If your dog has claimed the entire sofa, you can reclaim space without scolding or physically moving them. First choose a household rule—no couch, couch only by invitation, or shared access—then make the dog’s alternative resting spot comfortable and teach them to settle there. Dogs may sprawl on the sofa because it is comfortable and keeps them close to the people they enjoy, not because they are trying to be disobedient. Dogs Trust explains why dogs use furniture.
Choose the couch rule your household can follow
There is no single couch rule every dog-owning household needs to adopt. The important thing is that everyone responds consistently; mixed signals can make the boundary confusing. PetMD’s guidance on keeping dogs off furniture also emphasizes consistency.
| Household rule | What to do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| No couch access | Teach the dog to settle on a nearby bed or mat, reward that behavior, and manage access to the sofa when you cannot supervise. | You want to keep the sofa available to people. |
| Invitation-only access | Use a consistent cue or a dedicated blanket to signal when the dog may come up. Teach the dog to settle on the blanket on the floor first; place it on the sofa only when access is allowed. | You enjoy some couch time with your dog but need a clear boundary at other times. |
| Shared access | Agree on practical boundaries, such as reserving a seat or side for people, and accept that the dog may use the sofa. | You are comfortable sharing the furniture and do not need a no-couch rule. |
Pick the option that suits your comfort and the dog’s needs. If you want the dog close by, a bed beside the sofa can preserve that connection without giving up the seat.
Teach your dog to settle on a nearby bed
Place a comfortable bed, blanket, or mat near the sofa or wherever your dog already likes to rest. Dogs may prefer different styles, including raised beds, bolsters, or orthopedic beds; choose based on your dog’s individual comfort and preferences rather than assuming one type is best. PetMD describes these bed options.

- Make the spot inviting. Spend time near the dog’s bed so it is still a place to relax close to the family.
- Reward voluntary interest. When your dog approaches or steps onto the bed, give a small treat or another reward they enjoy.
- Reward settling. Once the dog lies down, reward them for staying relaxed there for a short time. Gradually build up the time as they succeed.
- Add a cue. When your dog understands the action, say a consistent cue such as “bed” or “place” as they go to the mat. Practice in short sessions.
A bed cue means going to a designated spot and remaining there; the American Kennel Club’s furniture-training guidance gives “go to your bed, crate, mat, etc., and stay there” as an example. Rewarding the desired behavior helps the dog learn what to do instead: “Dogs will be more comfortable and learn quicker when offered a reward for the desired behaviour,” advises Dogs Trust.
When your dog is already on the couch
If your dog is relaxed, invite them off rather than grabbing, pushing, or scolding. You can call them with a familiar recall cue, or use a treat or toy to lure them down. Reward them once they are on the floor, then guide them to their bed or offer another enjoyable activity. This keeps the interaction calm while showing them where to go next.

If your dog has had couch access for a long time and training is proving difficult, a certified positive-reinforcement trainer can help you build a workable plan. PetMD sums up the approach this way: “Training and management are the most useful steps to keep dogs off the couch.”
Manage couch access when you cannot supervise
Training takes time, and a dog may return to a comfortable sofa when nobody is around to redirect them. During practice, prevent unsupervised access by closing the room or using an appropriate gate or pen. These tools support training; they do not replace teaching the dog where to rest.

A crate is an option only if your dog is comfortable in it, and it should not be used for prolonged confinement. American Humane Society’s guidance on dog dens describes a crate as a place for brief periods, not somewhere a dog is meant to live. If your dog is not crate-comfortable, use another suitable way to manage access.

Growling when approached
If your dog growls when someone comes near them on the sofa, do not pull, push, or punish them. Growling can be a sign of resource guarding. Avoid creating a confrontation and contact a qualified behavior consultant or applied animal behaviorist for guidance on behavior modification.

New trouble jumping up or down
An older dog, or any dog with a new change in mobility or behavior, may find jumping uncomfortable. Discuss the change with a veterinarian. If your dog is otherwise allowed on furniture, your vet can advise whether a small step or ramp might help; do not use one to pressure a dog to keep jumping onto the sofa.
Children sharing the sofa
Keep children and dogs supervised together, and teach children to leave a resting dog alone and let the dog move away. A dog should be able to leave the sofa or its bed without being followed or crowded.
