Mountain lions and domestic cats both leave scratch marks, and marking territory is a documented overlap. However, wildlife agencies describe the mountain lion behavior primarily as making visible territorial marks on trees, while veterinary and cat-care sources identify several domestic-cat functions, including communication, claw-sheath removal, stretching, and play. A house cat scratching a sofa is therefore not automatically doing the exact equivalent of a cougar clawing a tree.
What mountain-lion scratching is known to communicate
The clearest evidence concerns marking. Rocky Mountain National Park’s National Park Service page, last updated May 4, 2018, says mountain lions “mark their areas very thoroughly by creating mounds scented with urine and also scratching trees to leave visual marks.” In that description, clawing is part of a broader territorial-signaling system: scent deposits communicate chemically, while the scratches provide a conspicuous visual sign.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife makes the comparison more explicit: “Like house cats scratching furniture, cougars mark their territory boundaries by leaving claw marks on trees, stumps, and occasionally fence posts.” The agency’s field guidance describes adult cougar scratches as long, deep, parallel and nearly vertical, commonly about 4 to 8 feet above the ground. It contrasts those marks with the generally lower scratches associated with bobcats and domestic cats.

Those height and shape observations are useful when interpreting field signs, not a guaranteed identification test. A tree, stump or fence post may have an unusual surface, an animal may choose an atypical position, and marks can be weathered or altered. The important point is what the agency is documenting: a cougar uses conspicuous claw marks at territorial boundaries as a sign to other cougars.

Rocky Mountain National Park also notes that mountain lions are generally solitary and that their seasonal territories can shift with elk and deer migration. That ecological context helps explain why a visible territorial message can matter. It does not establish that every scratch has one single purpose, nor does it show that mountain lions use scratching for all the same maintenance or emotional reasons described for house cats.
Why domestic cats scratch
Domestic-cat scratching is normal, innate behavior. Veterinary and animal-welfare guidance treats it as a behavior to manage, not deliberate household destruction. Several functions can occur in the same episode or at different times.
Marking and signaling
Scratching can leave a visible mark that advertises a cat’s presence. Cornell’s Feline Health Center characterizes scratching largely as a marking behavior and reports that special glands in the paws deposit scent as the cat claws. The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) similarly states: “Scratching is an innate behavior of cats. Scratching serves to groom the front claws, as well as to leave visual and perhaps olfactory markers.”

Removing worn outer claw layers
Domestic cats periodically shed translucent, frayed outer layers, often called claw sheaths. Pulling the claws against a rough surface helps remove those layers and keeps the working claw exposed. ASPCA and the AAFP both include this grooming or claw-conditioning function in their guidance.
This is the main reason not to describe every furniture scratch as a territorial announcement. A cat may choose a convenient rough surface because it provides the resistance needed for claw care, even when no other cat is nearby and no boundary is being contested.
Stretching and exercising
ASPCA describes scratching during stretching and play. A cat may reach upward, extend the shoulders and back, and pull against the surface after sleeping or during an energetic bout. The AAFP says cats may scratch to stretch their muscles. A clinical review also lists exercising muscles and tendons among the possible functions.
These movements can look dramatic: the cat braces with its hind feet, extends the forelimbs and leans its body into the post. The posture can tell you more about the immediate purpose than the damage itself. A long full-body reach after rest is consistent with stretching; rapid alternating paw strikes during chasing or pouncing fit play.

Play and arousal
Some cats scratch when excited by a toy, a visitor, a chase or a change in the environment. In that context, scratching may release energy or form part of a play sequence while still producing a visual and scent mark. It is not necessary to assign one exclusive motive to every scratch.
Where the species overlap—and where they do not
Both species can produce a visible claw mark that carries information. That shared outcome supports a cautious comparison about marking, but it does not prove identical motivation or identical sensory processing. The available references are wildlife descriptions for mountain lions and veterinary or care guidance for domestic cats, not a controlled head-to-head experiment.
| Comparison point | Mountain lions | Domestic cats |
|---|---|---|
| Communication | National Park Service and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife describe scratches on trees and other objects as visible territorial marks, often alongside urine scent marks. | ASPCA, Cornell and the AAFP describe visual marking and possible scent signaling to other cats. |
| Claw care | The cited wildlife descriptions establish territorial marking but do not establish claw-sheath removal as the reason for tree scratches. | Removing worn outer claw sheaths and grooming the front claws are documented functions. |
| Stretching and exercise | The cited mountain-lion sources do not document stretching or play as explanations for the tree marks. | Stretching, exercising muscles and tendons, and play are described functions. |
| Typical documented surface | Trees, stumps and occasionally fence posts; adult marks are described as high, long, deep and nearly vertical in Washington field guidance. | Posts, cardboard, carpet, wood, sisal, rough fabric, upholstery and other household surfaces, depending on the individual cat’s preference. |
| Confidence of comparison | Evidence here supports a territorial-marking interpretation, not a complete catalogue of every reason a mountain lion might claw. | Multiple functions are supported, but a particular scratch still requires attention to context, posture, surface and location. |
Why a cougar’s tree mark is not simply a “wild version” of furniture scratching
The Washington agency’s wording invites a useful analogy, but analogies have limits. A house cat may scratch a sofa because it is stable, rough, conveniently located and tall enough for a stretch. A cougar’s mark on a tree is described in relation to a territory boundary and communication with other cougars. The two behaviors can share a marking function while differing in the surrounding social and ecological situation.
It is also unsafe to infer claw sharpening from the mountain-lion references alone. The wildlife sources supplied for this comparison specifically document visual territorial marks. They do not say that the cougar was removing worn claw sheaths, grooming its claws or exercising its tendons. Those are established domestic-cat explanations, not conclusions that can be transferred automatically to a wild cat.

