The Mountain Feist is a small, fast American hunting dog—not a miniature, low-energy companion. Bred for generations in the rural South, it was selected to locate and tree squirrels and to help control vermin. That history explains nearly everything about living with one: the breed is alert, athletic, independent-minded, and often intensely interested in anything that runs.
Mountain Feists are recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC), which places them in the Terrier Group. They can make engaging family dogs in the right home, but prospective owners should be prepared to provide secure outdoor management, daily activity, recall training, and careful supervision around small pets.

“Feist” has long been used for small hunting dogs in the United States. Historically, rural families developed these dogs from combinations of terriers and hunting hounds, selecting for practical performance rather than a highly uniform show-ring appearance.

The modern Mountain Feist represents generations of selection for small-game work, particularly squirrel hunting. A typical hunting dog searches for game, follows clues using sight, sound, and scent, then alerts its handler when the animal is in a tree. The UKC standard describes the breed as extremely alert and notes that it can be virtually silent while tracking.
That is different from a dog that merely enjoys chasing a ball. A Mountain Feist may make independent decisions in the field, cover ground quickly, and remain focused on a scent or moving animal even when its owner is calling. The American Treeing Feist Association, founded in 1985, is an independent organization that continues to promote Feists as squirrel-hunting dogs.
Is the Mountain Feist a recognized breed?
Yes—but the registry matters. The Mountain Feist has a written UKC standard and has been recognized by UKC since February 1, 2015. UKC currently recognizes Mountain Feist and Treeing Feist as separate breeds in its Cur and Feist program.
The Mountain Feist is not currently listed on the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service roster. It is therefore not an AKC-registrable breed. The term “Feist” is also sometimes used loosely for small hunting dogs or dogs of mixed ancestry, so a shelter label or seller’s description of “Feist mix” does not prove that a dog is a pedigree Mountain Feist.
If registration matters to you, ask for verifiable papers and parentage from the relevant registry. Do not assume that every small dog called a Feist belongs to the Mountain Feist breed.
Appearance and size
The Mountain Feist is compact but athletic. The body is slightly longer than tall, with enough muscle and agility for fast movement over uneven ground. It should look capable of working, not delicate or excessively heavy.
- Height: 12 to 18 inches at the withers.
- Weight: The UKC standard gives an ideal working range of 12 to 30 pounds, depending on the dog’s height.
- Head: Broad, with a moderate stop and strong muzzle.
- Eyes: Brown, from dark to amber.
- Nose: Black or self-colored.
- Coat: Short, dense, smooth, and approximately one inch or less.
- Tail: Natural or docked under the UKC standard.
- Color: Any color or combination of colors.
Dogs below 12 inches or above 18 inches are an eliminating fault in UKC conformation events. The standard also says size should be considered in relation to the dog’s working ability.

What about the ears?
The current UKC standard requires erect ears. Ear carriage may take time to stabilize, so dogs younger than one year should not be penalized for temporary variation. Permanently non-erect ears, however, are listed as a disqualification under the written standard.
Cropped ears are also disqualified. A dog with natural ears or a full natural tail is not penalized merely because it has not been cropped or docked; that point does not change the requirement for erect ears in a mature dog.
Mountain Feist temperament
A Mountain Feist is typically alert, lively, curious, and ready to investigate movement or scent. The UKC standard treats alertness, agility, hunting ability, and speed as central characteristics. It also disqualifies viciousness and extreme shyness.
Those words should not be confused with a guarantee that every individual dog will behave the same way. A Mountain Feist may be affectionate and entertaining at home while still having a strong chase instinct outdoors. Cats, rodents, rabbits, poultry, and other small animals can be difficult household companions for some individuals. The breed’s hunting purpose makes that a sensible management concern, not proof that every Mountain Feist is unsafe with small pets.

Children and other dogs also need an individual assessment. A well-socialized dog with suitable experiences may fit successfully into a family, but no breed description can promise that every Mountain Feist will automatically be patient with children, friendly with unfamiliar dogs, or compatible with cats.
Exercise and training needs
This is a poor choice for someone seeking a low-activity dog. The breed standard describes great bursts of speed, rapid movement through rough terrain, and sustained hunting work. A Mountain Feist needs more than a brief bathroom walk.
There is no official UKC rule requiring a particular number of minutes of exercise each day. The right amount depends on age, health, conditioning, and the dog’s individual drive. In practice, a suitable routine usually includes:
- daily physical activity appropriate to the dog’s age;
- sniffing, searching, and problem-solving games;
- short, frequent training sessions;
- practice with recall, wait, leave-it, and impulse control;
- secure fencing or a leash when wildlife may be present.
Do not treat intelligence or affection as evidence of a reliable off-leash recall. A dog bred to search independently may ignore a familiar voice when it is following a squirrel or scent. Build recall gradually with high-value rewards, use a long line in unfenced areas, and do not test the dog near roads or livestock.

