result accurately. Call it your Secchi observation, not a certified cleanliness or swimming-safety rating. Share the date and conditions if you publish or submit the measurement.
For a meaningful comparison, use the same disk, method and station each time. A homemade or poorly marked device can produce a useful personal observation but should not be presented as equivalent to a calibrated monitoring program.