Likewise, a domestic cat’s scratch should not be read as proof that it is claiming a territory in the same way a solitary cougar does. Indoor cats may mark, but they also scratch for grooming, stretching, play or a mixture of functions. The same piece of furniture can serve several purposes over the course of a day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret a house cat’s scratching
Observation is more reliable than assuming that every mark means the same thing. Look at four features together: the cat’s body position, the surface, the location and what happens immediately before and after the scratching.
- Body position: A full upright reach with the back and shoulders extended is consistent with stretching. Quick, vigorous pawing during a chase or toy session suggests play or excitement.
- Surface: Long fibers, rough fabric, sisal, wood and cardboard provide different resistance. A cat that repeatedly chooses one texture may be seeking a particular tactile response for claw care or marking.
- Orientation: Many cats prefer vertical posts, while others choose horizontal pads or slanted boards. Orientation is an individual preference, not a rule that applies to every cat.
- Location: Scratching near a doorway, sleeping area or frequently used passage may place a visible or scent mark where it is likely to be noticed. A post hidden in a remote room may be ignored even if its material is appealing.
- Timing: Scratching after waking, during greetings, after play or when another animal appears can reveal different immediate triggers.
No single clue proves a motive. The goal is to identify the pattern that lets you offer an acceptable outlet without punishing a normal behavior.

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
- Record the current preference. Note whether the cat scratches vertically, horizontally or at an angle; which materials it chooses; how high it reaches; and which room or object it targets.
- Choose a stable scratcher. Select a sturdy cat scratching post or pad that will not wobble. For a vertical scratcher, use a height that allows the cat to extend its body fully. For a horizontal scratcher, provide a surface that stays flat when pushed.
- Match the material. Cardboard, carpet, wood, sisal and rough fabric are among the surfaces ASPCA lists as possibilities. Start with the texture the cat already selects instead of buying an incompatible material and expecting immediate acceptance.
- Put it beside the target. Place the post directly next to the sofa arm, doorway trim or other favored site. Once the cat uses it reliably, move it gradually if a different location is needed.
- Make the new surface rewarding. Praise or reward the cat for using the scratcher. Play near it if play is a trigger, and position it near a sleeping area if the cat tends to stretch after waking.
- Protect the original object while the habit changes. Temporarily block access or cover the preferred furniture area, while keeping the acceptable scratcher immediately available. Avoid frightening or physically punishing the cat; that can create stress without teaching which surface is allowed.
- Adjust based on evidence. If the cat ignores the post, change one variable at a time—orientation, height, texture or location—so you can see which feature matters.
This advice applies to domestic cats. A household scratcher is not a management tool for a mountain lion or any other wild cougar.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The strongest shared conclusion is limited but useful: scratching can function as a visible mark in both mountain lions and domestic cats. The National Park Service and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife support that conclusion for cougars. ASPCA, Cornell and the AAFP support it for house cats while also documenting additional functions.
The sources do not provide a direct controlled comparison measuring motivation, scent deposition or claw condition in both species under the same conditions. A clinical review also notes uncertainty about how to interpret the exact location and scent component of domestic-cat scratching. It is therefore more accurate to say that the behaviors overlap in one documented purpose than to claim that the animals scratch for exactly the same reasons.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a field observer, a high, deep, nearly vertical scratch pattern on a tree can be a clue consistent with an adult cougar, subject to the Washington agency’s caution that field characteristics are not universal guarantees. For a cat owner, the practical question is different: identify the domestic cat’s preferred surface and posture, then provide a stable, suitably tall or appropriately oriented alternative.