The breed can suit an active owner who enjoys training, hiking, outdoor activities, or hunting. A rural home can make management easier, but open land is not automatically safe: wildlife, roads, livestock, and neighboring animals still create risks. A securely fenced area is more useful than simply having a large property.

In a suburban home, the main challenges may be barking or alerting, prey drive, and insufficient outlets for physical and mental activity. Provide structured activities rather than expecting the dog to exercise itself safely in the yard.
Introduce a Mountain Feist carefully to cats, poultry, and other small animals. Use barriers, a leash, and direct supervision. Never rely on an early peaceful introduction as proof that chasing behavior cannot develop later.
Grooming
The short, smooth coat is straightforward to maintain. A rubber grooming mitt or soft brush can remove loose hair and distribute skin oils, while occasional bathing is sufficient when the dog is dirty. Check nails, teeth, ears, and skin as part of a normal care routine.

Those claims should not be used to market the Mountain Feist. A short coat can still leave hair around the home.
Health and choosing a puppy
There is not a widely established, authoritative Mountain Feist health-testing protocol comparable to the recommendations available for many AKC parent-club breeds. Available Mountain Feist health guidance does not establish a definitive list of breed-wide diseases. That is a reason to investigate a breeder’s lines—not a reason to assume the breed has no inherited health problems.
Before placing a deposit, ask the breeder for:
- Veterinary records for the sire and dam.
- Documentation of orthopedic, eye, cardiac, or DNA testing that was actually performed.
- Information about health problems in the parents, siblings, and previous litters.
- A written contract explaining health guarantees, inherited disease coverage, and the breeder’s return policy.
Health testing can reduce risk but cannot guarantee a puppy’s future health. Be cautious of anyone who says Mountain Feists are universally healthy, never need testing, or have no inherited disease risk.

A reliable large-scale lifespan estimate specific to Mountain Feists has not been established. General canine lifespan studies group dogs by size, ancestry, or broad breed categories and do not provide a verified Mountain Feist figure. For that reason, a precise claim such as “13 to 18 years” should not be presented as an established breed statistic.
Good nutrition, preventive veterinary care, safe exercise, dental care, weight control, and responsible breeding all influence an individual dog’s longevity.

Who should get a Mountain Feist?
A Mountain Feist may be a good fit if you want a small dog with serious athletic ability and you are willing to train and manage a hunting breed. It is especially suited to an owner who values outdoor activity or wants a capable squirrel dog.
Think carefully before choosing one if you want a reliably calm lapdog, have several unsecured small pets, cannot provide daily activity, or need a dog that can routinely roam off leash. The breed’s compact size does not make its exercise and management needs small.
FAQ
Are Mountain Feists good family dogs?
Some are, particularly when well socialized and matched with an active household. However, individual temperament matters. Their hunting drive can complicate life with cats, rodents, poultry, and other small animals, and children should always be supervised with any dog.

Are Mountain Feists aggressive?
Aggression is not a defining requirement of the breed. The UKC standard requires an alert, capable working dog and disqualifies viciousness. Individual behavior depends on genetics, socialization, training, health, and management.
Can a Mountain Feist live with cats?
It is possible for an individual dog to live safely with cats, but it cannot be guaranteed. Because Mountain Feists were developed to pursue small game, introductions should be controlled and the animals should be separated whenever direct supervision is unavailable.
Do Mountain Feists shed?
They have a short, smooth coat that is easy to maintain, but the UKC standard does not claim that they are non-shedding or hypoallergenic. Owners should expect some normal shedding.
Are Mountain Feist and Treeing Feist the same breed?
No. UKC treats Mountain Feist and Treeing Feist as two separate recognized Feist breeds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs the Mountain Feist recognized by the AKC?
The Mountain Feist is not currently listed in the AKC Foundation Stock Service roster and is not an AKC-registrable breed. It is recognized by the United Kennel Club.
Do Mountain Feists have floppy ears?
The current UKC standard requires erect ears. Ear carriage may still be developing in dogs under one year, but permanently non-erect ears are listed as a disqualification under that standard.
The Bottom Line
The Mountain Feist is a small, athletic tree dog with a large working instinct. Its short coat and manageable size are appealing, but this is not a low-maintenance temperament: expect speed, curiosity, prey drive, and a need for secure containment and purposeful activity. Choose one for the individual dog—not for promises that every Feist is automatically healthy, child-friendly, cat-safe, or suitable for off-leash living.
