1. He was discovered at a humane society
Animal talent scout Bob Martwick found Morris at the Humane Society in Hinsdale, Illinois, in 1968. The official account and a 2018 company release both identify that year, while the release specifies October. Morris then became 9Lives’ advertising spokesman. His route from shelter to national campaign is why adoption is more than a decorative part of his backstory: it is the origin story the brand has repeatedly used.

The event also predates many modern shelter-marketing campaigns. Morris was not introduced as a pedigree celebrity; his appeal came from the idea that an ordinary shelter cat could possess unusual presence. That distinction remains important when separating documented history from later advertising mythology.
2. An art director called him the “Clark Gable of Cats”
The 9Lives biography says an unnamed art director watching Morris audition described him as “the Clark Gable of Cats,” adding the phrase “you know, the ‘King of Hollywood.’” The quote is attributed by the brand to that art director, not to a named person, and it should not be treated as an independently recorded assessment.
It does, however, explain the performance style that made Morris memorable. His appeal was based on a confident, expressive cat persona rather than on dialogue or a complex fictional plot. The nickname gave advertisers a shorthand for a glamorous, self-possessed star while keeping the humor rooted in an actual cat’s attitude.

9Lives credits Morris with 58 commercials made between 1969 and 1978. The same total and period appear in The J.M. Smucker Company’s October 25, 2018 release, “Morris, the Original Celebricat, Celebrates His 50th Adopt-i-versary.” This is a company-reported count, not a modern independent audit of every surviving commercial.
The run was long enough to turn a product spokesman into a recurring character familiar to television viewers. It also helped establish Morris as a “celebricat,” a branded celebrity whose identity could persist beyond a single advertisement. The dates matter: the 58-commercial figure applies to the original Morris’s credited period, not automatically to every later cat who used the name.

4. His 1973 film credits included The Long Goodbye and Shamus
The official timeline lists Morris’s acting debut as The Long Goodbye and records Shamus, both in 1973. The 2018 company release independently confirms the Shamus appearance. These sources establish the titles and year, but they do not provide enough detail to describe a major role, screen time or a specific scene without embellishment.
Calling the films a “debut” reflects the wording of the official timeline. It does not mean Morris had a conventional human-style acting career. His film work was an extension of the same animal-talent and advertising visibility that made him famous on television.
5. The original Morris died in 1978, but his reported age is disputed
The original Morris died in 1978. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report said he was 19; Catster’s updated article gives 17. The official 9Lives biography reviewed for this article does not state an age at death, so neither number should be presented as settled fact.
The newspaper account is useful because it was published close to the event, but it is still a report rather than a complete veterinary record. The safest wording is that Morris died in 1978 and that published accounts disagree about whether he was 17 or 19. The discrepancy illustrates why the original cat must be distinguished from the mascot that continued after his death.
6. Later cats carried on the Morris role
Catster reports that three cats have played Morris since 1978. The official 9Lives timeline confirms continuity of the mascot but does not establish a complete number of individual cats. Therefore, “three” is best attributed to Catster rather than stated as an official total.

This succession changes how to read claims about Morris. A commercial, public appearance or campaign may involve a successor rather than the 1968 shelter cat. The name functions like a stage role: the physical animal changes, while the orange-cat character, visual identity and connection to 9Lives remain recognizable.

The official timeline records a Morris presidential campaign in 1988 and a return campaign in 2012. The company’s 2018 release also mentions both campaigns. These were publicity efforts, not legal candidacies or elections, and the sources do not establish that Morris appeared on any official ballot.
Mock campaigns gave the mascot a way to comment humorously on public life while reinforcing his celebrity status. They also show how the brand expanded Morris beyond a product endorsement: he could serve as a recognizable character in cultural events, not just appear beside a package of cat food.
8. His rescue story became an adoption program
9Lives says Morris promoted adoption, and The J.M. Smucker Company reported that its Morris’ Cat Rescue program had led to more than 1,000 cat adoptions by 2018. That tally is a company-reported result from the 2018 release, not an independently audited national statistic.
The program connected the mascot’s origin to a practical message. Morris was presented as evidence that a shelter cat could become a beloved companion, while the rescue initiative directed attention toward other cats needing homes. Readers looking to act on that message should contact a local shelter or humane society and ask about adoption requirements, fees, health records and post-adoption support; the Morris materials do not identify one universal adoption organization or policy.

9. Morris’s public life continued through later milestones
Morris II was already traveling widely by the late 1980s. In a December 31, 1989 Los Angeles Times article, Morris II was reported to visit 25 cities per year while supporting adoption and cat-health awareness campaigns. That figure describes the schedule reported at that time; it is not a current itinerary and should not be applied to the original Morris or to every successor.
The official timeline then records several later milestones: the Museum of Broadcast Communications recognized Morris as an Advertising Great in 2015; the brand marked his “50th Adopt-i-versary” at CatCon in 2018 and associated him with its Adoption Village; and Morris supported 9Lives’ new look in 2025. The brand’s current page says Morris continues advocating to help cats. That is a present-day brand statement, not proof of a specific 2026 campaign, donation total or event schedule.

9Lives introduced its cat food as wet food in 1959, according to the brand’s official history, and now presents both wet and dry food. Morris became the recognizable face of that product history a decade later. His advertising work supplied the celebrity, while his shelter origin supplied an adoption narrative that could outlast individual campaigns.
The distinction between cat and character can be summarized simply:
- Original animal: the shelter cat discovered in Hinsdale in 1968, credited with the 1969–1978 commercial run and reported to have died in 1978.
- Successor performers: later cats used to portray Morris after the original cat’s death; Catster reports three cats in total, while the official biography does not verify a complete count.

What is documented, and what remains qualified?
The strongest documented points are the 1968 shelter discovery, the 58 commercials credited to Morris from 1969 to 1978, the two 1973 film titles, the 1988 and 2012 mock campaigns, and the adoption-program milestone reported in 2018. Other details require careful wording: the age at death conflicts between sources, and the exact number of cats who have portrayed Morris is reported by Catster but not confirmed by the official timeline.
For readers interested in the food itself, Morris’s connection identifies 9Lives as the relevant brand, but a mascot biography is not a nutritional review. Product formulas, availability and suitability depend on the specific wet or dry food, the cat’s age and health, and veterinary advice.
