Moon died in May 2025, so River Guardians’ April 2024 request to report sightings is no longer current. The appeal followed reports of a rapidly appearing lump on the Swan River dolphin’s back. The lump later shrank, but its cause was never established. River Guardians’ preliminary postmortem account says Moon likely died from sepsis after giving birth, while leaving important details unresolved.
Why River Guardians asked people to look for Moon
In April 2024, Dolphin Watch volunteer Sue Harper noticed a large lump on Moon’s back. Harper had photographed Moon without it ten days earlier, according to River Guardians’ later account. The sudden change prompted concern that the lump might be growing.

River Guardians raised a ray-barb sting as one possible explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis. At the time, the cause was unknown. PerthNow reported the appeal on 28 April 2024, quoting River Guardians’ request: “If you see her, please take a video if you can, so we can see her behaviour and movements and note the time and location.” (PerthNow, 28 April 2024; River Guardians’ June 2024 update)
What happened to Moon’s back lump
By June 2024, the lump had significantly decreased in size. River Guardians said researcher Dr Delphine Chabanne had seen Moon and confirmed the reduction; Moon appeared healthy and was still foraging and feeding during the period of observation. That improvement did not identify what had caused the lump.

River Guardians’ June 2025 account said the lump, which measured 10 × 8 cm, first appeared in April 2024, disappeared for a few months, then reappeared in April 2025. Testing found a small pocket of pus in muscle, but River Guardians said: “The initial cause of the injury will remain unknown.” (River Guardians’ June 2024 update; River Guardians’ 4 June 2025 update)
Moon’s death and the preliminary findings
River Guardians reported that Moon was seen carrying her deceased newborn calf in the Canning River on 22 May 2025. The calf was found ashore two days later. Moon was found dead on Applecross foreshore three days after that, and DBCA staff retrieved both animals for necropsy.

In its 4 June 2025 update, River Guardians described the preliminary postmortem findings as indicating that Moon likely died from sepsis, possibly following a uterine tear. The account said it was unclear whether infection caused the tear or whether the tear became infected. Further laboratory testing might clarify the relationship; the reviewed update does not establish whether final results were published later.
The calf’s flukes were fused, which apparently made swimming impossible. River Guardians said the calf may have been stillborn or may have died shortly after birth. These findings do not establish a connection between the calf’s condition, Moon’s death and the unresolved original cause of the lump. (River Guardians’ 4 June 2025 update)

Is the sighting request still active?
No. The April 2024 appeal was a historical request for information about Moon while she was alive; River Guardians’ dolphin profile records her death in May 2025. The original advice for river users was to share video and sighting details with DBCA and keep vessels, including kayaks, clear of Moon to avoid adding stress. It should not be treated as a current request to look for her. (PerthNow, 28 April 2024; River Guardians’ dolphin profiles)
